'"The blast howls like the scream of a wild goose,
and the feather will soon fall in the shape of snow
flukes, said Alonzo to us one afternoon, as we were
standing by the corner of a street, and dreaming of
sleigh bells and warm brown hearths. "Ere yen can
reach your house," continued he, "the storm will
burst forth. Cumo then, and go home with me. You
have beard ?f niy Maria ? a paragon of women? ihe
best of wives? i4//o/i*.'?Vou shall sec how she will
receive her husband's friend."
A'onz.o had mentioned his wife to ine before, and
although there was nothing particularly engaging in
the description, yet one that you often hear of, you
feel some curiosity to see. As we hied towards ihe
mansion which my lriend rented, we met our mutual
friend Daggett. He, loo. had a wife, and straightway,
when he had passed, did Alonzo fall to cominisse
rating the fate of his friend Da/gett.
UA wile he has, indeed," suid Alonzo, but no more
Jike mine than ? than? comparison aches with impo
tency at the thought! Why sir, she hath not the
heart oi woman, which is, or ought to be, all sensibi
lity. My friend Daggett is a fellow of mind? of ge
nius ? but unhappily lie is united to a woman who
caniiit appreciate liim, and who is a complete nobo
dy. Hut here is my house. Enter and see what wo
man con be."
As Alonzo pronounced these words, the door Hew
open. I glanced at ihe staircase, and saw that a
broom had not passed over it very lately. The hall
lamp was uiitrimmed, and the brasses on the doors
o ld not seen rotten stone in many days. VVe entered
the room. A young lady sat by the window, appa
rently counting her fingers, for no other occupation
seemed to engross her attention. Her dress was good
so lar as the quality ol the cloth was concerned ? but
there was a great lack of neatn?st therein, and even
the vulgar idea of soap and water obtruded as we
looked upon the isthmus which joined her head to
lier shoulders. But we had not long to make theso
remarks, as she arose on our entrance and cm
braced Alonzo as if she had not seen him before for a
month. I was introduced ; and Maria gave us to uu
, derstand, that as the acquaintance and friend of her
incomparable Alonzo, we were abundantly welcomc.
Having stumbled over a broom and band box,
which lay in elegant nvgligence in the middle of the
floor, we found the way to a chair, thickly covered
with dust. It was rather late in the afternoon, and
we were glad to hear Alonzo tell her to place the din
ner on tho table. She replied, " certainly, my Alonzo,
nothing gives me greater pleasure than to wait upon
you! i ou know it is my meat and my drink to obey
Alonzo turned to us with a smile of triumph as she
went slowly from the room, and sa d, "can I avoid
adoring a woman who so readily executes all my or
ders. You heard what she said
We bowed and wa ted. I became extremely hun
gry, but in the course of half an hour, we heard the
alow aivi heavy step of Mana approaching the room.
" Now, thought we, we shall break oxr fast. The raw
air givws one a tremenduous appetite."
Maria entered, but instead of bearing in her hands
a smoking platter or a table, her arms were loaded
with books and pictures. We now expected that
Alonzo would seriously chide, but he again glanced
at us most triumphantly and whispered,
" See what it is to hav? an intellectual wife!'*
We were now compelled to examine a dozen vol
umes and listen to the remarks of theenlightened Ma
ria. The sun ha 1 declined \ery near the naked tree
on the western hitl before the subject of dinner was
again mentioned? when Alonzo seemed to start as if
from a trance, and rather pettishly requested that din
ner might be immediately brought in.
The harsh tone of his voice brought tears into the
eyes of Maria, who threw her arms about his neck,
and declared she could not live if he was offended
anil as The al^ *J.' Vwry interesting, of course,

