The first named one was very practical in' its nature, and the remarks of the orator upon the pre vailing dissipation ot our young mwi were severe although often well merited. "The United States?a Peace Society," was the telle of a well written oration, by Benjamin V. Ab bott, M. A. Its object was to prove that a peace policy is more conducive to the true interests of mankind, and more conformable with the character of our republican institutions, luan the system ofag greflnve warfare adopted by other nations. "Our Union, said the youthful orator, "is the most exten sive and efficient Peace Society in the world. The ? long lives ol some- nations have been sprat in per fecting the art of war, in buruishmg their arms in organizing armies and navies, in erecting fortresses. It was reserved for us iu our youth to develope, to ?lace upon our standard, and to elevate for tne at intion of mankind, the true maxim of national peace?A Pluribu?> Unntn.'' The exercises concluded with a benediction, pro nounced by the Chancellor, and the audience quietly separated, after a prolonged attendance of several horns, he orchestra, which was under the direction ot Harvey J. Unknown Man A rem kntai.lt Drowned ?Coroner Wil helm on Tuesday held an inquest at the foot of Eighth street, Fan River, on the body of a young man wao-e name is unknown, a band on board the schooner Sophro ma, of Jersey City, who cams to his death on Friday lavt, by the breaking of a plank leading from the vessel to the dock, rn whicli he wss at the time, precipitating him into the river, and before assistance could be had he sank un der the vessel and was lost. His bodv came to the sur face on Tuesday, and an inquest was held by the Coroner: the jury returned a verd'ct of accidental drowning. John Scrivener, a local elder of the Methodist Church.
