MONEY MARKET. Thursday, April 4?41 P. M. The stork market was uncommonly flat to-day. The sales wore to a limited extent. Long Island declined \ per cent ; Mohawk } ; Penus) lvauia 5's | ; Ohio ti's ; ; Kentucky B's } ; Farmers' Trust 1. Harlem advanced j per cent ; Canton >. United States 6's, Norwich and Vicksbtirg closed at yesterday's prices. The sales of real estate lately comprise principally productive property situated in the lower wards of the city. Prices do not, however, rule so high as at the commencement of the season. Heal astute averages about twelve-and-a-half per cent better prices, than it did last year at this time. Lots in the upper part of the city, are in verv little rvmiiui ani .nlA tirouirht prices corresponding with those current for several years pant. Foreign exchanger are very steady. We quote prime bill* on London at 108 a 108} ; on Paria, of. 37| a6f. 38JThe deinan l, however, at preaent la very limited, on account of the recent departure of the ateamahip. The Boston money market continues very easy. Stocks arc in very fair demand, and prices firmly sustained. Railroad stocks are parti-ularly active: Lowell sells at 24 per cent advance ; Maine 4 do; C oncord 22} ; Kitchburg 2 ; Worcester 14} ; I'rovidence A ; Kastern 0 ; New Hampshire 6. Marine Insur&nco stocks are unfavorably effected by the political subject agitated. Manufacturing stocks are not in so good favor as formerly, in consequence of the anticipated movement on the new taritl'bill in Congress during the present session. Notwithstanding this, the mills of Lowell are in active operation, and large additions to those already built are in contemplation. The manufacturers of Lowell have capitals large enough to compete with those of any |iurt of the world; and the policy of creating political capital in Washington, by contracting their movements, on the introduction Into Congress of a measure calcu. lated to place them on a par with all other interests in the country, is so perfectly understood, that nearly all the effect is lost. The manufacturers of the Last have so long been used to protection, that it is with the greatest difficulty they can give it up. When they required it, the country freely granted it, to the injury of other interests ; but any farther aid from government is not required to ensure their existence. The Senate of I'eunsylvania were engaged on the 3d inst., on the second reading of a bill to enfore the indiva al liability of the stockholders of all banks, for their notes and <ie|>oiiU. It passed a second reading by a vote of 21 to A. Tiie bill, as passed on a second reading, makes the stockholders of all hanks hereafter created, or re-chartered by the Legislature, jointly liable for the notes issued by their respective corporations, and the stockholders of banks now in existence, liable for the notes issued by them after the passage of this act- It also prohibits the reissuing of any notes by any ofthe banks after the first of September next, unless the same are endorsed by the Cashier atjflhe date of re-isMiing -penalty, forfeiture ol charter. The bill contains thirteen sections, and prescribes the manner of enforcing the above liability, which is by scire facia*, by an assignment of the banks, under the second section of the act of March 12th, 1842. The directors are mude individSallv liable in case of fraudulent insolvency ; and in case the holder of any stock, who would bo liable to pay by virtuo of this bill, shall be insolvent, whoever else held the stock at any time during the six months immediately preceding, shall be liable to pay the same. There has been no further movement in either branch of the Pennsylvania Legislature regarding the State debt. It is reported that a resolution passed the house by a vote of moro than two-thirds, the substance of which is, that thc> would not adjourn until some provision had been made to pay the iuterest on the public debt. The importation of merchandise into the port of New. York, for the quarter ending the 1st inst. compared with those for the same peiiod last, shows aj great increase in favor of 1944. The imports for March of this year, compared with February, shows an increased business in this line, although the receipts from customs at this poit were larger in February. Washington. [CorrKipou 'ence of the Herald.] Washington, April 3, 1844. All in in a slate ot great excitement. The deepest anxiety to hear from Connecticut. Great excitement about annexation?especially imong the IVhigt. You inay see little knots of