Alonzo had southed his beloved, and dried her tears
lie discovered that his ruffles had suffered much from
the embrace, and gently hinted lhat he should like to
put thmn off and new equip his neck and bosom
"How unfortunately!'' cried sh,, "they have not
yet come from the washerwoman's."
" But, Mnna, my dear, you can send for them."
"They are just gone, ' answered *ho pulluig up
Ihe heel of her shoe to hide a hole in the stocking.
" Why Maria! Marin! how many times have 1
requested you to have a change of linen always on
"1 know it," said she, plaintively, " alas! I am al
ways making those unhappy, whom I love!''
"Don't weep, dear Maria/' bt nan Alonzo.
? Well, said we," looking at our watch, and moving
towards the door? " we have an appointment, and -
" Surely,'' cried Alonzo," not before dinner? hurry
Maria, and have it on the table."
Maria was gone a quarter of an hoirr, when s'-.e
cann* in with a platter of meat, which she carrxd so
daintily, just touching it with the tip of her fingers that
it slipped from her grasp? the dish was broken to
fragments, and tho meat rolled upon thecarpet. Alon
zo broke forth in a violent passion, and accidentally

the floor. His wife screamed and clung to his neck
demanding if he was hurt, and we forthwith took our

dwelling on the opposite side of the street. Daggett's

steps of his housf and invited us to walk in. We did
so. His wife received hs without much ceremony for
?he was bu?ied about household affairs. She asked
us if we had supped, and when we told her that we
had not yet dined, *he moved out of the room as
noiseless as a spirit and as quick as lightning. We
scarcely had time to mark her neatly formed ancle

the table. Five inmates sufficed to cover it with vi

perceived it, and those in the suit of the Count d'Ar
tow, advanced between the combatants, and culled
on their principal to remark that the Duke de tiour
bon had not taken advantage of the opportunities
which circumstances had afforded. The Count, on
hearing this threw away hi* sword, and rushing into
the arms of the Duke, o-llered him every attouement
that he ceuld require, and asked to he rc-siored to his
friendship. The Duke warmly embraced the Count,
and they returned to Pans in the same carriage. Such
were the French gentlemen of that day.
JJehimet Bkv and the He'ioar. ? Mehemet Bey
was for many years the friend and minister of Ma
homed Ali, the celebrated Pacha of Egypt. He was
an excellent model of that noble race which we find
so frequently alluded to in the "Arabian Nights," as
the family of the Bermecides. In 1825 he fulfilled at
Kanknk the ditties of a military commander? and
superintended the organization and military instruc
tion of the troops. One day, after parade, he was
seated in Ins saloon, upon a magnificent divan, orna
mented with brocade and gold, which he had recently
purchased, surrounded by the officers of the army,
exciting the zeal of one bv a reprimand, of another by
a compliment, when suddenly a man covered with
rags appeared at the hall. Want and fatigue had pre
maturely bowed his person, and stamped his features
with marks of age. He advanced a few steps, and
with his head inclined, silently awaited the attention
of the minister.
Mehemet Bey was not slow to observe his tattered
garments contrasted with the gilded iiveries of his
servants. "How is this 7" .*aid he. " Who art thou?
and from whence?" The old man answered with a
trembling voice, " lam a Macedonian P' Startled
at the tone of his voice the minister examined his fea
tures attentively. " Approach," he said, raising in
evident agitation. The man obeyed. The minister
pronounced his name ? " Yes!" h? meek I r respond
ed, it is the same. Bursting into tears Mehemet Bey
threw his arms alwjut his neck and strained him to
his boson in unspeakable grief. "Wear this," he said,
tearing from his neck a magnificent collar, wrought
with gold, and decornted wita precious stones ? and
threw it over his friend and countryman, as he led
him to the divan.
Mehemet Bey introduced him to his officers as the
companion of nis infancy and poverty in Macedonia,
when he had neither palace, nor gilded robes, nor do
mestics, nor power. And he thanked his venerable
friend for remembering him in his days of influence
He offered the poor Macedonian half of his for
tune ? but the old man at once refused. "I ask only,"
he replied, "the smallest apartment in your palace ?
there in quiet retirement let me look upon your splen
dor, and sometimes recall to memory our country
and the scencs of our childhood ? and the evening of
my life will be peaceful and serene." All his desires
were gratified. The minister shared with him the
comforts of his home ? and when he died, he ordered
his grave to be made at the side of the tomb intended
The traveller may now see on the way from Old
Ca ro to Boulok two tombs shaded with sycamores ?
and every Friday the widow of Mehemet Bey resorts
to that spot to weep over her departed hus.hand.
