Cultivation or Silk ?The eultnrc of ailk la daily be coming an object of great importance, and bida fair, in a few year*, to render us independent of supplies from foreign parts of this beautiful and valuable production. It haa been ascer tained by a gentleman, who within the present year moved from New York to llradenburgb, Kentucky, where he purcba aed a farm for the purpoaeof engaging in the si'.k culture, that the soil there is admirably adapted to that end. lie ' On the 18rh of April last, I put eut about 1,200 plants of the Norus Multicaulis ; and as the weaiher was extremely ury , and the season souiewh.it advanced, I was unable to give the around the aetesanry preparation. 1 find the soil possessing lat peculiar requisite quality for the production of a goad ma terial, (which is not generally favoraUle to such a rapid growth,) that it, uniformly Wry? yet I have now about 6,000 plants from four to seven feet high, the growth of the present season, and soon of the leaves measuring twelve by fourteen inches. I also have 61,000 seedling plants of the White Italian Mulberry, mea suring from ten to thirty six inches high. Krom all my former experience and observation ol the silk growing districts of the East, I have never before witnessed such favorable result*. I have fed a few thousand worms the present season, in four successive crof*s froin the fame atock liens, and the result i* truly Hattering. I have 200 acres of land which I shall com mence preparing, and shall extend my pluntaiion of mulberry trees as fast as is practicable. I am also now commencing an extensive Cocoonery. Cotton Market. Thursday, SepL 7, 0, P. M. We may now expect to see some of the new crop of Cotton in this city in about live or six weeks. When it arrives, busines* -will take a new starL The new crop, in (mail quantities, is daily reaching' the Southern marts, and is generally sold as aoon as it arrive*. One lot was disposed of at 13}c., bnt since, 12 c. haa been the higiiest price obtained ; and some went at 10c. in Columbia, Geo. It is generally believed that there is yet a considerable quantity of last year's growth still on hand in tbe interior. The stock on hand in porta is still large? say about 100,000 balpg. The estimated stock on plantation amounts to abaut 60,000 bale*. This large supply, together with the immense stock in Europe, and the abundant harvests that are now about to be gathered, must consi Jerably convince every reasonable man that present prices will remain through the next year. It will be seen by the tables published this day, that the esti mated stock in England is 500,000 bales, against 348,000, the stock i.-ist year, and in France there is a stock of 100,000 against 75,600? which amounts to G00, 000 bales in liotli countries. The stock last year was 423,000, less by 177.000 than thestock of this. The supply from other cotton growing countries haa decreased 12,500 bales, consequently the 177,000 bales is most ly American. The quantity of cotton must increase very fast in Egypt, Brazils, Rahia, Peinambuco and East and West In dia*, if they do not ship it to England or France, for those countries are the consumers of the principal part of the eottou growth of the world. In Egypt the old crop that re mained on hand at last advices was about 100 COO bales, aad the new crop was estimated at 220,000, which amounts to 320, 000 bale*. If that country is a specimen of all the foreign cot ton growingcauntries, we ask how can the present prices a d vanced We aba answer they cannot ! About $35,000,000 in cotton was shipped from this country to Europe last year. Notwithstanding the quantity sent this year will double that of last, yet the value will hot exceed ?$0,000, 000? so great bus been tbe decline in tbis staple. The Eng lish and French markets are now glutted with Cotton. As soon aa Egypt and the other counuriea re-commence shipping, Eng land and France will be completely filled up. It will take fu'l one year to consume it, and unless Spain is the state to take off the surplui from England, we sliouki not be surprised if Cotton did not go beyond 10 c. for at least one year. The fact la, simply, that we have over-traded and over-planted. The planters ai the South must turn their attention to the cultivat on of Wheat, or raising any thing but Cotton. They have over planted that article, and must therefore give up the growth of ] it lor something else, for one year to come. They can then re commence the Cotton growth with some profit. ri'ne stork In Augusta, Geo., this year, exceeds that oi last full 17, SM balei, and the amount on hand, in all the marts, tins year.