hem, Crittenden, Morehead, Choate, tec., dec., ivith their heads together. They are in a most lisconsolats dilemma?they have to choose beween Clay and "the peculiar institutions of tho iouth." They are outrageous at having the quea annot put it off' till ufter the next presidential slection. But as I have said before, so 1 say again, .hat if compelled to vott, it will be in favor of annexation This is the reason why all the whig papers and bulletins are so zealously asserting that nothing will be done or can be done this session. Nou< at to Webster's movement against Texas, (litre is no doubt but it it made to embarrass, or defeat Clay, ami procure for himself the nomination. He owes (.'lay no good will He is Jar himself. Wlule both parties deny that annexation is a party movement, it cannot be longer concealed that the great mats of its best friends art Democrats. The publication oi tins fact, however, will do no good either to annexation or to the Democratic party. The southern people are waking up to very high excitement about annexation. And you may expect it will sweep all before it at the South, whiga and democrats. Clay's prospects look more precarious now than heretofore. General Tallmadge, front New York, and the Hon. Peter A. Browne, from Philadelphia, are liete attending the National Institute. There is a respectuble delegation of savans from the different sections ot the Union. Their meetings are only valuable and interesting to science?I could makn nothing out of them for the Herald. [We think, differently.?Ed. Her ] I have just seen some of Calhoun's friends. A Mr. Cralle is to be the head Clerk. Mr. Calhoun will endeavor to carry on the negotiations for Oregon and Texas, vari nattu Thi-rc in nn truth in tin* report that tfie negotiations have been at all interrupted between England and thin government tor < Vegon. The land in negotiation is between 49 deg. and 54 deg. 10 mill. Washington, April 3. 1 see it going the rounds of the papers that Messrs. Benton and Wright will vote against the annexation of Texas?that " they have corue out against it." 1 am authorized to give an unqualified denial to both these statements. On the hi i*hut authority at Washington, 1 can say that Mr. Wright has axpreSsed no opinion on the subject, either one way or the other, and that it is not known by any one how he will "vote. As for Mr. Benton, he lett here on Saturday to join his family, and will not be back here again until about the first of May. He has not yet reco vereu irom nit* sliock lie received, and lie cannot yet bear the fatigues and excitement of the Senate, where for twenty-live years last pant, he has been more steady in his attendance than any other member of Congress. But from the most competent authority at Washington, and that which is entirely authentic, I can state that he is entirely for Texas. I have renewed reason to confirm me in the statements 1 have already made, that if compelled to vote, the whole South will move together in favor ol annexation. There is not the slightest apprehension now of President Tyler making any political capital out of it If any is made in that ijuarter, it will he by Mr. Calhoun. I will not sav that the time has not been when Mr. Benton might have feared that his vote in favor of Annexation would strengthen Calhoun against Van Buren. Hut that time is not now, when public opinion has so clearly marked him out as the democratic candidate. The news has just arrived in the city of the defeat of Van Buren in Connecticut. One reason here assigned for this defeat is the efforts of President Tyler to convince the democracy that Van Buren is not an available candidate, ana to induce them to nominate him. On this head the Madisoman says? Twir.n luivo tlifi frionrin of thft Pmririent thrown thair weight into the Van Bnren acale in ('onnecticut, and elected tin- Van Union candidate* , and immediately alter their aucceal, Mr. Van iiuran'i organ* have invariably dn. nounced the I'reaident moat ungratefully Hence, *a shall ever protait against any of our friends "helping" to elect Van Ituren candidates again, anywhere?or Van Buren himself. Hut the excitement is so great here to-night that it is impossible to get at any truth. The hopes of Calhoun's friends are certainly rising. Much party and clique will assign just tuch reasons lor this defeat as will best promote their own interests. The enemies of annexation will certainly assign for the reason the hostility of the Whigs to that measure. S. B. TWBNTV-KItillTll CONOHJCNM. f IHST S K IO W . Senate.
