Ktport of the Thsel Inmstiyntinf Committee?Extriikion ?/
i/r Graves, and censure of the Seconds, ire.
The long agony is over. The committee of investi
gation in relation to the late duel, hare finally made their
report, and astonished the whole House. This commit
tee has held its meetings in secret, and been engaged in
the investigation for several weeks, with closed doors.
Not a whisper has been permitted to escape respecting
their decision, or of what has transpired before them
while in conclave. The very secretary or clerk was
sworn to secrecy, and even after the report had been
prepared and all the witnesses examined, not a syllable
was known of what would be the result. Late yester
day the rule was eespended to enable the committee to
make the Report, which concludes with a resolution re
commending the expulsion of Mr. Gravesfot a breach of
privilege, and the censure of the seconds in the duel.
The effect was electrical, aad after ordering the repert
Co -be printed, the House ad journed. A counter report
was also submitted Wy the minority of the committee,
which was, likewise, ordered to be printed.
This is, perhaps, the grossest outrage which has been
committed, for many years, on the rights of a member.
Owe of the rules of the House requires that when the
character of a member will be impeached, or charges
brought against it,before any committee, he shall have the
privilege of rebutting those charges, and cross examining
the witnesses. But in this esse, the committee, in direct
violation of the rule, hna gone into the investigation and
made its report, without giving the persona implicated
and w ho are to be expelled and censured, the chance of
defending themselves. Wise is quite farious.and Gravea
laughs at this i ti potent attempt to deatroy him.?
l*eople here think, too, it it very strange that the com
mittee should make a report censuring the members of
their own body, and even requiring the expulsion of
one ofibem, for an act of which tne deceased was at
guilty as the survivor, aad to whom they ordered fune
ral Manors to be paid, and absolutely attended his body
to the grave, and wore the usual mockery of woe oa
their arras, in hoaor of his memory, thas approving the
act.
This report will not only give rise to grent warmth of
discussion, but to much heart burning, and may possibly
lead toother duels. Webb does not escape scot free?
but is exonerated from the offence of a breach of privi
lege.
Many of the Whigs here disapprove ef the letter of
Siddle. and object to his making himself the leader of a
party. They do not wiah to mingle themselves with
the Bank question, and think that Biddle was prong in
publishing his letter to Mr. Adams. Honarr.

through which we have hastily ran to catch the plot and
aae story, but which we must read over and again to
drink ia the beaaty of the sentiment, and the polished ele
gance of the style. A chord that vibrates through the
socl is interwoven with every passage of this most puw
erful and sinfolar work; the hidden mysteries of our
aauare, its beauties and its errors, are laid before us, and
meaully we quiver at the touch of the hand that unveils
te us, in all the deformity of vice, motives and feelings
whirl we are wont to look up to as beautiful and good.
The delineations are given with a master's hand, and
the sense must be, indeed, opaque, that cannot discover
their fidelity. The plot is advanced to its denouement
with a versatility M incident and continuously-increas
ing effect that rivet* us to the psge. The characters are
finely contrasted, and the intermediate shades well
filled in. The aohle-spwited Maltravers?the beautiful

