How rnanv, in addition hare occurred, we : cannot tell, and will not be able to d> no uutil the j ' City Inspector hand* in hie weekly rep >rt Kver riuce the epidemic broke out among us. there has been a marked variance between the number of ca?es reported by the Board ot Health and thiM? certified to by the City Inspector, the latter, in some oases, reaching seventy-five and eighty per c<ut iu<>te than the . Other. This arises from the fact that u great mauy of { our physicians do not make any returns at all, from some reason or other?perhaps on account of having ao much to attend to. As an instance ot the disparity 1 between the two returns, we have oompiled the follow- , lng table, showing the number of deaths, each week, slnee the cholera commenced, as reported by the Board of Health, and the auiuber, each week, reported by the City Inspector Board ok Health. It Is. therefor#, clear, that all the cases of death, by cholera, are est reported to the Bosrd of Health. As S great many people are comparing the ravages of tha cholera, this year, with those of the years 1832. and 1834, we publish the following table, which shows the number of dtalhs, in the respective years, for eight weeks after the epidemic broke out: ? 1882. 1884. 1849. The following table will explain thil aatlsfWr'orily:? 2882, Population .. .226 000 Deaths, eight weeks,. .2.801 1884, " ...206.000 " ' .. SOS 1840, u .. .426.000 " " . .1,647 According to the above table the epidemic has, thus hr at all event*, not been near so fatal In Its effeete as It was In 1832. In that year we had a population of two hundred and twenty-flee thousand, and the number of deaths for the first eight weeks was 2.801; whereas In 1840, with a population of 426 000, the deaths, for the same period, hare been only 1.647. If the disease had heen as bad this year as It was In 1832, the number o deaths, Instead of being only 1.647, would, in proportion to the increase of population, base reached, during the Ight weeks just elapsed, the eery large number ol 6.380 There Is some consolation In this, ludeud. we do not wee how It could be othirwi*e In 1832. the city was without any system of drainage or sewerage; but since then, many miles In leugtb or sewers have been constructed at great espcuse and coiuparatieely speaking, hut very little surface aateresists at the present time In the elty. Rut It may b? urged, that thn cases of death by diarrhea cholera morbus, cholera infantum, and dysentery, which are every week reported by the City Inspector. ought to be added to the cholera oavee. This does not follow, because they are not included in the returns ef 1831 and 1834, haelng been then, as tbey are this year, put under separate heads However, we give the aoneied table, showing the nunbvr of deaths that have taken place this year from those causes, so as to place every informatioa on the subject b< fore the public believing that It It better to give tbeni the true state of things than to adopt any concealment In the usttir CAolcte CAwlera Dytts- DierrIn/antum.
