In conclusion the Committee offered a series of resolutions, rescinding the former contra, ts and graving for the adoption of the report. Mr. Cesar moved that each ward be Included as a ae l<a rats district, as the work would be perforated much U tter when divided into smaller districts. Mr. Hkkd stated, for the benefit ~ ' imuinl) that required to be cleanea. It was ia view of that fact that the committee were induced to include the Nineteenth, Twentieth, Twenty-ftrat, and Twenty second wards in the Eighteenth district. Mr. Cvurr. ? If any of the member* of the Board will take the trouble to ride up town in my ward, be will find that there are more than two streets in the ward that need cleaning. Mr. Fky. ? 1 would like to know who the dirUion line of the districts -hall belong to, and which of the contractors chiill clean tho^e street* dividing the districts. Mr. Kbd ? The contractors wiM settle that matter; each one will clean his half of the street. Mr. Ci'ltkr. ? One of the contractors should clean the street, for if the work is divided nothing will be done, and the dividing streets will never be cleaned. Mr. Coftovn. ? Kacli contractor ought to clean the street north of liira. from the Battery up, and so on to the 'l'wellth ward. Mr Ssily. ? I hope that no amendment of that kind will be adopted, hither one or the other of the con tractors should hare to clean the streets. They could easily arrange that between themselves he knew rery well. Mr. Rekd. ? There are not twenty streets in the Twen tieth ward cleaned that are paved. Mr. CTRKV ? 1 would like some gentlemen in the Board, if there are auy in it who could say that there were even live streets in his ward that were cleaned and were not paved. Mr. McIntyke mo?t positively asserted that there were twenty blocks in thai ward tiiat were cleuned and were not paved yet. Mr. Ct'fcRY ? There are not twenty streets In onr ward that are not paved and are cleaned. The question on Mr. Curry's amendment was then fee ing put, when Mr. Willi rushod into the cluunber and said that he was s little later than usual, aud wished to know what the quctioii was on. < ?>'? You ought to have been in here sooner. Mr. WnD? 1 Was hifct by an angry multitude in the P.u k, wl.o besought me to have the 9treets cleaned. The Chairman then said that the question was on the amendment ol Mr. Curry. Mr. Wiid ? 1 would like to speak upon that question. It is publicly known that great efforts have been made to have the streets cltaned in the different wards, but we never have been snccessful. Tiiat something immediate has to be done no one could deny. The citizens abuse us for not getting them cleaut d, and the pupers come out on us most rcaudaloutly. Now the amended charter is the cause of ?1 1 this mud in our streets; the contractors have thrown up their contracts, aud the people are con frequently knee deep in the mud. A Mat KM ? I would not sit here another day for the honor of the thing, were it not for the pleasant associations that 1 hare connected while in this Hoard. 1 hope that every man, woman and ohlld, will get a copy of the charter, read It, and see whether the Board are to blame for getting the streets into such a dirty condition. There are outside an angry multitude who are asking us In loud terms to clean the streets. Incrxabzd Ran or I.vnmwr.? In the New Jersey Legis lature, a bill has passed both houses, allowing the pay ment of interest, on special contract, at the rate or seven per cent, in Hudiron and Essex counties, and in the city of tytttson, instead of si* ;w cent, u heretofore. The business men of these counties finding it exceedingly ditfl 1 cult to obtain money for business purposes at six per cent, while in competition with New York rates of in terest, have exerted themselves to aecure the passage of this act. Anotiifr City I>Rojacna>. ? A bill to incorporate the Bay City Company, which propose* to locate on the bay shore, south of Jersey City, has been introduced in the Senate by Mr Bramhall, of Hudson county. Knew*. ? Intelligence was received in Jersey City last evening, that n man named Jacob Hopper committed suicide at Iloboken yesterday morning by blowing out his brains. Ku.ikd. ? Mr. Albert 0. Van Saun, of Hackensaclt, fifty - 1hree years of age, was killed in an instant on Friday by being caught in the machinery of a saw mill. Si icidx by Poison at Hobokkk.? Judge Morris K. Crane lield an inquest yesterday on the body of Susan Griffith, of 206 Bloomfield street, said to be poisoued by laudanum or strychnine. A Coroner'* jury having been" empannel led and several witnesses examined, the doctor*, Julien, Elder and Thompson, brought into the court room the results of their post mortem examination. There seem* to be no doubt of the death of Mrs. Griffith by poison, but as to any evidence in respect to the party adm mis tering said poison we are requested by the court to ab stain from any publication thereof for the present. The case has been postponed to the 13th Instant In order to obtain a thorough analysis of the parts containing tho poison. The Fire and Riot at the Rome Medical College. [From the Rome (N. Y.) Republican, March 4.] About ten o'clock this morning a tire was discovered in the upper story of Kobin*on's Block, on Lock street and the tow path, which for two years past ha* been used as lecture and dissecting apartment* of the Eclectic Medical College. The engine* were loon on the spot, and the Are was soon put out, with little damage to the building, ex cept by water, which was considerable, as the whole was completely drenched. The building is a large one, five stories high, and built of brick. The first story is occupied for manufacturing puri?