fourteen days I
The excitement yesterday was tremendous; from
an early hour in the morning until dark, myriads of
persons crowded the Battery to have a glimpse of the
first vessel which had crossed the Atlantic from the
British ides, and arrived at this port; indeed, it is
said, that every Englishman in the city, at one time
or other, during the day, was gazing at the dark look
ing vessel with the American eolors at the fore, and
the flag of old England at the stern. This excitement
was further increased by the arrival af the Great
Western, from Bristol, which left that port on the 7th
instant, making the passage in fifteen days, thns solv
ing the problem of possibility, and showing what can
be done by cntet prize, expenditure, courage, and skill,
in encountering the stormy weather which these two
vessels have so successively braved and surmounted.
The Sirius, however, is the pioneer, aud to her the
glory of the Argonaut is due.
The approach af the ' Great W? stern" to the har
bor, and in front of the Battery, was most magnifi
cent. It was about four o'clock yesterday afternoon.
The sky was clear?the crowds immense. The bat
tery was filbd with the human multitude, one half of
whom were females, their faces covered with smiles,
and their delicate persons with the gayest attire.?
Below, on the broad blue water, appeared this huge
th'ngof life, with four masts, and emitting volumes
I of smoke. She looked black and blackguard ?ns all
i the British steamers generally are?rukish, cool,
i reckless, fierce, and forbidding in their sombre eolors
, to an extreme. As she neared the Sirius she slaek
I ened her movements, and took a sweep round, form
i ing a sort of half circle. At this moment, the whole
J Battery sent firth a tumultuous shout of delight, at
the revelation of her magnificent proportions. After
making another turn towards Statcn Island, she
made another sweep, and shot towards the East Ri
ver with extraordinary speed. The vast multitudes
rent the air with their shouts again, waving hand
kerchiefs, hats, hurraing to a very great degree. Af
ter shewing herself thus, she took up her station at
the foot of Market street, at a slip assigned to her, and
thus let the thousands rest inqaiet.
It is a singular coincidence that both vessels should
have arrived on St. George's day, the patron saint of
tht country to which they belong. Old England will
exult in the achievement, and great will be the chuck
ling among its seamen and mercantile people at this
prosperous is-ue of so great an undertaking. These
voyages, it must he remembered, are only experimen
tal ones; the Sirius was not constructed for the pas
sage of the broad sea, and cameoiTon her expedition
almost impromptu, and crossed in eighteen days, on
eleven of which foal winds prevailed; yet in the
eighteen days she ran 3 519 knots! The Great
Western was built with more preparation, and has,
therefore, accomplished her object more speedily ;?
but the opinion sow is that the distance can and will
be ran in ten or twelve days, when every thing is ar
ranged and calculated for that purpose.
We have given below the particulars of the con
atrueiion of the Great Western, as we have previous
ly done of the Sirius and the /loyal Victoria, (the
name of which has been altered to the British
Queen.) And here we may be permitted to remark
that we were in error when wa stated that the Sirius,
now here, was the "pig ship," concerning which an
anecdote appeared in the Hersildon Sunday week ;?
the Itoyal Victoria also is a different vessel from the
Victoria onboard af which the accident occurred by
the bursting of a boiler, as mentioned yesterday mor
ning
Captain Roberts, of tha Sirius, was spoken of in
the most complimentary terms by the ladies, his
passengers. "They should," they said, "bavekeen
dreadfully alarmed by the bad weather, but they felt
quite safe when they thought they were ander Capt.
Roberts' eharge, whose celebrity as a steam naviga
tor was proverbial." The cook, who is aa authority
in such matters, stated that the rolling was very tri
fling, and net so heavy as in a sailing vessel, in
short, nothing could have been more satisfactory for
all purposes than this bold expedition, and we truai it
will redound to the permanent profit, as it certainly
does to the enterprise of alt concerned. The results
to business, commerce, manners, arts, social life, and
the moral approximation of the two hemispheres, we
have on divers occasions adverted to, and shall again
when we are not so pressed with news. At present,
we must conclude with the detsils relative to the
Great Western, from the London literary and scien
tific journals, only premising that the Sirius and
most probably the Great Western will leave this
pert for London direct, on the 3rd or 5th May.
The Great Western was designed and built, and is
owned wholly, we believe, at Bristol; so that the
somewhat sleepy but venerable old port, which first,
through Cabot, feund out the vamtio;. in the needle
of the mariner's compass, and established the trade
between this country and Russia, as well as discov
ered Newfoundland, and described diet nctly the coast
of Florida (as many contend) the yearbefuoe Colum
bus mad* hia voyage,? Bristol, waking from her Rip
Van Winhle slumbers, has had the honor of rousing
Kngliah enterprise to a new effort of the highest inte
rest, coming very near, too, at the least, to taking the
lead, nominally aa wall aa virtaally, in that effort her

At all events, the Great Weatern is in itaelf an
achievement sufficient to renew for that ancient city

Mary and John, of 900 tons, 420 years ago. This
noble staamer hag ? burthen of 1,340 tons. How it
compares with the class it belongs to, aad with its spry
littbw competitor before mentioned, may be judged by
the least seaman like reader we have, when we say,
that, ns far as we know, the largest jteani ship in
Her Majesty's navy, aad that a new one, ta the Gor

at New York, and intended to ply as a packet be
tween that city and the southern port wnoee nam*

the Victoria, Hull packets, were considered to be at
the head of the old order of boats ; the former a I ttl*
exoeeding 200 feet in length, with paddlr-wheela 24
feet in diameter, and eng net second only to those
used in the American scheme. There may be a far
ther comparison with the Bristol boat, by stating that
her length is about 240 feet; that each paddle shaft, af
ter turning, weighs 6| tona. and the intermediate shaft
4| tons, with diameters of 18| and 17| inches; thai her

