' Alice,' said Mary Liston to hersisur, 'IhnTue mo;s
delightful news lo tell you. Dr. Ponroae has been to
ace ma, and says that a trip to the Springs will' oner
more good than all his medicines. He recommended
the W kite Sulphur, but Saratoga is* to be the fashion
able resort tins summer, and 1 want your assi* anee
in persuading pa to take the northern tour, as 1 behe\e
that one watering place will do as well as another .or
ma, for you know she is only nervous.
'Indeed, my dear sister,' said Alice, I cannot do
this, fwr if Dr. Penrose think* that the White Sulphur
will be more beneficial to nia s health, we should
surely consult this, rather than our own gratification.
? Nonsense!? a fig for Dr. Penrose! exclaimed
Mary; that is just ifke you, Alice; you seem deter
mined to cross my wishes in every thing. But my
heart is fixed on going to Saratoga, and I am deter
mined to carry the point, in spite of nil opposition.
Mary Liston was the beauty and the lavorite, and
her easily-governed parents seldom denied her re
quests. As soon as one of her plans had succeeded,
she brought forward another, which was, to take
their new equipage with them, that they might pas."
among strangers for persons of wealth and conse
quence. Mr. Liston, although a foolishly-indulgent
lather, was a plain old man, and instead ?I studiously
concealing his humble origin, made it a frequent sub
ject of boasting, that he owed his fortune to his own
ex?rtions, and thai he had risen from the poor orphan
apprentice of a watch-maker and jeweler, to the high
fetation he then held among merchants and bankers.
With the strictest economy, and the closest manage
ment in business, he united the most lavish expendi
ture upon his family; and he gratified Mary hv con
senting to |.'ii chase a carriage in New ^ ork, tor their
use wTiile nt Saratoga, ol which she should make
choice. This amendment was as agreeable to her as
the original scheme. In gaining this point, she lounil
an able ally in her mother, who was soon won over
by her daughter's powerful argument, that a display
of wealth was the surest means of securing a splendid
alliance. Having put her dearest wishes in a f?ir train
for lh< ir fulfilment, her next ?te;> was to school her
old father info the requisite gentilit; of manner.
' Mind, pa,' she said, ' you must never speak, of the
time when you were a watch maker, for people ol
fashion will look on us with contempt, it you do, and
you will ruin our prospects.'
'If there is any danger of injuring my daughters, in j
any one's estimation, by talking about it, 1 will not, it
I can help it; but I cannot understand why a man
should try to hide that which ought to be a source of
pride to hiin; anil I own it will be difficult for me lo
hold my tongue, when I si'c some whipper-snapper
dandy of fortune, who has'never earned a dollar in his
life, turning up his nose at honest and industrious
men, the producers ol their own wealth, because he
has been living in idleness on the hoards that his la
ther or grandfather left him.'
' But, pa, it is not genteel to acknowledge you have
been a mechanic, lor you know they are consideied
among the drege of society.'
' The 'dregs of society,' indeed ! Show me a fash
ionable family in our city, whose father or grand fat her
has not handled a tool, of some kind or another .
Why, child, no one thought less of old r*B. 1* raiit.hn,
because l:e was a printer ; or ol R?g? r Sherman, on
account of his being a shoemaker. 1 hose were g o
riouaold timns, when men were more respected for
their character than their calling. But the world is
s'r jngely alter jd, I confess and I suppose honest
John List.n must go with the tide.'
Mary Liston and her mother were characteristic
specimens of a class that is, unfortunately, a very nu
merous one in m ?M of our commercial cities? those
whose newly acqrired wealth is ostentatiously dis
played, as a means of elevating ihem into ? good so
ciety.' The most cherished wish of Mrs. Liston s
heart, was to see her daughters take a high stand in
the fashionable world, and her first step was to place
them at n school, where the rank of the pupils was
more carefully inquired into than the capability of their
instructors. She charged them tj cultivate the ac
quaintance of those w ho would be of greatest advan
tiiaje to them ill future. Alice followed th?i hlUr of
her moth r's instructions; for their friends were
cliosen among the intelligvnt and the virtuous, with
out any roiuru i?> their wealth or fashion. uut j ??ar\
was quickly initiated into their s/>ri7? for. with the
skill of a courtier, she soon ingratiated herself into i the
favor of those whose parents belonged to the highest
circles of socit ty. But when the important period of
h'-r ' coining out1 had arrived, she met with many jlts
ainwintiut nts. A few who still felt something ol their
school friendship toward her, occasionally returned
her visits; but she was often fated lo meet the cut
<} reel,' or the distant bow of unwilling recognition,
from those whose acquaintance she was most desirous
of retain. ti". The mother and the daughter were not
easily repelled; ami with an energy and perseverance
worthy u better cause, they continued to repeat their
advances, in despite of repuls.on, until they at l ist
gain d quiet possession of theout works of that citadi I
tliey had so long l>ecn besieging. Though Mrs Lis
ton endeavored to shake of! all her old friends, whose
presence was a continual memento of her former ob
scurity, yet some of them possessed a pertinacity
equal toner own; and il was quite amusing to seethe
variety of characters who sometimes happened to meet
in her drawing rnoni as morning visit rs. T he an
noying fact that Mrs. C ha I met Mrs. B- ? ,
wa- frequently a source of as much vexation to them,
as it was a snbject of ridicule to those who had so
lately admitted them into their society.
