Sncial to Tim Hi and New Yosa Hhiiih. NswroaT. R. I., Aug. 10. Out of a dozen or mora brilliantly played matches, any one of which would give an ordinary tournament distinction, the victory of William M. Johnston, national champion, over Nathaniel V. Mies of ftoston, stood out as the most thrilling' on the Casino courts to-day. Tho con test saw tha Callfornlan a bit unntoady nt the start, which was not surprising considering tho fact that ho had stepped off a transatlantic steamship only a day or so before but It also saw him como through with his characteristic fighting rally In time to turn Impending defeat Into a well deserved triumph. Working up gradually to hi best speed and con trol, Johnston appeared to find himself In the lat division of a three-set match and before the match was over flaHhed some of tha wizardry of stroke that car ried him to tho top a year ago. Johnston was one of three of tho American Pavls cup players to make their appearance on the Newport courts In the annual Invitation tournament, the Other two being R. Norrls Williams 2-d and Charleu S. tlarland. The fourth of disposing of Hugh Kolleher of New fork nls than ho showed to-day, but Wash burn not only stands higher than iar land on the ranking list, but has been playing superb tennis ever since the turf court season began. There are not a few here who think the Seabrlght winner has more than an even chance of winning tho Newport trophy deeplto the presence of Johnston, Williams, Davis, Roberts et al. Washburn nt His Rest. Washburn, playing skilfully and with exceptional control, broke through ser vice Just once In each set, but as he won all his own scrvlco games, one break was sufficient to give him a straight set victory. The Held In singles narrowed down to eight survivors In the third round. Four of them, Hilly Johnston, Willis B. Davis, Roland K. Roberta and Clar ence J. UrlfTln, arc Callfornlans, and the other four nre G. Colkct C'atier of Phila delphia. It. Norrls Williams 2d of Hos ton and .S. Howard Voshell and Wat son W. Washburn of New York. First the opening game was lwstponed and then the entire programme was washed Into the Harlem Hlver. The Philadelphia!!, anxious to get away from all tennis for a while. In order to catch 'up with the rest of the field the Davis cup players, a day late, took the courts as early as 10 o'clock this morning. Neither Johnston, Williams nor Uarland had a particularly strong opponent In the opening round, but nouo of them made any attempt to win quickly or decisively. It was the first time they had stroked a ball In nearly a fortnight, and they bad not got rid of their sea legs, so they con lentod themselves with tuning up for the more Important matches In the second round, wlifch were to come an hour or so Inter. Then he came along with an Irresistible rush and won six of the next seven games for the set and match. Nlles kept going at top speed and was very steady, and the champion had to pass him cleanly to win his points. The first break came In the twelfth game, when Johnston on his own service made a succession of errors. That sin gle lapse was enough to give the Bos tonian the set at 7 5. Johnston flashed some brilliant strokes early In the sec ond set. driving at sharp angles and forcing Nlles out of position with deep hots Into the corners. He broke through Nlles's service In the fifth game and for the first time In the match had a lead of 3 2. His advantage was short lived, however, for he dropped the next three games in a row, two of the.ni hard fought deuce games In which the rallies were long and heated. That left the score 6 3 In Nlles's favor and the Int ter's own service coming. Johnston's Uphill Fight. Tt was a trying situation for the Call fornlan, for It was up to him to break through the Bostonlan's service or lose the match, and he had succeeded only oncei In nine games In breaking through service up to that stage. Hut ho faced the task plucklly, and after an uphill effort, during which he was twice within two strokes of defeat, won the game. It was sparkling tennis that accomplished It and most of It was fought out from deep court, for Johnston had deep re spect for Nlles's passing shots. Nlles had thrown all his strength Into tho effort to win In straight sets, and he was beginning to tire from the fast pace he had set. Johnston, on the other hand, was getting stronger and surer with every game, and the tables were turned quickly. The well nigh perfect control that had the Callfornlan worried In the llrst set began to desert Nlles until he had very little of It left. His strokes also lost power and snap, and Johnston had easy sailing the rest of the way, taking five of the last six games In the second set and stx out of seven games In the third. The Bcore was 6 7, 8 6, 11, On An outside court and almost en tirely overlooked by the crowd because it was played whllo the Johnston-Nlles match was going on. Charles 9. If Kearn can tako(an American referee to Lon don It Is not unlikely he will make the trip. Therefore, If dempsey Doxes Carpentler In England It will be advisable for th world's champion to confine his blows to the Jaw.
