Those who sav so do uot know the man. He rfi a man of un doubted aud indisputable talent and ability; he if, tuo, a very shrewd, far seeing man and politician, ambitious, aud very desirous ot raising himself, wb le his personal tortune is so large as to prevent ttiat lrom being any impediment, as he is one of tiie richest men in South Carolina, la point ot talent and ability, there can be no companion in stituted between Mr. Rhett and Mr. Pickens, and wmlethe appointment of Mr. Rhett would send a worthy minister to England, and one who would be tar more likely to out-general their diplomats, than they would be to out-general him, it would,at the same time, withdraw a ihorn, and a sharp one, too, trom the side ot the administration, which leads to " incidental " discriminating protection and so forth. riut there is one other consideration mconnec ion wiili the mission to England. Is it not advisa ble to truu-fer the ne?;oiia'ii.ns respecting Oregon to London? Would not Mr. Calhoun, like the seli sacrtticing man that he is, withdraw his objections, and uo.v tnat apparently a dark cloud lowers on the horizon of the political firmament, would he not accept the mission to Euglaud with lull powers to negotiate aud settle the Oregon queetiou? What man more fit, or better able to take this matter in hand? lie is tully acquainted with the subject. He hoi*, up to a very rtjeut period, been engaged in tins very negotiation. The whole country will willingly commit to his hands their honor and in ttrcbtj (mowing that lie would never forsake or be ir.iy them. Mr. Pakenham has borne testimony to liis diplomatic talent and ability when he de clared that " Mr. Calhouu was the hardeei man he ever had to deal with, tor there was 110 getting round hun at all." What man then, more lit, or to whom do events point as better suited to the cri e'k, the position, and the duties of imnister to England, than Air. Calhounl The whole eouutry would ratify his nomination with acclatr.atiou, and he, the patriot and the statesman, would waive personal feeling for ihe benefit of his country. * Washington, April 26,1845. Mr. Stldcn, of New York, in Washington? The yew Voile Appointments?Minister to Spain? Mr Saunders?Vice President Dallas and Sup positious Mileage?Pennsylvania. Appointment s-^ Applicants for Collector and Postmaster at Phda detphia?NiU's of the Virginia Elections?Captain Bolts Headed Again? Why don't lie Die i Mr. Selden, late whig candidate for Mayor of New York, is in this good city of Washington.? Wnat does he come tori what is he after 1 are general inquiries. 1 am told that he has come to S'e about matters and things <n general, and ar range some in particular connected with the Presi dential succession. This is v-ry probable, aud his movements must be looked after 111 consequence. Tt is not worth while now entering into s,<ecula tions as to ine New York offices, which are to be tilled, as a very short time will di-close the fortu nate recipients. Tiie PostOlIice, Marshalehip, and Naval Officer, are all the berths which are to be tilled, so tur as 1 remember, and I think tor these offices there are at least 150 applicants. The ex pectants must eoon be satisfied, or? dis-atialied, and as, ot course, only one can get the office, the b Jane, I suppose, will be dissatisfied. A report has gained considerable circulation dur ing a t"w days past, that Romulus M. Saunders is to be Minister toSpaiu. 1 know not whether there is any truth in tin ; report, but it is not improbable, if Mr. lrviug should return home. Mr. George M. Dallas, Pice-President of the United S'.ates, is in t?wn. 1 presume he has come to loon after those suppositious mileage accounts, aud to see if he cannot obtain a quid pro quo there tor, from tome of the recipients, or else he, per haps, thinks lie can manage to appropriate another similar sum ot the public money. Nevermiud.it is me "dear people" who pay, and Mr. Vice-Pre sident Dallas will, perhaps, not forget that it is also the "dear people" who vote, particularly it he should ever happen ou any occasion hereafter to be a candidate tor their sutlrages. However, to a man who lias been accustomed to United States banking transactions, such a sum is a trill*, and it matcers not if it do come trom the people's pockets, or whether the recipients have a right to it or not. There is perhaps another reason in addition, which has brongnt Mr. Dallas here. Perhaps he wants to job in the disposition ot the Pennsylvania olHces.? Nous vcrrons In the meauume I may give an item or two ia relation to some of the