The AMsMent on the HwUan Hirer Railroad. TWO MKN KILLED? OTHERS BADLT INJURED. Another of thou- fearful accident* for which the Uudeon River Railroad I* ?o di*tingui*hed, occurred on Friday evening near Tivoli. The 5 o'clock express train down from A'bany, ran into a rook weighing aome four or fire tons, which had fallen aero** the track, damaging the engine very much, and shivering the tender and baggage car into splinters. The train wa* of the usual si*e, consistiugof flri- 1"* ? aenger car*, none of which were injured. The excite ment, for a few moments after the shock, w*s very great, passengers running here and there in the wildest coufu aion. The time of this sad occurrence was a few minutea after 0 o'clock. The engineer. Mr. Jair^s Scott, who it one of the Aid eat, and regarded by the company to be the most care ful man upon the road, was found lying in a senseless condition some distance from the engine. HU face an 1 head were b'ondy, and at the time it was supposed that hi* akull was fractured. He was taken to Tivoli, where he wa? attended by a physician, who found, u|>on ex amination, that the skull was not broken but only se riously braised. Yesterday the physician prouounc?d Mr Scott out of danger. Two brake men, named Charles Dortrand and James McLaughlin, were also taken up in a senseless condition. These unfortunate men were horribly bruised about th* face and head, and the 1-mb* of both were broken. They were taken with the rest to Tiroli, where every attention wa* paid to their wants, but in vain. They both died before morning, and were brought to the city by the 12 ?'clock train yesterday. Neither of them have families. Mr. 8tmp*on, the train master, and the fireman, were both slightly hurt. The fireman, a* soon as the aooi dent occurred, wis active In rendering assistance, but in a few minute* fainted, and was carried to Tivoli. He re covered. however, in a few hours, and he and Mr. Simp son were yesierday Voth out of danger. K. S. Caldwell was the conductor on the train and t PHcaped unhurt, although his escape, together with that i of several others, wan most miraculous. The train mas- | ter, conductor, baggage-master, expressman nnd several others, were in the baggage car at the time of the catas trophe. They were thrown down by the ahock. and wedged in the machinery and rocks, but none of them were hurt but the exprestman. and he but slightly. Thu was a most wonderful csc&pe, inasmuch as the baggage car was Instantly dashed into splinters, not a piece of it j being left that a child could not carry away. t The engine was the St. Clair, a new one, which hit not ' been running more than a month. It was thrown upon it* Bide with its head from the track, in which condition it was f( uud yesterday. It is not so badly damaged but that it can be repaired and again put upou the roa 1. To ' add to the consternation of those present, the tin took j fire, and had not the pa-sengers and others exerted them selves to the utmost, by bringing water in their hats to quench the flames, the disaster might have beeu more extensive than it was. The train, which was due here at 10 o'clock on Friday night, owing to the catastrophe, did not arrive till no.ir 7 o'clock the next morning. Not a single passenger was hurt. ? The cause of the rock falling is not known. Men have keen engaged blasting in this vicinity for month* past, and the most reasonable hypothesis in regard to the af fair, is. that the falling mck, which rolled from the top of a high hill of rock, was recently shattered bv tho blast ing, and has been for some time loosened from its natural bed, ready to roll down wken least expected. When it fell upon the track tlie signal man saw it, and tho train wa* already in sight. The man hastened to <ive the warning, hut before he had time to do so the train was upon it pud the wrst had been done. Murine Affair*. liifTBMio* OF THB Picmo.? Yesterday was marked by one of the heaviest fogs ever known l>y our oldest inhabitant*. It was so dull and misty in tlie morning that many were puzzled to tell when it was daylight. The wind was light from the northeast. and continued so during, the day. Tba collisions were not upon the rivers alone, but along the streets. Handcarts butted up against omnibuses, carriage* and carts interlockeiAheels. and all animated matter were mingled together in confusion ? and all on account of the fog. It was sn exceptionable fog. Dickens