For the best part of yesterday's sesr
islon tho stock market was Inclined to
rally., The news developments were
generally better rind there was 'a feeling
In rnecnlattve circles tliat If the Steel
statement was aH pood as It wan cx-
rected to hi, anil assumed out to bo the
caso, It mlsht produce a temporary re
vulsion of tlu twrlsh fcc'.lng that has
prevailed In financial quarters for the
last two week?. The market accordingly
did better from the outset. The steel
1 stocks got up close to their previous
htelm for the current rally, and the
tmovemont wan 'in a fair way toward
spreading to the rest of tho list when
money rates were jacked up again. This
naturally Interrupted the rally, and at
the same time' brought out a good deal
of selling, hut stocks held fairly well at
that, considering the fact that call
money went as high as 10 per cent, at
the close. The setback averaged about a
point or two In tho leading stocks, but
as this wan from the high of the day
only a few, stacks showed net losses at
the close. ,
The morfcy flurry, like the one several
days ago, was a temporary affair, due to
.withdrawals from member bank." by the
Federal lleservo Bank. These withdraw,
nls created a shortajo pf money for the
moment, which Is' expected to b rem
edied to-day. The imisorvatlve Interests
in the Street were far more Intcrejted
in the Steel statement than they were
over the-money flurry. There had been
all. kinds , of r Kueiises as to what the
rafnlngq would be. and the statement
mad 'public after tho closing was !very
Iblt.rt9 good as.expected. ll showed.net
aarnlnjfs of approximately $42,000,000. as
compared with slightly more than JiS,
000,000 in the last quarter of last year,
notwithstanding the various difficulties
which wero encountered In tho steel In
dustry during the flrrt three months of
the current year. The expected extra
dividend In ftock or Liberty bonds did
not materialize, but no on? had serious'y
looked for thi at yesterday's meetln?.
There 1 a fcellpR In wood quarters that
Buch action will - taken eventually,' but
not until later m In the year.
Heading .waa naturally tho market
feature nt tho outset. The shavp tlo
on the pru'codlng day following the de
cision had led many people to believe
that there might be a wide opening. This
did not .materialize, however. The open
ing was moderate, and the stock rn
countered profit taking, which, together
wl(th JicAvy, tirofesslonal selling, -forced It
down to about S" at the closing. With
tho fireworks 'In Reading over, specula
tive attention turned ack to the Indus,
trial stocks, llaldwln was run up very
sharply and there was a further spurt
In American Woolen, following the pub
lication of Its annual report. Steel com
mn got above 99 for tho first time since
tho setback last week and. despite' the
reaction ut the closing, finished tho ses
sion without a net loss, which Is better
than could be e aid of most of the oher
steel shares. The Interest' tn the :nilor
stocks died out fter a furfher rise in
General Motor and theto was profit
taking at tho close.
', Tho rle In money was a surprise to
j many bankers. Inasmuch as not all of
therrt had been Informed of the vlth
; drawals by the Reserve liank. With re
! spect to money to-day, most bankers
.believed thut rules would be e.vder, It
was expected after the closing that the
! renewal rate would l.e 7 per cent., the
(.Hiirnaa!) on yesterday, and that that rate.
rvnuiu Trevpu, mnstrucn as mere win
be no further withdrawals this week.
Further gold wa withdrawn from the
Sub-Trenury yesterday tor rhipment to
South America, but thl. will bo offset
i on the arrival of more Rrltlsh gold. It
Is understood that a new movement of
about J50.000.000 s about to begin, al-

tnined yesterdny. At any rate thi-io was
a sharp ndvance In sterling alter fur
ther weakness-and '(n quarters usually
well informed on41ils subject It was
stated that the strength In exchange un
doubtedly reflected tho earty arrival of
more gold.

with only a very few In excess of the
latter flgure, As a matter of fact, 'tho
net earnings for thn quarter aggregated
more than 12,004,000, One point undo
yesterday was that, on the basis ofthe
earnings for tho last preceding, quarter,.
the corporation actually earntrt fi.zc a
share, or nt the annual rate of $21.04.
It was pointed out that on February 1
the corporation put Into effect a wago
Increase of 10 per, cent., amounting to
more than J3, 300,000 a month, but It did
not ralfe-tho prices of Ita pioduct to off
set that addltlPna.1 charge. In other,
wordx, irthe corporation had not volun
tarily Increased tho .wages o' Ita wor'.ert
on February 1, Itseariiifixs statement for

