PUTS COAL FAMINE UP TO WHITE HOUSE Minnesota Fuel Chief Testis ties Before Senate Committee. Pressure brought to bear on the White House by the miners has pre vented the Interstate Commerce Com mission from issuing an order that would remedy most quickly and most directly the country's coal shortage an order that would make tho direct assignments of coal cars for exclusive use by specific mines compujsory. This was the gist of one phase of the testi mony given yesterday by G. F. McGcc, Minnesota's Fuel Administrator, beforo the Special Senate Committee on Recon struction and Production In the En gineering Societies Building. The hear in; was one of the scries being con ducted by Senator William M. Calder, chairman of tho committee. Sir. McGee testified that while he was In Washington there was brought to hU attention a rumor that the White House hail been notified a strike would follow such an assignment of coal cars. He said John L. Lewis, International president of the United Mine Workers, was mentioned In connection with the rumored threat "You can see the reason for the min ers' objection." he continued. "If there are three mines In a group and the cars are assigned to only one It will make the men In the other mines dis satisfied." There was an air of surprise shown by those at the hearing when the testi mony of William H. Groverman, secre tary ol the Northwestern Coal and Dock Operators' Association, revealed him to be the author of order No. 10, which gives priority to the Northwest. The order was Issued yesterday by the Inter state Commerce Commission. Mr. Groverman testified that coal Is being, shipped intp the Northwest at the rate of 20,000,000 tons annually, but of that amount 6.000.000 tons arc being shipped Into Canada for future shipment abroad. CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE. Sustained strength In the railway shares, on which the issues of that group advanced I to 2.j points before the end of the noon period, was the ouistandlne feature of yesterday's trading on the Consolidated Stock Exchance. The re fleeted accumulation of those properties was based on forecasts of the certainty of approval of such a freight rate ad vance as would brins permanent Im provement to the land transportation Held.
