I TH NO. 5921. THE SCIENTIFIC CONVENTION. Oar New Haven Correspondence. TH* american association for thk advancement of scivncr. FOUKTll DAY. N^w Havkn, Aug. 23, 1350. At the afternoon asaeinbly yesterday evening, the -following irnjiortart comaiunicalion was made by the learned President, Professor Bache. kotes on 'i he meeting of the american association at charleston, fkxsbntbd by kel^wkst of thk standing committee, by the president of that .mketino, profhsmjr a. d bache. The American Association, at its meeting at Cam bridge, it will be remembered, determined 10 bold au intermediate meeting betweeu the two regular annular meeting*, and selected Charleston, South Carolina, as the place for holding it The meeting was deprived of the MMN ?t the President of Ihe year, Professor lieury, by the pressure of im ortant duties, requiring immediate personal attention, and in hi.-. absence 1 was requested to preside, and at the close of the sessions was desired to give a notice of the doings to the members assembled at New Haven. 1 had intended to give such an account as I was able of the papers nad and communication-i made to the Cliarleoton meeting, but the industry and veal of the secretary, Dr. Lewi* 11. The labor thus involved would he considerable; : bat by dividing it among a considerable number, it : would fall lightly upon any one. Besides, there are ! always those who I'kc such labor, or, at least, are i willing to encomia- it for the improvement in analysis which if gives, from a desire to do good, from a sense of duty?various worthy motives. As to i the discussions, are they fully presented in our present arraugi-iiients ? Whut is wanted in regard to them generally is not a full report, such as the admirable systems of stenography aflbrd, but a discriminating, brief, and pointed note, such as can | only be given by n person who understands thesub| ject. In any single section, what one of us could undertake to giv- an account of the discussions on all the subjects which come up 1 And it we pass from one section to another, how impossible would it be for the best informed to succeed in such an attempt I It appears to me worth consideration, whether we may or may not make more effective arrangements for printed accounts of written and nrul <<<imniiini/>?tinna uvi/4 nfHi&Anaaimta iK >n tKn>u which we hare heretofore had. 2. The meeting in sections is, perhaps, indispen1 table to the despatch of business. At Charleston, when we lmil probably one hundred members in attendance, it was not necessary, and we fouud . tfreiit advantage in the discussion of subjects when ! the dillerent lines of science crowed each other, j Thus ihe apparent subsidence of the coast of South , I Carolina and the temperature of the -irtesi in wells, < of Alabama, brought out physical facts and reason- j inga of inteiest, while the communications of Lieut, i Maury on the currents in the Atlantic, of Prof. Le | Conte on the exudation of ice ftoin the stems of vi yetabies, uud others, culled out a coirtspouding j contribution ftom the naturalists. As theje remarks are refuted in but a few cases, a very irnpoiurt feature, nnd one which rendered me meeting perhaps more interesting and useful thin any otiier single feature, does not ..p^ear in the |>ut>li.-hed proceeding*. Is it not worth considering w better, without losing the advantage of a division into societies, by which lime is, no Kiubt, saved, and too icli populating of tine subjects I, wc i ukl not, in uerlaiu cases, have ul>e ud?au i /.f-ueral meetings for the reading of pnpi rs ! lt.ibstract* of i ll com nunic itions were prepeted befer hard, nnd forwarded to the standing committee, they could select< tioh comiiiunie it ion J i as it was deemed desirable to have presented i:i i;en< re I meetings ; but their labors would thereby be | fiteatly increa?t d, ucd tho.-e of the in inbers in :i | similar depite. It ui milw iwrNnuni tli?n in imagine thr ivory bull to vibrate with sucli rapidity as to make a few millions of oscillations in each of its successive positions ; or, to state a definite case, let it vibrate five hundred thousand times in each anguUr second of its progress, and yet let the ellipse of vibration make its entire rotation in the one-thousandth part of a second of time, still the whole will not be too great for the truth, sinco the number is six hundred millions of millions per seeoad. Professor S. also exhibited another article of hW invention, by which the lecturer can enable his audience all ai once to try the experiment of complimentary colors in vision. The apparatus consists of two discs, a foot ?r more in diameter, and perforated by three openings, and the other behind it, painted v*i;h alternate v\li::e and colored sectors. While ihe hinder disc is so situated as to show the colors through the ajiertures, the spectators look at a fixed |K)iri' en the front disc till the eyes are a little weary, when t?' o|ierator suddenly remove , the colors, and renders the whole surface white ; but, instead of appearing white, the three apertureu are seemingly occupied by a beautifully dilute tint of the complimentary color. The experiment was repeatedly and successfully performed. On the results of the discussion of the Tidal Observations, msde in I he coast survev at Out Island, in the Gull of Mexico, by A. 1). 1>acuf, Super intenden'. Those .At Cat Iblatd were the type of this class. The discussions applicable to them, reduced to rule, wo.ild answer for all others of the class. The progre s of such u discussion he pro(iosed now to present. Hitherto, it has, for the most part, been taken for granted that the water which penetrates through the soil and the interstices ?f rocks, is capable of slowly dissolving these material - Ttie actual proof of the solvent power, by laboratory experiments, and the mode in which it breaks down the cohesion of mineral Illttrur?, uj nuatniuj; uic mm , iiifi^nroia, JTUUM.U1 of iron, soda anil jiotash, hud never, except in one or two instances, been distinctly bhown. Prof. It. then enumerated a list of bimple minerals and rocky niasa< a which had been the subject *f experiment with pure water and water impregnated with enrb. acid. These included many varieties) of felspar, mico, hornblende, ser]>entine, epidote, zeolites, Sec., as well as granites, sienites, traps, lavas and other rocks, bach of these, in line powder, gave, by the interp.iracious method of the tache, unequivocal proof of the solvent action of th* carbonated water, tind many of them were distinctly p.ctcd on by pure water. All minerals containing lime, magnesia, prctoxid of iron, potash, soda, or In Kin, werft found subject to this decomposing action. Many of them, when in larger quantity, digested in the liquid, yielded a sufficient u mount of bolid matter to tho -solvent water, to admit ot a quantitative determination. The British Minister brought the subject (> before the government at Washington, and com- ti munications with the Governors of all the States a were had relative to it. Local committees are tl formed in the different Stated to promote the con- ti tributions of this country to the Industrial lixhibi- v tion, and the attention of this association is earnest- t] ly called to it. One of the subdivisions is for raw material and produce. The vegetable and animal tl kingdom is worthy of being exhibited. Machinery b is another class; and it seemed to him of the hi^li- t( efet importance that the attentinn of this country 1 should be called to the fact that 187,(XX) feet of (l space hud been allotted to America for the exhihi- tl tion. li is important that nothing should be sent il abroad but what would do credit to the United ti States, and confer a beneltt on the individuals lor- e, warding their prcduce or manufacture. hi [Mr. Johnson is secretary of the Central Coin- it nntiee for the United States, on the exhibition of M industry of uII nations, to be held in London in hi 1851, to whom all communications are to be nd- i'r dressed at Washington.} j,i The meeting adjourned at 9o'clock.