>Bes. the second and third by families, and the fourth and fifth by the college. A* soon as the fire was extinguished the attention of persons engaged was at tracted to tho dissecting room, where the lire originated. Here an awful and disgusting sight was presented Bodies and portions of liodies lay scattered around? limbs, ribs, skulls, Intestines, and slice* of human fleah in great profusion, as though just dissected ? met the eye* of those who had entered the room, while the horrible effluvia from the burning of human flesh in two large stove* in the room, sickened those who ventured near. The physicians speedily disappeared. These sights enraged those who were present, and im mediately commenced a scene of riot difficult to describe. The windows were raised and broken, and many portions of bodies thrown out upon the crowd below. Among the rest a small Coffin was thrown from the fifth story win dow down upon the tow-path and burst open by the con cussion, when the body of a child, apparently six or seven ' years of age, with a head almost as lerge as'a peck mea- I sure, was exposed to view, the coffin being broken to pieces. This body was permitted to lay upon the tow-path ten or ? fifteen minutes before any one ventured to remove the ! disgusting sight, and hundreds went close up to examine it. Including many respectable looking females. As soon as the riot commenced Sheriff Chadwick, Jus tice Cuddcback, and their officers and assistant*, inter- | fereil and took possession of tho building, which they , cl< ared and locked up as soon as possible. 'llie police force deserve credit for their energy and 1 good management in quieting the riot bo soon; but we rear, from the fnellnga manifested and expressions among ' the crowd, that the scenes at Cleveland last winter may j be expected here, und the riot lie renewed. Had the oc currence taken place in the night not a vestige of the building would have been saved. It will be well for the police to be on their guard, and ready to meet auy emer gency that may arise. Something Myirtfrloiu In HarlTord. [F'rom tin- Hartford Courant. March 6.] Some time last October a Granger, calling himself Har rison, hired a part of a house in Wentherafield lane, for himticir and wife, of K. G. Drake, Esq . , and soon after moved into it? other families occupying the other por tions of the house. He soon loft, and hai seldom been seen since, only returning for a short visit once or twice. His wife has been also much absent, returning generally in the night, anil leaving again soon, forming no acquaintance with the neighbor*, and leaving the tenement empty and locked up. last Monday after noon the norse of a sick woman in an adjoining tenement heard a sort of rapping through the di\ ision partition wall, and supposing the tenement still empty, as no one had been seen or heard in them for four weeks, was of course not a little surprised. Fancying it to be spirit rapping*, no examination wax ventured upon until the return from labor of the sick woman's husband, in the evening, who determined to ascertain the cause, and en tered the tenement by a cellar-way. the doora being bolted. On going into a chamber he was startled to find, lying in a bed, a mere living skeleton ? the wife of Harrison, wasted to a shadow bv starvation, as it appears. Assist ance was at once rendered by the neighbors, and the first selectman early next morning, on being informed of the facts, despatched a doctor to the scene and sent a load of wood to raise a fire. Every possible assistance was ren dered her, but all came too late and sho died on Friday morning. Little could be learnt from Iter, as she seemed rather to shrink from enpuiries. Mr. Hawley, the city missionary, was more successful tlian others in Min ing her confidence and drawing her out by kind ness. She told him she was ft widow by the name of Sarah Bartholomew, until she mnrriod Harrison last fall, about the time of their removal Lore ? that she had been sadly deceived in Harrison, and ra wretched indeed? that she had a sick mother in New Haven, whom she went to take care of fuur or five weeks ago, and returned about a week previous in the evening train, in hopes of hearing something of her husband or finding him at home, but found him not ? that half famished and cold she crawled up stairs to bed and to die, where she bad remained ever since, a period of lis or seven days, without calling for aid or "making a sign." ' She aaid she had a son named John Bartholomew at work, as she supposed, in a lock factory in New Britain, I aged 17 or 18. to whom she addressed a letter some weeks ago, but received no answer. Such is the history, as we get it, of thisntrange affair. The woman appeared intelligent and respectable, and the furniture, aomc of which had not been unpacked, de noted respectability and great neatnesa.
