r" Interesting Intelligence from Cltngrca and Panama. New C >kleans, April 26, 1849. Ed.tor ok New Yoek Herald:? I take the liberty of sending you a list of all the vessels at Panama and Chagres, and a few remarks relative Chagres Bar, and my travels across the Jsthmus to Panama. vessels at panama, apr1i. 12TU. Aiiieririiii whale ship Niuntic, Cleveland.of Westport for San Francisco, to sail the 20th April?will curry 000 passengers ( shin. $200; steerage, $150. English brig Two Brothers, to sail on the 18th April Chartered for $36 000. Peruvian brig Josephine, to sail on the 22d April. Tickets $200 throughout. Two suiall Chilian brigs, to sail about the 23d April. Tickets $150 and $200. Four Chilian sehooners, to sail in n few days. A large brig coming to anchor, and a large foretopsail schooner in the oBing as 1 left I understand the brig was chartered before she anchored. The American Consul informed me that two large whole ships were looked lor in four or live days, and the steamer California was hourly expected. The English steamer was due in a few days. The tact that a great number of persons were at Panama for California, had been sent up and down the coast, and in all probability there will soon he vessels enough to take all the passengers on the Isthmus away. vessels left at chagres april 17til. Steamer Maria, Burt, for Now Orleaus, same day. Brig Doctor Hitchcock, for Galveston, 20th April. sclir UHit'na.ior a hwiultq pun, ucxi uuy. Sailed Brig Leverit, Arthur, lor New York. my thavkls from chagreh to panama. April 9th. Left in a canoe manned by two men? at nine came to for the night, at Kicona, a small village nine miles from Chipei. April 10. At 4 A.M., proceeded up the river?at nine stopped at Doce Harmonas, and took breakfust eighteen miles from C hag res, and the head of steam navigation, at the present low stage of the water. At t> P. M., stopped for tVie night alongside of the bank?through the day passed several rapids and shoals where the current run down about live miles per hour. April 11. At 4 A. M. proceeded up the river and arrived at Golgona at 3 P.M.?stayed all night. April 11th. At 7.30, A.M., started for Panama on a little pony, and arrived at Panama at 3 P. M. had a very pleasant ride across on u tolerable fai path and most of the time in a beautiful shade and a place of entertainment every live miles, where you can get a cup of coffee and u chicken and at the' half-way house, kept by a genuine Yankee, you can get as good a plate of pork and beuns as New Yorii can produce, or even Beverly. (>n my return J met several ladies, and it was ouite a novel sight to see three or four ladies on their little ponies wending their way through the mountain pass. Seventeen miles from Golgona, spoke the American boat Isthmus Express, nine tons burthen, Ryan, master, two days from Golgonda, bound for Punumu, and expected to arrive at Panama in six days?she had a crew of thirtyfive men, mostly New Hampshire hoys, and was on two wheels; some were cutting down trees and removing all impeding objects, and others were pulling their little bark over the dryland through the mountain pass. Friday, April 13. Arrived at Golgona. Spent the day ; and, next morning, proceeded down the river, ana arrived at Chogres at midnight, having been absent one week, weli pleased with my excursion. It is perfectly healthy on the Isthmus; and, I should judge, there was two thousand people bound for the gold regions, and vessels enough at Panama to take away about one thousand passengers, and vessels expected in a few days to take the balance, exclusive of the steamers, so that, with a safe calculation, there will be no difficulty after a few weeks of getting away from Panama. I think the Isthmus is the safest and most expeditious route to the gold regions. As it respects Chagres liar, I cannot conceive that it is all hazardous; and, with the aid of the steamer Orus, it is as safe as Sandy Ilook Bar. Yours, iVc., LUCUS B. TERltY, Master of the Brig Pedraza, N. Y. Movements of California Emigrants on t-Uc 'Western Frontier, [Correspondence of the St. Louis Republican.] Independence, April 19, 18-19. Notwithstanding the lurge number of emigrants congregated in this vicinity, very little material, other than that of procuring a register of the various companies,is*u (forded a reporter, upon which to base his communications. A case of accidental shooting occurs almost daily, (and it's a wonder they do not occur oftener, so careless are persons in liandling their fire-arms,) bnt even here an *' item " is forestalled by u special and earnest request that it will not be reported, us " the wounded party is in a fair way to recover." In my next, however, sonic cases, not specified ns above, will be given. In addition to the companies from the .State of Ohio, previously forwarded you. the following are in camp in this vicinity, and ready to move, viz:? " The Western Mining Company of Cincinnati," composed of Alexander W. McCoy, John Ellisof, A. J. Liggett, D. Aber, P. W. Van Winkle, 4. Beard. W. P. Jeffreys, John Marbley, W. W. Knapp, N. M. llarris, G. L>. Sheppard, W. B. Otway, F. Cassim, S. T. Curtis, M. Ternan, N. Ternan, K. Barret, Edward Owens, Dr. J. Thompson, M- Thompson, It. Thompson, C. Aileswortli, A. Rogers, Edward Hurd, J. Vansant, M. J. Martin, J. 15. Sargeant. C. A. Anderson, T. Silmon, B. McCormick, and Bamhart, all of Hamilton county. They are provided with seven tents, seven wagons, twentysix yoke of oxen, and a mule for each man to ride. They go as a joint stock company, with ample provisions, (5cc., for nine months service. The company is mostly composed of mechanics, who carry with them their tools, and complete running gear for a saw mill. Of the large number emigrating, very few have taken similar precautions, nearly all relying for subsistence upon their success at funding gold. Should tliev be disappointed in these expectations, their all is lost; for even if the necessary tools are to be obtained in that country, the exorbitant prices will render it ini|>ossible for the great majority to obtain theni. The captain of a_ company remarked to-dav, 111 my hearing, that his men, ufter purchasing their outfit, had ample means to maintain them some time after their arrival, but now could not average two dollars each, in pocket. This is the case, 1 fear, with too many who are emigrating; when their outfit is obtained, they regard it as all-sufficient. " Gold is plenty in California," and with this us their motto, they seem determined not to be burdened with its transportation, and recklessly and foolishly relieve themselves of the supposed drug. 1 hope none may in their anticipations lie disappointed. The second hails from Cincinnati, and is under the style of " Mutual Mining Association of Cincinnati." It is organized as a joint stock company, and composed ot the following persons:? Win. Moore, Captain; Jacob Bennett, J. Powell, Win. Mdlan. John Johnson, John 15. Hart, John Atkinson, w. L. Isgrigg, U. A Powell, D. C. Morris, N. Butterfield, N. Clary, John W. Walton, L. Dewey, W. They have two wagons, six innles to each, with two extra mules to ride. The company is composed of mechanics and professional men, who go with the intention ot engaging in such business as their capacity und means w ill allow, should their golden expectations not be realized.
