Ex. closed 78,537,963 1911. 921,204 42,766,982 MOTOR ISSUES IMPROVE Baldwin Lends Market Up ward Money Easier Ex-. change Featureless, . 1 1 J . . r I The recovery In stocks continued throughout the early part of jester- day's session and the standard storks gained nn average of about a point or two all the way around. Tills sort of a recovery always follou-n a ii.niin. such as has been experienced for the laot 'fortnight, 40 that after the most urgent part of the covering had been ifcm pleted It was quite natural that stocks (should sax off on profit taking, particu larly In view of the fact that senti ment was still very bearish. The ma jority of commission house trailers still I clung to the view that thn rally was nothing more than a recoil In a bear market and sold stocks aecoiillngly on all bulges. This selling tended to give the market 11 much weaker appearance than It actually had, but It was notice able that stocks wero well taken on nil setbacks and that, furthermore, the general market tendency was distinctly upward whenever the pressuro suffi ciently relaxed to permit stocks to fol low their own course While the professional traders were very bearish, there was really a much better feeling In conservative quarters In the Street. For one thing It was realized In these circles that the talk about the possibility of a commercial panic had been entirely overdono. While it Is admitted that the process of deflation has probably started In some commodities, a good many people In the financial community believe that the stock market has nlrendy discounted about as much as can happen In this connection during the current year. Stock market prices, while they h.ive had a sharp reaction from the "top, of course, are still substantially above the pre-war level but no comparison can be made of this on account of the tre mendous amount of money which the1 average industrial concern has put back Into Its property In th meantime. The Important thing, however, is that there lias been a substantial reduction In the loan account. It Is estimated In re liable quarters that the loans are now substantially below the pre-war level, which. If true, means that Hie stock market has already done about as much as can be expected "toward the curtail ment of credit. Therefore It is figured that any further curtailment of loans outside of Wall Street should eventually work to the advantage of the securities market. The recovery made very rapid pros- ross again during the first hour or so. ( Steel common got up almost a point uum .iiMiiu;iy s closing, uui tne moxi . hpcctocnlnr feature was Baldwin, In I which there was a further running In of the short Interest. The motor stocks did better under the lendership of Chwd t Icr. whose directors meet lo-day to take action on the stock dividend. ConslcVr ' lug the list as a whole, the specialties jwere most active. There was a further display of strength In Iteplogle, and j there was also a very sharp bulge in Bethlehem and Lackawanna in connec tion with the merger talk about the two companies. The rails were taken up under the leadership of Reading, but the JWPXth did not last very long,,'As a matter or fact, it looked In some quar ters as If the strength of the rails was being used to sell the active Industrials. In the last hour there was considerable profit taking, nnd most Issues lost the best part of their early gains. The money market was, asler at the outset. Call mrmey renewed at 8 pet com., as cosiU9rl with 9 per cent, the I day before, and the inte for new money 1 dropped back o K per efnt. Liter oil In the diy. In hanking elicits It Is ex pqcted that money will ease ntlll further later on In 'the week. The banks nre j pursuing a very conservative policy on account or the expectation or a baiiK can, and as soon as this Is out of the way there Is a feeling that they will be more liberal as respects Stock Exchange loans. The foreign exchange market was dull and steady, without any special feature one way or the other. Some small lots of gold were withdrawn from the Sub Treasury for shipment to South America, but nothing was heard of tho gold that Is supposed to be on Its way to this country from Great Britain. An Irregular market, which ' puzzled Wall Street ifontlderahly and left it about where It started, was tho net result of yeitcrday's trading. The market started off with a rush, 'ndependent steel stocks In the lead, to bo Joined by the rail Is sues. A turn In the money rate to 6 per ( rent, in tho late decline caused ns a whole, however, tho averages cx hlblted last night an advance on the day's trading. Most tapa watchers ex pressed the opinion that the market la merely marking time, awaiting tho next news development of Importance and Is In a' position to go either way rather rapidly. The most Important factors In tho Immediate situation are the decline In the call money rate, plans for aid for the railroads, the low point to which brokers' loans have fallen and resump tion of the gold movement within a short time. Against them are to be considered the' extreme thinness of tho market,- that tho public generally nro not Ir.toreited In stocks, the wide decline In Liberty bonds and proposed legislation for n heavy tnx on stock sales. Endeav ors to get the public Into rail stocks have persisted until they amount almost to organized propaganda. Most of It has failed because every time the rails have moved the next day or ro has found their prices back at the old levels, with the purchaser piobably facing u loss. In most cases they have been unable to hold rallies. Yesterdaj's market for u time developed Into an all rail market, with all of them moving forward buoyantly and In many Instances registering mwl erate gains for the day, but closing off considerably from the htehs. Back of the rail move were the announcements that the Interstate Commerce Commis sion had taken up the valuation problem and that roads of the Eastern district had applied for a 30 per cent. Increase, the Southern roads would ask for a 30 per cent. Increase and the. Western roads petition for a trifle less. Arguments presented In behalf of the rail stocks at this time appear to be waterproof, but, for some reafon or other, probably because of the very uncertainty of their situation, the public docs not become Interested In them as a group. Money Definitely Knsler. A deluge iof money, working back to the banks after liquidating May 1 divi dend and Interest payments, was of feied tin call yesterday afternoon, with the result that the call rate, which has ruled at an average of 7 per cent, since April 12, declined to the 6 per cent rate, at which figure It closed.' It was reported that considerable of the money offered late yesterday afternoon was without takers, as tho majority of In quiries had been filled earlier in the day and at a higher rate. Money has been high, with a single exception, since April 12. On that day It loaned at 6 per cent. Again on April 20 It loaned at that rate. In the meanwhile It has traversed a wide range, touching a max imum of 13 per cent. Banker's are of the opinion that the rato for the time being will be a moderate one. 4 SMj 1 00 23 Wu lullcdKlnndm SU 1121 " 03i 1 05 I U.M8 Z 113 2 031S 1 03 12 OSIg (Ha 1922 rrta; 7 V3 12....1..0334 Ks 1929 rets 4 OII4 2 01 2 01 14 3 007g ii 1937 I. ' One factor In the decline In the money rate yesterday was the absence of heavy demand for money with which to carry stocks. Brokers' loans, in consequMce of the drastia shake-out which has taken place, are at a very low ebb and art au thority dclareil yesterday that they arc at the lowest point In two years. A house which has been taking consider ably more than $1,000,000 from loan brokers has cut Its Indebtedness to $500,000 and probably will cut It still further when Its present loans are called. That Is probably a safe criterion of what la happening all through the Street. Brokerage offices are literally bare of stocks. va 1 1 1 1 5 1 1 1 6 4 2 6 5 1 Liberty Bond Decline.
