GENERAL ELECTRIC LEASES WAR PLANT Acquires Hemingtoii Com pany's Property, With Op tion to Purchase I Joseph I'. Hay closed yesterday one ot the largest Iniluptrlul real entato con tracts that luive been consummated In many years, when tho Oenernl Electric , Company took over under lease, with the : option to purchase, the enormous Rem ! lnKton Arms U. M. C. Company plant at Urldueport, Conn. Tho transaction In volved about J7.000.000. The plant Is probably the larucst so-called "war plant'' In tho country. It wns built dur ing 1913 and 1916 by Junes Stewart & Co. At the outbuak ot tho war the Item Inpton Arms U. M. . C. Company had ' enormous war orders to execute, bo they I required additional factory space. No time was lost In ipiiklnR their plans, and I they decided to carry out their big Im provements In Bridgeport, Conn., their borne for many years. Hrldueport had the advantago of good railroad connec tions, water front facilities and skilled labor. Adjoining tho company's prop erty was 11 larno unimproved tract. This was acquired nrd on Januaiy 18, 1915, a contract was entered Into for tho con struction of the plant. During the fol lowing eight months the entire plant of 1,500,000 square feet was completed, to gether with the power houe. At tho apex of activity In tho Reming ton plant there were 3,600 builders at work. At tint tlmo 100 cars of mate rial a day wero brought upon the Job. It Is hard to picture a plant or. mis size except by comparison. It is Dig ger thnn tho Kqultablo llulldlns by more than 200,000 square feet and 50 per cent brser than tho Woolworth Building. The plant Is located on a traot of about forty acres. The actual space covered by buildings Is about 900,000 square feet, or moro than twenty acres. Tho floor urea contained within the building Is 1.555,257 square feet, or over thlrty-sK ceres. In general scheme the buildings may be divided Into several groups: First, tho group of thirteen main ftvo story bulldinga and tho dry kiln ; second, the five one story buildings; third, tho power Jiouse, and fourth, the employ ment office and guard's quarters build ings and Ptorago buildings. The first two groups are the manufacturing units end the second two are adjuncts of them. Indicate Induntrlnl Activity. Joseph P. Day said yesterday. "The ecurlng of this property by the General Kloctrie Company is a good Indication of tho Industrial activity of the whole country- Although the company oper iitcs many of tho largest manufacturing plants In this country, they did not have Hiimctent room to execute their orders and needed about 1,000,000 to l,500,00u square feet In order to turn out their products. Instead of buying land and building a plant along the lines of Uielr own exacting requirements, they started an Investigation of tho so-called 'war plant,' and the Remington Arms plant at Bridgeport was the most Ideal situa tion they wero ablo to find, and Is almost the typo and layout ot tho building they would construct for their own needs." An offlcla. of the General Electric Company stated : "Our company needed n. considerable amount of mawufacturlruT spaco for executing orders cn hand, and after looking over the whole New Eng land field for available factory space It was found that tha Rjmlngton, plant offored facilities which could bo used for tho purpose. Bridgeport Is one of New England's leading manufacturing cltlea and Its cloee proximity to New York makes It an excellent location ior tha manufacture of electrical prod ucts, particularly ot tho smaller types and sizes." C. L. Relerson, president of the Rem ington Arms Company, stated: "The plant that has Just been taken over by iho General Electric Company was one ot our surplus properties and was sold 1 to the Bridgeport Liquidation Corpora tlon. It was erected during tho war for tho execution of war or ders. It has served its purpose well nndtI am- glad to see It occupied by the General Electrls Company. When laying out the plant we had In mind Its use after the war, and what wo looked forward to is now coming true. The leasing of this property has no rffert whatsoever on our U. M. C. Com pany plant at Bridgeport, which Is al ways In full operation on our general line of work." BELGIAN LINE GETS PLER 13. Hacks on Stnfcn Island to lie Re tained Also. JoFpph A. N'ash.
