With only a few hours of stormy weather reported, the Atluntlr Ocean uurltig the last week has been Ideal for travel. But the travel unfortunately, from the viewpoint pi the steamship companies has been nearly all In one direction. Vessels bound for points abroad have left with their cabins less than half filled, and the occupants for the most part have been natives of c euntrles toward which the vessels wer j heading, or Americans going abroad purely on business. Trie demand for ac ccmmctlutlnns eastward has grown as light as the demand for freight bot toms. The profitable American tourist is do ing all his travelling homeward, and consequently tho "vc.Mbound stcamshlpi have all they can do to handle the traffic. Supplementing the tourist traffio Is a heavy demand through the countries of Soutli Europe, along the Mediter ranean for steerage room. A definite and swelling tide of Immigration from Italy has been especially notable. Of the thirty-eight vessels whose posi tions are indicated on the chart, six teen are speeding westward with their heavy loads of human freight. The twenty-two lightly burdened will soon he turned about on the more profitable course. The steamships bound east to answer the demands for passage toward America Includes such large ones as the Mauri ¬ tania (115), of the Cunard Line, for I , Key to Chart oj Steamships Crossing the Atlantic POSITIONS SHOWN AS AT NOON TO-DAY.