the plan is amphibious, a complete sailing machine
ry?for emergencies of fair winds or accidents to ma
chinery? including four rather low masts, rigged
somewhat in schooner style, and able to add conside
rably on occasion to the boat's speed. It appears
that this ship is much the largest, on the whole, ever
built. The fore cabin is 46 feel long; an ample en
gine room is left in the centre; and this separates the
former from a state cabin of 82 feet in length and 34
, in extreme breadth, taken up, except in the centre,
with berths (like the fore cabin) at the sides, includ
I ing, above and below, and fore and aft, 128 sleeping
| places for one class of passengers, besides which
there are 20 for servants. Of the very costly and ele
gant fittings up of this grand saloon we can add no
' thing to the plentiful details furnished by the daily
papers; suffice it to say, that Mr. Parris has had
! charge of the decorations, which are in the style of
Watteau and date of Louis XIV., and that no pains
seem to have been spared to outdo the Liners, and
" astonish the natives" on the other side of the sea.
We should not ffrget that, affixed to the frame work
of tho engine is an indtx, by which the number of
strokes performed by the machinery, and the rate ol
their performance, is shown with the greatest accu
racy, and which, it is staud, without requiring to be
again wound up, will mark as many strokes as suffice
for the whole voyage to New York.
Finaiiy, she must doubtless be pronounced as
staaneh a piece of British naval architecture as ever
floated, as well as the most elegantly decorated of all.
Her engines have been proved?the boat has been and
will be thoroughly tried throughout?200 tons of car
go will be taken, if olfered; and so the Great Wes
tern, hoisting at length the lion-flog, will commence
her march on the mountain wave, with the motto,
vietory or death. She is expected to make her pas
sage out, under average circumstances, in fifteen
days, and tho retnrn voyage in twelve. Fair luck
befall her!
But we are not yet done with the steamers. We
promised to give a summary of all that is proposed
by the various parties, and we have not yet named the
greatest of all the lions by far?we mean the Victorim,
now on the stocks, at Limehouse. This extraordina
ry ship is the project and property of the British and
American Steam Navigation Company. Their plan,
as first announced, was, to build a hue, composed of
two British and two American steam ships, of great
tizecach, as sufficient to keep up a communication
twice a month to and from New York; the reason for
uniting the two classes, being, of course, that British
ships, by treaty of commerce, are not permitted to
take foreign goods to the United States?they must
be shipped in American bottoms; while, on the other
hand, Amensan ships are not permitted to bring for
eign goods to England except for exportation only.
By the union of both, all descriptions of goods are se
cured. These four were expected to make as many
passages to and fro as eight sailing packets would.
More were to be added as required. The tonnage pro
posed was 1,200, and the herse power 300; and the
ships were estimated to eost 40,000/. each. The an
nual expense of such a vessel was rated at 18,430/., in
cluding fuel out and home fir six voyages, or for
42 000 miles. This calculation, which wetnink werth
J'reserving, is exclusive ef the charges incident to
reight. These, with the profit also on freight, are
contingent. Set down this at 400 tons measurement
goods, with eertain prices, and 60, 80, and 100 pas
sengers, ef tbrrc different classes, and we have 4 600/.
receipts on freight. The expenses on the same being
rated at 2,520/., the net freight out and home is made
to amount to 3,880/., or above 50 per cent per annum
on prime cost; or 30 per cent with a net of 1,200/. and
800/. out and home. We subjoin, for reference, the
following items of the annual expense of the floating
establishment: ? Commander, 300/.; first mate, 109/ ;
second mate, 80/.; third mate, 60/.; surgeon, 100/.;
twenty-five seamen and apprentices, 600/; ten fire
men, at 60s., 360/.; oVie engineer at 150/.; one at 100/.,
and one at 80/., 330/.; one carpenter, 50/.; oil, tallow,
and tow for engines, and other small stores, 1,000/.

It would be scarcely possible to express Ike satisfaction thin

physician of many yeai a experience, and one also who is hon
ored wile testimonial letters troin the bight at aurgeona in En
rope to the moat eminent in America, as Dr. Molt of Nets York,
nnd Dr. Pb) tick of Philadelphia?its directions are followed
with that confidence and regularity which ensure success. In
this little volume, not only are the different kinds of the dis
ease described with plainness, but the cure ol those other and
more distressing symptoms which arise Irom constitution, ha
bits ol life, age kc. Is also given will, great clearness, so that
those whose health and spirits are almost broken down tor
wantoi proper treatment, are led at on?e to see their error.?
To every man of sense it must be eviuent that nothing can be
in .re unwi-e than to trust himself to auy ol those boasting
n< strums which are daily advertised as certain cures in al
those varying circumstances. Indeed, it is to those, chit Ay,
that we hear ol so many persons continuing 011 from mouth to
month uneureit, and it should be also known that it is uet only
ilie anxiety el mind, alio great expense incurred by these de
replions.hui whe, a clap or gleet is suffered 10 remain so long,
nothing is more common than a stricture as the cons, queries.
Now, a stricture, i not removed by proper means, is the most
erious thing ibaiean possibly happen, and, which makes It
worse, it frequently exist* where neither the patientnr the
docu.r once suspects it Moreover, this is the stage ofthe dis
ease ia whicn to much ignorance and knavery is practised by
advertising persons. There are those, for instance, who pre
tend to cure a gleet arising from this cause, with a box of
piils. or a bottle of drops, when every surgeon knows that ait
the physic in the world would never cure a stricture. For
these reasons, therefore, the author has been particularly anx
ious to make the cure of strictures plant and easy and in this
he has succeeded most completely. Many have consulted hrna
nu strictures who aie periectly astonished at the e.-se nnd
quickness wilb which they are cured, having lor years tried
every other uieans in vain. Indeed, undei the author's mode
of treatment, nothing is more safe and easy than the cure of
strictures.
The remaining chapters of this little volume are on the sub
ject of ven-re?l disease, properly so called, in which every
symptom from lis very first beginning dow n to its most ne
glected term, are staled with the utmost clearness. In all their
singes ihe treatment w ill he seen to be exceedingly eR*y and
effectual, so dial, with the a-sis.anee of ihe litile chest, any
one may undertake bis cure with pert* ct safety, in these chap
ters also, w ill be found some fans detailed njion the effect of
old venereal taints on children. Many who are about to mar