never was in such a fog. although he makes a great splurge about one in the opening of his --Bleak House." Meu walked along ns if they were about blind, feeling their way through the misty cloud that hung upon tho metropolis. Navigation upon the rivers was performed under diffi culties. It was worse than Egyptian darkness. In the night time, lights may be hung out, and thus a guide given to all water craft ; but such a day as yesterday. light was useless, and pilots entrusted all to Providence and chance. There were several accidents, which we have collected, as follows:? Early in the morning the South ferry boat Bedford, ran slam into the head of pier No. 2 East river, over throwing several of her passengers and creating a great deal of consternation among them. No one on l>oard was injured. The string piece was completely de molished. Shortly after the above, the ferry ltoat Transit follow ed suit, by striking pier No. 1. Part of the passengers were landed at this place, none of them hurt but much frightened. The ferry boat was not Injured. At about 11 o'clock, as the l*>at Wyandank was c-oss ing the East river from the Atlantic Hock ferrv abreast Whitehall, she came in contact with the steamer Storm, and stoved in her wheelhouse. guards, &c. Tho confu sion by this collision was of the wildest imaginable. Both boats were loaded with passengers, none of whom knew where they lay, or what was the extent of the disaster. Women fainted and screamed, men ran here and there, ami brave men tried to keep cool in the midst of the darkest peril. After a short time, it was ascertained that the Wvandank was not injured, which allayed the excitement and fears of the passengers on board. The boat then continued her course, she knew not whither, but with the good inten tion of going into her dock at Whitehall. In a short time another shock was experienced, and the confusion of the former collision renewed. After examination, however, it was found that the boat had run into the end of the wharf of the Staten Island Wry. Tho passengers, glad to put an end to their adventures by water, jumped a she re on the wharf, not less delighted thsn were Colum bus and his followers when they stepped upon San Salva dor. The Wyandank. this time was slightly damaged. After some further diflicultv she was taken into her own siip. att?r an abfence of an hour and a half, on her triii t'- Brooklyn. "lhe ferryboat Transit, leaving the slip at the foot of Atlantic s'reet. about half-past six o'clock A. M., nar rowly escaped running into a bark anchored near the Brooklyn shore. On approaching the New York side, owing to the strong current setting up the East river, she ran wiih great force into a fore and aft schooner lying at the end of pier No. 8, carrving awav the scho? ner's bulwarks, fore rigging, cat heads, 4c.. on the starboard side. The passengers on the Transit, among whom were meny women. were greatly terri tied. After ?cine delay she succeeded in working into the ferry slip at the foot of Wall street, where her passengers landed. Her proper slip is at the foot of Whitehall street, about four or five hundred yards below. The fog was so dense at the time of this occurrence that it was impossible to distinguish objects three yards distant from the boat. The Sts'en Island ferry boats were compelled to omit macv of their usual morning trips, and some of the boats < 1 1 hi- feiry were hours in the trip from the Quarantine. The Fulton ferry boat Gowanus, about twelve o'clock, in making the trip to Brooklyn, ran against the end of the lower pier, breaking the string piece of the dock. ] stove hi r rudder, and burst a portion of her deck. The fort>- of '.lie concussion was so great that a number of 'hehitses on hoard the lioat were thrown down. She had about six hundred passengers, the most of whom were landed at the dock, and the vessel was afterwards warped into the slip. Only oi, e loat was run on the Catharine street and Gouvemecr -treet ferries, and only one or two slight ac cident* occurred. The Roosevelt slin ferry boats made only two trips dur ing the forenoon. snd even those at great hazard. The Peck slip and Williamsburg ferry was not in opera tion during the thickest of the fog. the boats all going to the Grand street ferry. No vessels ventured up the bay from the Hook daring the forenoon. Steam whistles and fog bells were of great service, and were called Into requisition as long as the fog