( heavy ahort covering; by Wall Street and
: uptown Interest In an effort to lighten

The trade could find but little to account

showed nearly three Inches of rain at
Memphis, besides considerable elsewhere,
snd detailed weather bulletins were in
line with the map.
At the outset prices wpre IS to 48
points higher In a firm nnd moderately
active market. Cnmmlnsslon houses
were buyers after the call, but selling
by the South nnd local Interests carried
the market back to about a la-el with
the previous closing, from where the ad
vance continued. Covorlng was active
st times, with offerings readily absorbed,
bear showing a much lees aggressive
attitude yinn In previous sessions. Sen
timent was undoubtedly Influenced by
the Improved tone In the local security
market.
Liverpool was a little better than due
at the opening; and at midday In that
market, English cables reporting good
American demand. Spot business there
was quiet, sales amounting to 4,000
bkles. A few Wall Street opcratora be
lieved they saw some signs of a little
fresh buylnK power on the Idea that the
market might turn for a time. I wus

Long Term Railroad Bonds
When the European Wax broke out in 1914 high grade long tirrre railroad
bonds were selling to yield about A. then followed the flood of ratroean
liquidation and heavy borrowing by our own Government, with the reaulting
steady decline in railroad bonds to conform to the increasingly higher kurreat
rates paid on new security issues. Today high grade long time railroad iMoes
can be purchased to yield a return higher than has been obtainable in any previous
year for more than a generation. The enactment of the Transportation Act of
1980 followed by the increase in rates granted by the Interstate Commerce Com
mission has greatly clarified and strengthened the railroad situation. We recom
mend to investors the purchase at this time of long time railroad bonds.
