T . .u RECITAL OF SONGS BY MARCELLA CRAFT American Soprano T)isclncs Dramatic Temperament and Poetic Fancy. SINGING NOT THE BKST Marcella Craft, soprano, gave a song recital yesterday afternoon In Aeolian Hall. Mlsa Craft la one of the numeroug American singers who Have been com pelled to make their careers In Kurope because In this country there Is a want of opera houses In which beginners may nnn openings with prospects of rising to the lop. She has eung In Munich. Dresden and Berlin, und In the tlrst two cit es Is an established favorite. Hep Halome la regarded ns authoritative und she has given song recitals In Oerinany with much honor. All of those things which this Inter , American has done In the land or Teutonic Ide-alu can be done with mote glory there than here. Germany Is a musical, but not a vocal country, tf a ulnger can treat the text with elocution ary skill, placing accent, emphasis and lonaf- color In such manners as to dis close tho purpose of the poem, and can L .t0 tnl" ot Interpretation suf ficiently good tone to Indicate the mel ody. If not actually to sing It. and can add some touches of temperament, suc cess la absolutely certain. No amount of had tone In the medium, shrieking upper notes, singing out of tuna or breaking phrases can discourage an audlencn In Germany. Of the tlner qualities of vocal rt hearers oter there appear to be wholly Ignorant. Tltc Sun's music reviewer has many times observed with wonder the enthusiasm or German audiences while songs were he Ing Interpreted with almost nothing like real singing and has been scarified from Berlin to Vienna for telling about It. But It Is good to tell the truth. Miss Craft Is not so poor ova1 re source, as many of the lleder sinners nf the- Fatherland : but she is far from teaching the standard of singing reVo nlted in this provincial city. She has a voice which was probably at one time a very good one and wlilih still contain some beautiful tones, t-speclally In the middle register. But the noisy Teutonic opera house has done much to destroy the quality of the voice, which Is hard and worn and which refuses to be true to the pitch at all times. Furthermore It was apparent that Miss Craft had never been a mletresi of vocal technic. for sh. frequently produced upper tonisl In the familiar vicious manner and ' forced all parts of her voice through the use of muscular Interferences. Her piano singing was often extremely good. In tnis she often sang "on the breath, and It was plain that she knew -the value of the head quality In such work. I But the velvnt was brushed from her ' voice long ago and her singing wanted Just the mellowness, and soft resonance which is essentia! to the creation of a sensuous beauty. Dramatic temperament, intelligence and a consummate knowledge of style are her greatet ussvts. Fine Insight and poetic Imagination weie shown lr. eery number. She was too ncrvoua to sing her first songs well, hut never theless her delivery of Scarlatti's "So Florlndn e fldele" was a model of tate and communicative method. She sang Brahms's "Feldeinsamkelt" with poverty of tone, but great riches of feeling. Her mastery of the composer's Intent was complete. There were other lyrics In which similar excellence1 was shown. Miss Crttt departed from cuitom by placing her roiip of songi by American composers (hint. There were eight songs, most of thfiu hopelessly dull, conventional ami even pointless, iv haps after all It is bolter to put the. Americans at the end, where Miss I'rat; placed I'lluncr. Strauss, Zaudoual, .M.u;. cagul and Muntone, a noblo company of allle.1. AN ALL WAGNER PROGRAMME. Philharmonic's l.aat Kvrnlua Inn- rrrt if thr Heaann.
