The urgent demand for special high
grades of i-ttel caused by tho war has
given an impetus to the construction
of electrical furnaces. Nearly all the
builders In this country making four
or live different typcii have been rushed
with orders and still havo qulto a number
of contracts under negotiation. Tho
American tlrldge Comtwtiy, which Is
constructing the llcroult type furnace,
has taken orders for Uilrty-tlxv furnaces
since last September. Most of the or
ders have been for small sizes, running
from one to six tons each In capacity,
but some orders havo beep placed for
larger units, running up to twenty tons
capacity. 11 Is understood that the prices
paid ranged from J20.000 to 110,000 each,
depending upon tho type and capacity
of the furnace. When It Is understood
that tlio cost of Installation Is often
covered In a month or two, under present
conditions. It Is only surprising that
more furnaces have not been installed.

The Pennsylvania Hailroad lilies east of
Pittsburg has g.ven a contract for nine
small bridges, requiring ,"i00 tona of

nage. The Seaboard Air Line has also
given a bridge order for 300 tons of