, A I'onl In Kcndlnir?
In connection with tho weakness In
Bending in tho last hour. In which tho
ctoc't declined to 87. after Felling up
to 94. a new high since 1918, It was
learned yesterday that a new pool has
been formed In the stock for the purpose
of making It the speculative leader In
the move supposed to he brewing In the
rails. According to that Information,
weakness In thn Block was created to
help tho pool acquire Its stock. Inas
much as the decision by tho Supremo
Court that the coal properties must be
segregated, there was little opportunity
for tho speculative fraternity to acquire
sufficient stock to make a further ad
vance attractive. When tho pioflt tak
ing set In,' it was very notlceahlo that
the stock was well taken on a scale down
and, furthermore, that buying came1 from
some of the best l.outei In the Street.
The rumor was circulated, supposedly by
the pool, In further. of an attempt to
acquire stock, that the 7ecls!on m'.jht
not turn out as favorable as expected
! for common holders because of various
I underlying Ibfues and on account nf the
i 'aige ownership of Beading securities by
the New York Central and the Baltimore
and Ohio. That argument is ridiculed
in many quarters and, although no one
ran say with certainty Just what benefits
will accrue by the segregation, It appears
to be certain that they will be of pe
culiar value to Beading common holders.
In one quarter It was figured that com
mon holders will benefit to the extent of
considerably more than $100 a share.

Weakliest In aiotor Shnre,
. One reason given for the weaknei-s it.
tin- motor mocks yesterday was the
rcpoit that some b,m.;s which are e.ir
rying groat amounts of automobile
sharM in their loftn accounts, are coni
n.encing to look aliance at thosa accounts,-
and Jn some few Instances to
insist that koido nf them he withdraw u
and more favored Mocks sustituted. At
any rate, tho motor stocks weru under
rather heavy HqulJatlon pressure yes
terday afternoon, and with them declined
most accessory stocks, which have fol
lowed tho automobile-securities up tho
grade. , .

Gold Shipments. -
Beport's that tho movement' of "gold
from England to New York In anticipa
tion of payment of the Anglo-Frencn
loan maturity would be resumed with a
large arrival of gold within tho next
few daj'H wero current yeftorefny. It
was not possible to obtain huthentlc
information to the effect that any ship
ment is tm'tha'hlgh seav-But dtwaw
admitted Tif banking clreK's-that-000.000
o additional gold would be
brought to New York, spread over sev
eral weeks time, as shipping space Is
available. There Is keen expectation in
banking circles that the actual arrival
of gold will be announced soon. There
was withdrawn yesterday from the Sub-
Treasury for shipment to the Argentine
Jti.OOO.OOl) in gold ngainsi millennium
withdrawals at 512,000.000, The reason
for thi smaller shipment was nserlbeo
to the sudden shift In exchange rate.-,
which took all the profits out of ship
ments In that direction. Thus far, for
the account of the Anglo-French loan,
approximately JSO.OOO.OOO ln gold bus
arrived. The sharp rise In sterling yes
terday afternoon foroshadows. it is be
lieved, other shipments.
Money nt 10 Ver Ceut.
The call money rate ran up suddenly
yesterday afternoon to 10 percent, from
7 per cent., wheie It apparently has been
pegged for severat days. The tightening
of the money market yesterday was
ascribed to the withdrawal of $17,
000,000 of United States Government
deposits by the Federal Hescrvo Bank, at
which It was stated positively that thero
would be no further withdrawals this
week. An easier tendency In tho call
money market, however. Is hardly to
bo expected until after the May 1 In
terest and dividend distribution has been
provided for, although It is possible that
preparations on that account have been
completed. Time money was dull and
unchanged.

Good Old Sir Per Cents.
An Investment demand for bonds that

been growing prcceptlbly stronger for
several weeks ana has broadened wiinin
tho last few days by the parsing of the

rather prominent customers at the bond
counters for several days, and It Is this
demand that has accentuated the move
