Respectfully, the public'l obedient servant, New Yirk, Dec. 24 1863. MAX MARETZEK. Police Intelligence. DISHONEST CLERKS?A SYSTEMATIC PLAN OF ROB BING THEIR EMPLOYERS?01BI1B OF A DRY GOODS CLERK AND MODR OF OPERATION ? UK COVKRY OP' TDK PROPERTY, ETC., ETC. It is often the subjtct of ren.ark and astonishment as to the manner dry goods c eiks, employed in various ex tensive establishments in this olty, manage to indulge in extravagances on a salary of tire hundred dollars per annum, when, in truth and n fact, their expenditures an cunt to three times that sum. The question natu rally arises, how is it done? Why, we reply, their era ployers icdireotly foot the bills out of the pilfering* made from the goode in the store. We do not wish to be under stood that we condemn the dry goods clerks as a body? Dot so by any m.ans?for, take them as a whole, they are honest and very intelligent; yet it is in many in stances the intelligence they possess whioi leads them into dishonesty. Again, their position requires them to dress well and to be of good address. Womon of doub'.ful reputation are frequently the most liberal purchasers at the stores ; the clerk beoones acquainted with those characters; and, to sustain their position and maintain their favors, it becomes necessary to make presents ; hence rich dress patterns, and other c stly articles, are smuggled from the store for such purposei. liilliard rooms aut oyster eafocm. too, are also places of resort, and debts con tracted for private suppers require money to dis charge them ; and all this must, as a matter of eourie, come out of the store of their employers. And how can it be otherwise ? Their salary can not support the extravagance, and dishonesty mutt be resorted to in order to defray their expenses. In many laatanoes they beg-n by embezzling small articles, and a< their wants increase and they are not suspected, they con tinue to deal more largely until, by soma unforeseen cir cumstance to them, their dishonesty is discovered, and before they are aware of the fact, the police officer tap them on the >;houlder and requires their attendance at the Tombs. It was but a few weeks ago that a clerk In the employ of Meters. Stu&rt & Cj., was found to be dishonest; th-t crime was clear against him, and he could have been in careeratcd as a felon in the Sta'e prison but through tb good fetling of the complain?ntn, a pun shm*nt wa awarded by the court of only a few months confiueinen in the c ty prison. About a ve k ago the police record) exhibited the ar reel of another dry goods clerk named Timothy C.
