Mr l.uok enlsaoli told Major Hoggs that Ida lnv ertynient k)vuIiI not take ml mi.w of the tMiwl blockade to ralssi lltg railroad rates to prohibitive figure. Mr. I.tickenhach mild that he believed they added nre.it welgli to their afgUIIMIlL He felt confident that the Ooveniment would reduce rates en iltat the Panama service oould be con Untied. other at the sleellna. At the meeting were tienrral Manager lrake of the Panama ILillroad, Fred erick V. Lincoln of the Merchants As sociation and Traffic Manager Hamilton of the laickeiihach Steamship Company, who had collected the figures on which the company based Its argument. Mr. Hamilton showed that the average cost per ton to the railroad for handling freight had been ll.tl In 1111, $1.11 In lilt, 11.41 In 1913 and $1 14 In 1911. On thtoher I the railroad Imposed a rate of $3 a ton. which Included steve dore charges of SO cents a ton. After this rate had been In effect a few days It was unnounced that on November I class rates would go Into effect, which. It has been estimated, would make the rates from 12 50 to $15 a ton. This rate change caused the l.uckenbach coiupany to announce that If such rates were col lected the company would have to sus pend Its Panama service. Mr. l.uckenbach seemed to feel after the meeting that Major Hogg s report to Secretary of War Harrison would result favorably for the steamship company. The report will be made In a few days It Is exacted that Mr. Harrison will make his decision quickly because of the uncertain shipping conditions. liipecla Heller Asked For. SWIFT TURN FOR BETTER I I The report nf the Pnited Slates Steel I Corporation for the quarter ended Sep- temher 30. 1915. which was made public vesterda. showed total net earnings of 93N.TI0.tt44). This was after deducting all expenses Incldetft to operations. In cluding those for ordinary repairs, main tenance of plants and Interest on the bonds of the subsidiary companies. This compares with $27,950,055 for the quarter ended June 30. 1915. and with $1'2. 278,00!! for the quarter ended September 30, 1914. The directors did not declare n divi dend on the common stock, although it would have been possible for them to hnve done so out of the surplus for the quarter of $18,037,211, after th payment of the regular preferred divi dend of 1 , per cent The payment of the regular quarterly dividend of 1 ' per cent, on the common stock, which was abandoned some time ago. would have necessitated an expenditure of M.Mt.TIa, In conservative circles the quarterly report of the Steel Corporation is looked upon U very satisfactory. In stock! market circles, howev er, there was some i disappointment, as It had lieen estimated I that the company would show net earn ings of any where between $40,000,000 and $50,000,000 The report shows the tremendous strides that t he steel In-1 dustry is making. There was little disappointment ex pressed over the failure of the directors to declare a dividend on the common stock, as it w-as generally believed that the officers wished to make up some of the loss in the profit and loss surplus, tarougli the payment of dividends when' not earned, before renewing disburse ments on the common. One of the most satisfactory things, about the Steel statement was the ad- I vance In earnings. For the month of July the earnings, before the pavment of interest on the Isynds of the subsid lry companies, were llt.ttt.ttt. In AtuniM the oarnlntl w ere Ht.l4T.tll, j while in September they had risen to 14,ltt.Wt. This mafle a total of $41. 050.433. as compared w ith ltO.IM.4tf I for the previous quarter and as compared with lt4.Ttt.0tl in the September, 1914,: quarter. I The earnings for the quarter Just ended were the largest leported since, tile quarter endeil June 30. 1913. when, t43.7Jl.H33 was shown The total net earnings for that quarter were $41,219. 81$. The largest earnings ever made t bj the corporation In three months were reported for the quarter ended June 10 . ltOT, when they amounted to $45,503,705.
