The market blew hot and cold In rapid succession, but, out aid's of n rather sharp setback at the closing, duo to a sudden Jump of the call money rato to 10 per cent., It dIJ not appear ns though the bear party had been any more successful In Us attempt to get prlceB lower- than on Thursday. Thero was an excellent nbscrptlon of stocks on a scale down all day, as was the ease on the preceding day, and, not withstanding the money flurry, which was due to nothing more important than tho usual cstra demand for fundH on Friday to carry stoc'.tfl over the week end, tho senoral run of active fpoculn tlv shares closed about where they left off on Thursday, a circumstance which was' rather significant in view of the amount of professional hammering which they had to stand during the dealings. A few special stocks actually made probers, but they were exceptions to llio rule. There was nothing special In tho news developments concerning the financial situation. Whatever momentum tho market had on the up side was due. therefore, entirely to'tho enthusiasm tr. speculative circles earlier In the week. The trading fraternity tried very hard to exploit tho rallioad situation to force prices down, but Undine that this had no influence on tho market, turned their attention to tho possibility of higher money at tho clcse. The best that they could do, even In tho face of rising money, however, waa to keep tho mar ket from going up. A few special stocks made progress in face of the selling of the standard leaders, but they moved ahead mostly on individual considera tions, which had nothing to do with tho ireneral run of stocks. ThU resulted In undoing most of the progress that had been made early In "the day, but that was abou us far ns tho weakness went At the low prices, fresh buying came Into the mar ket end stocks steadied, closing nwmi unchanged. j As was th raro on tho preceding 1 day, thti equipment and Independent ' rteel shares wi-re the principal features, j 1 1 ,v Tf..T.1..'t,, r inere was iu,u,fi u.. day. and Hafkell &" Barkt-r. another equipment Issue, came in for special prominence In the last hour. In the Rteel group the movement was lead by Itepubllc. which is being bought in antici pation of an Important announcement, which will bf ehher on the annual meet ing, two weeks off. concerning either a stock dividend or relative to a merger with another forgo steel company. In so far ns tho rest of the market was concerned there was nothing of special lmportanco In It. Steel common and the other standard stocks followed a very uneven courso roost of the day, showing a good deal of strength at times and extreme weakness at other stages of tho session. In tho end they got no whero In particular. As has been the case all week, the railroad nharcs did nothing whatever in spite of all the bullish tall: that has been heard In speculative clrcleB concerning the possi bility of a fresh upward movement. Thero was no life In the coppers either. Tho principal reason for tho 10 per cent money in the afternoon was on account of tho extra demand for tunas to carry stocks over the week end. As there is no money market on Saturday tho borrowing demand Is always heavy on Friday?, but nine times out of ten a flurry on that day has no significant whatover as regards the actual money ettiiotlnn. As was pointed out, bankers are convinced that th money situation will continue fairly easy, and as evl rtencft of this, noint to the dumber of new Issues which are being bought out by Investment bankers. Tho foreign exchange market was strong. Sterling reminded from the low of yesterday on the publication that the Bank of Kngland Is getting reauy to release further large amounts of gold to be shipped to this country. 12' 12!' 126 1127! 1S 20 9 10 .. 26 27 .. 24, 25 SI 1 81' 6 S8V- 33'.-' .. 70 72 7 122!123 101 4i 10! 4: 1000'Ualtlmore & Ohio 100'Baltlmorc & Ohio pf... 9r0i!arrett Co EOOlBarnsdall Cotp A 33500; Bethlehem Motors 3j 49600, Bethlehem Steel 11 SOO'Brooklyn Itnpid Transit 0 ii . ..I 46 40 46 04 ;t 46 129131 128I12S; 48 7 48 29; 32 93 101 16 16 itl 1 Til...... n n. ...... .. .At i 1 uuu uurna UroR iu'S :12S 200'Butterick Co ,20 20 9Lt' 10 8 I ft j 35; 37 5a 54 84 ! 86 1 107 ' 107' 33 1 35 S4H 1S 26 45 HOOjButte Copper & Zinc 800'Uuttc & Superior Copper. 1500, Caddo Cent O & It 400,Callfornla Tack Co 400 California Petrol lOO'Callfornfa Petrol pf 1 SOO.Canadlan Pacific 2500jCentral Leather ex div..
