SiTfBnty, January 10 ? 6 P. M. The market to-day was buoyant, but transactions were rather more limited. It appears to be difficult to get up an exoitement among outside speculators, and it will re quire considerable nursing to get it well under way. There is too much anxiety among holders to realize, and the moment a little improvement takes place, the mar ket it flooded with stocks. This causes a reaction, and outrider* are deterred from taking hold as purchasers; At the first board, to-day, Erie Railroad advanced per eent ; Morris Canal. X; Harlem, N. J. Zinc, North American Trust , ; Sussex Mining Co., Heading Railroad, New York and New Haven Railroad, 1; Erie Income Bonds, ,'4. There was more doing ia Reading Railroad, the sales being dividend off. Very few believe that th? dividend has been earned, and many holders of stook have less faith in its value sinoe than they bad before. This company have a large floating debt, wbioh must remain unpaid, and not only so> but allowed to increase. The special act cf the Legisla ture ? f Pennsylvania, prohibiting this company from enlarging its construction account, seems to have not hsd the effect intended. Since the pa'sage of that act, a floating debt of one million of dollars has accumulated, and uo provisions have been made for its payment. In the face df these things, a dividend of three and a half per cent has been paid, and the stockholders are, no doubt, glad to get it To secure the greatest benefit from an investment in this stock, it would he necessary to sell out. as soon as the dividend is paid.