applicants ttierefor. Collector of Philadelphia. | ^?plicants are in nuinoer, iegnin. The principal are, Dr. G F. Lehman, Henry Welsh and Henry Horn, and ol cours-i Calvia Blythe wishes to be retained Leh mau was a candida'e for Congress last fall, and de lected by Levin, the native elected by Whig votes. He is a worthy man, aud has the support of the " Young Democracy." He was one ot the Penn sylvania Electors who voted tor Polk and Dallas, mid was active in getting up th? recommendation for Buchanan to be Secretary of State. Welsh is also a good fellow, formerly editor of the Peni^ sylvauid Reporter, then a wholesale merchant ill Philadelphia, now a resident of York. Horn is the candidate of the Old Hunkers, the imperson ation of the self-constituted Van Buren clique ot Philadelphia. The influence of Buchanan is said to be tor Lehman or Welsh, that ol Wulker tor Welsh, and the President lor Horn, but this is lioub'.lul?very. Horn is the man ot whom Gen. J.tckson said hecaii't lie; butYoung Hickory thinks lor turns-sit, independently ot Old Hickory. Horn will probably be pitched overboard, in which case h's brother John is to be made Treasurer of the Mint, as a sort of salvo to the 7/i>rH-blowera. John was Naval Officer under Van Buren, and is an Old Hunker too. The Horns all came into the support of Polk at the eleventh hour, but perhaps this is the reason why President Polk will provide them with cffices. It is a regular pitched battle, and ,ier haps Dallas is come to throw his influence tnto the ncai? or some m me applicants. 7Vic Post Office.?Applicants of course numerous. Principal, ones Colenel Jas. Page, Andrew Miller, who wrote au anti-native letter during the excite ment in Philatlt Iphia, and Col. Thomas B. Flo rrnce. Page was Poatmas'er under Vau Buren, and of course go?s his death for a " restoration " He was a good olttcer then, and as polite and ac commodating as a bachelor on the wrong side of 41) could be, and cxact in his accounts wuh the Department. H? is, however, regarded a9 an old hunker ot the first water, and the "young deino eracie" preferred Miller, whom they familiarly term Andy Miller. He is a thorough going radtcal, ait anti-native, and poseesnes other claims to the allecnons of the fierce " youug deinooracie." Col. Florence is both youn? and handsome, and lias c laims to be considered a man of letters in more sense* than one. He it was who told " Boz," when he went to Philadelphia, that he carried his heart in his hand, mid he would probably like to carry the key of the Post office in the same place, as he has probably room enough for both. I don't know whether he is any relative to Florence who keeps such capital oysters in Broadway. Perhaps he is. If so, might not his relationship to such a caterer of good tilings entitle him to attentive con sideration from the administration. There's no telling which will be appointed. Toe news of the Virginia elections comes in very slowly. The gains and losses, so far as heard from, both for members of Congrens and State Legislature, are about balanced. The democrats have bright anticipations of enrrying the ttwte, nnd electing a Senator, but ihe result is very doubtful. Botts has got headed again. Why don't he die, or perish in ihe attempt ? He promised to die if he didn't head Captain Tyler; and he didn't even try to die, though Captain Tyler heeded h<m, instead of him heading the Captain; and now he has got headed again. He's tt mean fellow, or else he would have d-ed before; nnd I suppose there'? no hope of his dying now, because wn'-n a man onre becomes mean, he f?oes from bad to worse. It's too bad. * * * Waimisoton, April 25,1840. I.ieuimant Wilhet til (Ac brr?Jlrtion for Maltreatncnt nf three Mariners ef the Exploring Erpeiition, <f'C. At about six o'clock last evening we were visited by a black squall. The clouds rapidly accumulating in every direction, came up from the South-West, with the fpeed of a hurricane. As the gust approached the city, a dense cloud, palpable as a swarm of Egyptian locust*, filled the nir. Stablrs and out-houiea were blown over, chimnies brushed otf, signs swept away ; arid as the blait entered into the avtmue, it became as dark as night with Uie dust Several hacks were upset, and the horses of others alarm ed so that they ran ott. [Correspondence ot the Herald.] rHiLADiLrHiA, April 27, 1345 There is nothiDg of importance to communicate to-Jay in the way c.f local news. The weather is fair and warm, with occasional clouds. In spcikiag yesterday of cheap literature, and the independent press, 1 