When the Listons arrived st New * ork, Mary was
delighted with every thing she saw. 1 Im dashing
equ pages ? the crowds of st y hah women and foreign
looking coxcombs lhal thronged the fashionable pro
in-multM? the display of wealth in theUfty mansions,
with their richly furnished drawing-rooms- so com
pletely inscinated her, that she was anxious to prolong
tswr stay far beyond the time fixed oil lor theif de
parture to Saratoga. But with the retiring Alice the
bustle and gaiety of the city made her often ?igh for
the rural quiet, and the green fields of Arlington, her
father's summer residence. Herrefined taste and m- j
tollectual pursuits were so nppoaite to the enjoyments
und pleasures of her fashionable moth.r and sister,
t'lat they thought her a strange being, and feared that
she would never be a cr, lit to their family

Upon the same day on which the Ceurtneys made
their appearance at Saratoga, an -invalid mother and
daughter came as visiters to the Springs, far the ru
cstablishmcnt of their health. They were very plainly
attired, and had no gentlemen with them, as escorts.
And w!ien the usual inquiry was made among the
groups of fashionable idlers, Mary and her friend re
i marked ' that, from the appearance they made, they
j of course could be nobody.' Both the young lady and
j her mother formed a perfect contrast to Emily Court
i ney and Mary Listen, the two representatives of their
i respective families. The graceful ease and simplicity
! of their manners, so different from tbe hauteur ami
I affected gentility of the w?Hild-be fashionable, the
( quiet courtesy with which they answered the inquiries
of the most humble ill that mixed assemblage, show
ed to those who were capable of judging, that they
were persons ol the highest refinement, and the best
society. Hut with the ' nonr uu riche,' th?*ir unpre
tending and almost unfashionable style of dress, and
the absence of every tlimg like a display of wealth, or
of salf-iuiportance, was a sufficient evidence of their
want of const quence.
The interesting daughter, feiring that her mother
was faint from the fatigue of travelling, advanced to
ward Mary, o request the loan of the richly-jeweled
vinaigrette , which she was rather ostentatiously dis
playing. She of course could not refuse it, but it was
tendered with as much rudeness as could be made
consistent with her wish to act the fine ladv.
The simple loan, was gracefully acknowledged, but
the manner in which it was granted, escaped the no
tice of the lovely girl, whose anxiety far her mother
prevented her from observing it. As soon as she had
turned from Miss Liston, the former observed, with a
contemptuous smile : ' I suppose it is the first time she
ha* handled diamonds.'
This remark was overheard by an elderly lady, sit
j ting near them, and turning to Mary, she said:
| 'It is q iite possible, youn/ lady, that a grand
I daughter of may not be able to appreciate their
j cost or their value, so well as the daughter ?f a watch
| maker and jeweller ? but it is probable, tlint she has
both seen and worn more than ever sparkled 111 your
| father's ease.'
! Poor Ma y was so overwhelmed by this unexpected
rebuke, and by the altered bearing of her New York
friend, that she could say nothing in reply. She
thought, and truly loo, that the Courtney* were the
source from whence the old lady's information was
derived, and her rival, Emily, became more an object
of hatred than ever.
The beauty and accomplishments of Emily Court
ney so fascinated the count, that he so >n be -aiiir a
declared and accepted lover. Mary Liston then turned
all her schemes of conquest upon the whiskered don,
and every day tended to confirm her hopes of success.
The self-styled don had been the private secretary
o a nobleman, high in favor at the Spanish court. ?
Ambitious and designing, as well us avaricious and
unprincipled, lie scrupled at no means, however vil
lanoua or dishonorable, by which he could hope to
add to his rank or his fortune. He became the wil
ling tool of his depraved master, and at last commit
ted an net at lus instigation, which made his imme
diate departure from tne country the only means of
safety for himself and his patron. Before it was dis
covered, the nobleman procured him a lucrative
foreign appointment, as the reward of his villany.
Finding his income insufficient for the extrava
gant vices and habits in which he indulged, he
was anxious to add to it by a wealthy alliance, and
also to provide far Ins anticipated dismissal from Ins
situation. Mary Liston was tbe first golden oppor
tunity thrown in his way by fortune. He saw she
could be easily secured, but he knew that 'all is not
l>old that glitters,' and wished to make, in th.s case,
? fssurance doubly sure.'
