MY THUS UIIA Washisutom, May 58, 184f. Mexico?Only a Few Wordt?Departure of the Preetdent and Suite. There are many persona In thla city who think that we will soon have peace?that, although It la conaldered treason to thlnkofao desirable an object, there la a wholesome leuven which will, ere long, lighten the maaa of Mexicans So wide haa been the field of operatlona in Mexico, that much embarrassment at first resulted to our army operations, and hence the frequent changes of the plan of campaign; but when (Jen. Taylor was relieved of apeolflo cabinet Instructions, and given discretionary powen, there was something like system, and efficient action.? (Jen Scott, also with discretionary powers, gathered up all the laurels which were too many miles off for Old Each to reach. And this resulted, for the plain reason that the Cabinet looked more to diplomacy than to war ' No good, that we are aware, has resulted from the proclamations of Taylor, Kearny, and Stockton, to the Mexican people The promises of our chieftains, have been viewed as so much wind. In fact, they have not sufficient sense to appreciate the "conciliative" poliey; but when Mr. Trlst reached Mexico, Gen. Scott Issued a proclamation, which has been already read in New York It will he seen he coaxes, appeals, and threatens, and tells them what we will do if they den't make peace. It Is unfortunate that while protection Is promised to chureh property, the official organ of our government should suggest the sequestration of the church property. Thoee interested in keeping up the war will use this to our injury. The fact is that Mr. Kitcbie baa not discretion; he thinks so much of Richmond that he frequently writes the name for Washington. Another editor would have been choseu long ago, but for reasons which it is not material just now to mention. It is all nonsensu to attempt to win the Mexicans with kind words; a proclamation is not half as potent as a cannon ball. The ('resident of the United Htates, Mrs. Polk, Secretary Mason, Miss Mason, and Mr. Walker, Private Secretary, left for North Carolina this morning, to attend the ceremonies at the University ou Monday. SUB8T1. Steamer Powhatan,) rotomsc River, May 28, 1847. ? The Preeident'e Trip to North Carolina. Magnificent morning. At 0 o'clock A. M. the President and suite came aboard at the same wharf where the boat left John Tyler in the spring of'46. The party consisted of his Excellency James K. Polk, P. U. S. and lady and niece; J. K. Walker, President's Private Secretary , lion. John Y. Mason, Secretary Navy, two daughters and two sons, one a midshipman , Lieut. M. F. Maury, U. S. N.. and son. The company were attended to the boat by Hon Cave Johnson and a number of friends ; but there was no unnecessary parade in the outset?the departure of the party being as quiet and unostentatious as that of a company of private citizens, as it should be We are now passing the classic and sacred gTound of Mount Vernou, the mansion looming beautifully above ihe surrounding oaks and poplars on the summit of the hill; with tho grim port holes of Fort Washington frowning upon the steamer from the left, close under which runs the channel of the river. The excursion, from the beauty of the day. and the spirit of enjoyment in the party, promises to be one of unmixed pleasure and recreation In our next, we propose to amplify upon the Journey, from the embarkation onward. The race over the Canton course yesterday, between Fashion aud N. Green's bay horse Passenger, was one of the best contested and most spirited races ever witnessed in Baltimore, The purse was for $600, three mile heats The first heat was won by Passenger. In gallant style. , and the second by Fashion. The third heat was beautifully contested, aud was declared by the judges to have been a dead heat The horses were then brought up for the fourth heat, and they run neck and neck nearly the whole heat, Fashion coming out half a length ahead of her gallant competitor. Much dissatisfaction was expressed at the decision of the judges on the third heat? a large number of those present believing that Passenger won the heat by several inches.? Bets upon the race were reluctantly given up, and some were drawn, both parties believing Passenger to have been entitled to the heat. The track was in fine order, and the concourse of spectators greater than I hnve ever seen on the ground before. Bets previous to the race, were five to one on Fashion. The time was 6:46?6:61 6:61 ? 6:03. Certain it is that Fashion found it necessarv to strain every nerve to gain the rare. on the eastern and western shores of Maryland great, distress is beginning to exist on account of the shortness of the supply of breadstuff*, the whole country having been drained to eupply the demand for shipment It la with difficulty that those who have money can obtain food; and those that hare not, of whom there appears to bo a large number, are in a state of actual starvation. An appeal Is being made to our citixena to furnish relief, and I have.no doubt but that it will be liberally responded to.
