[From our E renin* Kditio*-J From WiiklngtoH. WASUINOTOfT, Atrii. 2fth, 183d. The house Was been almost bored te death with tire reading of the report, testimony and proceedings el the Committee of Investigation in relation to the late duel. Franklin seemed to be delighted when the last page was read yesterday, and threw down the manu script with as much pleasure as if he had Seen relieved from the weight of a mnuninm. The whole journal of the Committee, verbatim rt literatim, was read, even aowu to the name of the Clera. It merely served to show the nature of the questions allowed or forbidden to be asked of the witnesses : the names and number of members attending: the ayes and noes on every ques tion ; the propositions and resolutions submitted. Ac. The debate re-commenced yesterday on tin- motioa to print and postpone, by Mr. Toucey, the Chairman, who entered into an elaborate explanation and defence lit the conduct of the Committee, which has been severely censured by several of the members of the House who who have spoken on this subject. The general feeling here is adverse to the conduct of the Committee, which is spoken of as unparliamentary, arrogant, and utiaulhoi ized. On the most ot the ques tions there was but a bare majority ; the vote standing, four to three: but on the resolution declaring Wise de serving of decided censure and Jones ot censure aim ply, they seitin to have been unanimous. 1 think it is propable they will try to put the whole matter to rest by ordering it to lie on the lable. The fashionables of the sex have deserted the galle ries during the moat of this duelling concern. Some few ladies from Philadelphia have attended daily from having no other resoart*-, and a desire to show their charms, which, however, 1 do not think very striking. The belles, foreign and domestic, generally remain at home, and leave the gallery to those whoaie more anx ious to figure in that atena. They are holding hack at present for a succession of gaieties, which are to take place next week. Two May halls, a party by PostoiW) le ininietre dt France, a party by Fox, the Envoy ??tra ordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of Great Britain, the races in the neighborhood of this city. Ac. Ac., are to compensate for the dullness of the past few weeks. The intended party of Fox has excited great astonishment among the citizens here, from its unexpectedness and novelty, and will, I suspect, be something brilliant, aa it is to be in honor of the birthday of her Majesty, Victo ria, hit Queen, sad the first one he lias given. Pon toise, 1 understand, denies that he famished the infor mation, respecting our commercial embarassmenis, which lias Ween attributed to him in the Paris papers. 1 should not charge him with anch art offence. He is quite toe harmless for that, and I should be more dis posed to attribute it to bit attache 8 , who has a strong propensity to dabble in politics, in which he fan cies himself an adept. Pontoiae is a ban virant, good natured and harmless sort of person, disposed to let thinga take their own course without troubling his head about any thing. His partiea are very brilliant and agreeable, though he has no female to give them n cast The Intelligencer' has copied from a Boston paper some common place rei.^"1" of tt pretended sojourner in Washington, respecting *.^e w>lks about this citv( which, from the extravagant puff th eontain en the 17. S. geologist, I should attribute to the gc^ff?1 himself. I have always thought that Uncle 8am w?? disposed to create sinecares, or that old Jackson wished U-* main tain his character of an L. L. D. or A. S. S., by the crem ation of this utterly superfluous office. Why does a of Congress abolish it at once f Itia not calculated to afford the least benefit to the country, even were it filled by a man of real science, animated by the most ardent enthu siasm in the pursuit of knowledge. Jackson has done a great many foolish thinga. and Congress, his obedient creatures, ftas sanctioned them. Of Mr. Abert I may speak hereafter. The election of Mr. Keanedy in Baltimore and Mr. Slaughter in Patton's district, in Virginia, hat utterly confounded the locofocoa hete, and the poor fool of the Globe finds it useless to chant the cuckoo note of demo era tic victory any longer. Nobody now believes him, and he disgorges bis falsehoods and nonsense in no pur pose. A change seems to have come over the spirit of the dream of the locofoeo party here. They pretend in rejoice at the success of thu wnigs, because, they any, without attaching any blame to the administration, the country hnd become involved in such disorder and oon fusion, that they really feel that something should be done to cure the evil, and aa the dominant party art too much hampered aad bound by their pledges to carry out the measures they had proposed, it it absolutely ne cessary that these should come in who will pursue a different system, and restore the country to its former prosperity. It were well, if snch as are aet in ojfirc should think ao toe. Poor Kendall or Vandal, aa the French papers call him, seems to find no rest for the sele of bis foot. He is haunted by the Fire King wherever he goes. His ?lumbers are net enly disturbed by Caiilhumpiana, aad hi* waking keura by the thunders of the press and a guilty conscience, but his office ta haunted by the incen diary. The other day. as tbe sweep was ascending one of tne flues of the building occupied by the General Poat Office, he came tumbling down the chimney, fob lowed by a bag of powder (about 4 lbs ) that had been dislodged and had fallen en his bead. If it had been fired, the explosion would have been awful, and peer Kendall, in all probability, blown to the devil. The Senate has net been in session today, and the Benatora are enjoying the fine weather with which we j are at last visited. Tbe Heuse conUnass to waste iu time on the duelling report, and every member appears desirous to muke a Spuech or two on tbe question. Gam. is getting, aa the aegrn says, extremely oneaey, aboat what he calls the jntblic hutxntu, The treasury ta nearly run agrouad, and he wants another issue, end thu power to re issue tbe amount which has come ia. He iu as fidgety aa a hen with one chicken, and looks ?? if he could eat ap every man who rises to apeak. I think it ia likely the Whiga will insist upon the trial of the members accused immediately, and if they secceed. there ia no telling when it will end?certainly not before your return fVom your contemplated voyage to Europe. I send you the conclusion of a very voluminous doe unicatftransmitted by .Secretary Woodbury to the House, in obedience to ? resolution of 1833, end just printed. just or Hoi ORACR. Trial or Thomar Hector at Alrajtt.?The tes timony in the case of Thomas Rector, on trial for the murder of Robert Shepherd, w?? brought to a cloae at 3 o'clock on Fnday afternoon, at Albany.