lasted. On tie North river we have not heard of any accidents. < 'wing to sea room they were avoided. The ferry boats, howe-. or. were much delayed in making their trips. A tout ore o'clock in the afternoon the mist gradually grew lighter. and finally entirely disappeared. Ouring the ljtter part of the day the skies threatened rain, and early in the evening a few drops made umbrellas necessa ries. This soon -topped, and till a late hpur st night n.v lure appeared to be in doubt whether it was best to rain or not. During tho entire day the weather was quite warm, and .is soon as the present storm is over we may lock for a Song spell of fine weather. So gay those who are jtidces upon this subject. The -tenmboets Worcester and State of Maine, with the East< i n mail, did not arrive until half past 4 o'clock, P. M.. they having been detained by the fog. Orvri m Hot sn Chance- ? DEATHS IN THE MINISTRY. We learn from the Jackson (Misa.) flag of tht Union , ! that the Rev. Joshua T. Russell. of the Baptist Church, died in that city on Monday, the Gth inst. The circum stances attending the (tenth of this servant of God were of a peculiar and solemn nature. The Flan, of the 10th, says: He was present at the meeting of the Jackson Bible Society, held on Monday evening last, in the Pres byterian Church. He was "unusually animated as he walked to the church in company with the Key. Mr. Shields, agent of the American Bible Society, s|>oke of the deep interest he felt in the cause, and remarked that if his health shonld permit, he desired to deliver a series of lectures in thil city on the subject. He opened the meet ing with prayer, manifesting great earnestness of feeling. After singing and prayer, Chancellor Scott, President of the Bible Society, made a few remarks on the beneficial in fluence which the operations of the society had already accomplished in Mississippi, and made a powerful appeal to the friends of the cause to aid in carrying out its glo rious objects. In the course of the evening, Mr. Russell spoke tu the following resolution. ? Resolved, That the Bible is a tried book, and that its circulation tft-ougli the agency of the American Bible Society ? catholic in its spirit and aim ? merits the high est confidence and the warmest support of the Christian public. All his powers seemed to be awakened in this ellort. He sketched briefly the agency by which the holy Scrip tures had been first given to man, how they hail been, transmitted through successive generations, and the means by which they have recently been so wonderfully diffused. He dwelt on the fact that the Bible was a tried book; he said " millions now around the throne of God, singing the song of Moses and the Lamb, had been saved by the blessed influence of this book." While he uttered this sentiment, he looked up, as if he had a vision of what he described: he then paused a moment, and said: l,I have done." These were his last words. He sat down, but sank immediately into apoplexy, from which the skill of experienced physicians could not arouse him. He breathed his last at 'J o'clock T. M. next day, at the residence of his son. E. I'. Russell. The Rev. I.eonR,rd Anson, of Hlery. Chautau |Ue coun ty. pastor of the lioplist church, died Marcii 7, at the age : of 6l?. On the evening of the same day. An unfortunate affray took place in Van Brunt street on Friday evening, which has since resulted in the death of one of the parties therein engaged. It appears that a y< uiik Irishman nnmcd Monaghan. had b"en invited to attend a party at the boarding house kept by a nian named Moran. in Van Brunt sucet. near Sullivan, which he declined to attend, and informed his sister that if any one called for him to tell him he had none to bed in con sequence of illness. He accordingly retired, and at>out 16 o'clock two of his friends from New York called, and proceeding to his room, persuaded himtosccompany them to Koran'*. He went, an I they appeared to have enjoyed i a very focd time up to about three o'clock, when the party broke up. and Monsghan accompanied his two friends towards the ferry on their way homeward. When arriving opposite the lumhc% yard of Dccker * Co.. in Van Brunt street, an altercation occurred between the three friends snrf a private watchman named Patrick ' K< helcr. in the course of which blows wore exchange 1, and the watchman raised his club and struck Monaghan oo the head, fracturing his skull.