forgot lo in form your readers, that Zfiber k Co., agents of the Herald, is the principal house for vending these publica tions iu this city. It is said that Zeiber contemplates bringing out, shortly, some very important works, which will, doubtless, makesomo stir in the literary world. The violent recommendations of some of the native press in this city, was attempted to be carried out last night at the Arch street Theatre. The house was crowd ed, and a few men had italioned themselves in various parts, for the purpose of hissing down the new piece oi ?? The Fashion, or how to write a Comedy." During the play of llomeo and Juliet, every thing was quiet, if we except the applause bestowed upon the acting of the Walliicks. At thelallof the curtaiu there was aloud cr'.I tor them?some delay took place?the house became impatient, and Mr Stevens, the ctage manager, appeared, leading Mr*. Wallack, before the audience. He apolo gized tor the d lay, stating that Mr. W. bad left the thea tre some ten minuted bi fore, and could not be found, and he was, therefore, obliged to return thark* lo the audi cncnon behilf i fthe lady. Shortly alter ihif, the play of ?? The Fashion" commenced, and is it proceeded, sun dry attempts bt hissing were made; but the audience were in too good a humor with the drollery be fore them, and so they promptly put down this exhibition of malice. Thu play then proceeded lor some timu without interruption, till at length some rascal from the gallery threw a handful of gravel stones at Mr Burton. The house was immediately in an up. roar. Crie* of" turn him out," resounded from all quar ters, and a rush was made towards the part from whence the assault came. Mr. Thayer, who was playing the author, tried to allay the excitement and pacify Mr. Bur ton, who wai very much enraged at the treatment he had received. He was calm, however, and looking to ward the gallery, remarked (hat he was vety much obliged to the person who hsd pelted him, but he would be much more obliged to any gentleman, who sight re. cogni/.e tho man, to point hiin out to the police officer* or i urn him out of the building himself, and he, Burton, wouid take the responsibility of the act. " I call upon my officers," continued Mr. Burton, "to do their duty and preserve peace in the house." The general rush which was made towards the gailary did not succeed ia catching the offending individual; a search was instantly com menced, ond it was some time before the house became quiet enough for the play to be resumed. Mr Burton tnen stepped forward and apologised to the audience for the impel it u* tone he had assumed in ordering a parton to be turned out of the house for misconduct but he said h? was compelled to do so from n sense of duty to himsell, and them He looked upon such disorder as an insult to them rrore than to him He wa* bound as manager to protect the audience from annoyance, and to render then all the satisfaction in his power. They had givsu their money to come and see his performances, and they oould not enjoy them as they ought if he were to permit such interruptions us the one which had just been witnessed. At the conclusion of these remarks, three cheera were given for Burton, and the performance was then resumed, the. conspirators not venturing above u hall-suppressed hiss for the balance of the evening. A more disgraceful I attempt to put down a man by violence seldom or never was a'.tompted, and what make* it more attrocious Is that the exntement w>.s got up by a newspaper editorial call upon the disorderly element* of our city, by an appeal to 'he worst passions ot the human heart. That a public pre?s should be prostituted to such base purposes, and made the vehicle of private or public malice, is <*ep'or able, and merit* the molt signal rebuke. The editor who so abuses the trust reposed in him, is a traitor to society. He is trying to establish a dictatorship which will bring every man in the community under his supervision?a tyranny iimilar to that established by Marat, the terrible denonr.cer cf the Frerc.i Revolution; and it i* for the in terest of society, for the interest* of liberty and of man kind, that when au editor evinces a disposition to estab lish such, or has not sufficient judgment 11 prevent his paper from being mn'!e an instrument for the dictation of othHrs, that the community should rally and put down th it press and that editor forever. Th?i real " Fashion," at the Walnut, drew a crowded home last night. 1 iioChrsnut has opened for n summer campaign with Richiugs as Stage Manager.
