Com* hither, come hither, coaie hither, Here slrill he see No enemy But winter and rough weather. ShaKSPeare. " There must be something in ? ?"I l-*l? established hall a century ' said we to ourselves as we gazed upon a ticket of invitation, headed Hoboken T mle Club upon which, that there might be no possible mistake, a Tur tle was temptingly drawn. ^ Haifa century ! it hallows the thing. We don't care for the eating, though Turtle is Epicure's fare. We don't care for eating, but half a century ! There is no withstanding it, said we. We put our faces direct foi the North River ; ay, to that particular part of the North River where Hoboken Ferry s situated, and tUnt is at the foot of Barclay street. We stepped into the ferry boat ? the beil sound ed ? tlie -;eam pulled ? the boat left her moorings ? the rubicon wus passed. Half a century ! exclaimed we, as tke boat skimmed along the bright waters on which the sun was shining in resplendent loveliness, almost as bright as that of a beau tiful young creature who sat just before us and rather distracted our attention from " Hall a century. She was just about sixteen, but then " half a century. What bad half a century to do with eyes like those which beamed upon us, and might have drawn down the angels. aye, St. Peter himself, from heaven's gate ? What had half a century" to do with lips like those swetet tempt' g '"berry portals before us? Nothing! And vet it Had ? for their beauty and loveliness sent us back 10 the lull extent of the half century, and the pris tine members of the Hoboken Turtle Club. Right, good, jorial. merry, convivial fellows they must have been ? stood Sefore us in imagination ; and now, said we, they are du*;. Fifty years more and tlii* loveliness will be like the strength and manhood of the turtle-eaters ? dust ! At this precise triameut the ferry boat struck against the Huboketi wharf which, effectually ronsin^ us from:::-' leverieinto which we had fallen, caused us to get up from our seat and walk out of the boat without indulging in any further reflections. At the entrance to the wharf, from the shore, we found a can lage waiting to conduct us to the scene of festivity. We entered, and after a short and agreeable drive, found ourself "brought to anchor," as a son of Neptune tad it, at the appointed spot. It was situated in a beautiful copse of voting trees in the Eb-sian Fields, looking out upon the inightv Hud son, just at that l end of the river which gives it the ap pearance of n vast bay. A large space was roped in. ? Within the ei. closure, the table was spread much in such a manner, we 3h?uld suppose, as the table was spread in the forest of Arden. The imagination was immediately carried back to that renowed spot. But we lacked the Kendal green accoutrements for the modern attire, and the venison for the turtle, to indulge long in such lucubrations. Under a sta.e.y tree, stood the famous President, San dy Welch, whuse name is linked as closely with turtles as Laura's is with that of the renowned Petrarch. He received his euests with a dignity becoming the ardu ous lnl>ors they had met to perform. After ti;e presentation, we began to look around us into the pleasant wood. Our attention w as attracted by a little h' or hut which reared it* modest head nigh to the spot where the board was laid, and the knives ylittereu and looked as sharp as the appetites of the as lemhled guests. This hut we found to be neither more ?or less than a kitchen, which had been erected in ynien gone by for tin- very purpose to which it was now put ? to w't, dressing turtles. Passing frttn the kitchen, which sent a grateful in letise after us, we gained the edge of the copse. The view here was most beautiful. The Hudson was dotted with a considerable number of sails, which gave great life to tiie scone. The Bergen hills, the commencement of the long ridge, which ultimately ?ends in the blue moun tains, rose hi loveliness from the waters edge. Nor was the eye charmed alone. Invisible musicians at- I leaded. The hum of countless grasshoppers and katy dids, saluted the ear with sylvan minstrelsy, lik.e ? we were almo-rt getting into another rhapsody when the bell sounded. Every thing must give place to dinner. Poetry is very well when one has nothing else to do but horribly out of harmony at dinner time. Talk of the poetry of rhyming ! Even to those who adore Shaksyfa re, Milton and Byron, what is it to the poetiy | of eating ? answer us ! The turtle was ? but we will take compassion on those who were not there ? and not speak of it. Yet we must finish the sentence. Well, then, the turtle was ? eaten ? enough. After dinner the medal, usually bestowed upon him who earns it by doing the greatest justice to the enter tainment, was awarded to ex-Alderman Thorpe. It was presented by Handy Welch, President, with something like the following speech : San Dr. ? Alderman Thorpe, I have to inform you that the turtle medal is youra, de jure. You have pro ved yourself worthy the honor. As chairman, I am im partial. 1 say it without fear of contradiction. Many a good eater sits at the board this day. Many a one has made a glorious meal. Pome, indeed, almost seem to have starved themselves for a month previous, in or der to win the present distinguished honor. But you, sir, have surpassed them all. by three plates ahead. You therefore will be invested. The medal was then brought. It was large and im posing, being formed of the bone* of a turtle, suspended to a collar of green leaves and twigs. SaXDY. ? Silence, gentlemen. A speech from the Alderman. Alderman Thorp. ? I rise, Mr. President, to retnrn thanks for the distinguished honor. I may say, with the great Roman victor, " rtni, tidi, riei." Ecce sig numf |Tbe Alderman triumphantly pointed to his empty plate.] Yes, gentlemen, henceforth there will be two great instnm <?? of "coining and conquering," on record.
