Th* K*w York Light Guard, Captain Vlnoent, gav* a public ball at tka Academy of Moaic on Monday night. Thu coipi ha* heretofore given tt? ioiriei in the dining room of th* Alitor House, at tan dollara a ticket? a rather exclusive price. Th* present affair wa* intend ed to be more democratic and more profitable. Both theM condition! were fulfilled to a certain extent. Three thousand Mix hundred ticket* were iiaued at two dol lar* each, and it i? atated that one member of the oorpx oold on* thousand. Oar reporter* hare farther been informed that about twentyflve hundred tiekeu were ?old, which would make the groaa receipt* Ave thousand dollani. Theexpenae* amounted to about fifteen hun dred dollara. which would leave a balance of over three thouaand for the monumautal fund of the company, to which fund the proceoda are to be applied. The ball was emphatically a crushing aflalr. Th* Academy ??' arranged for the occasion in precisely th* iame style a* for tne Firemen's Ball, the parquette being Hooted over. There were no decoration*. Th* mode ? a quadrille and a military band, about one hun ted piece* ? wa* furnished by the brother* Dodwortli. The military muaiciana were in uniform, and were con tucted by a gentleman who marked the time for them with a baton. It seemed odd. From 11 till 1 o'clock llie floor wa # crowded, and ther* were, probably, four ihou.and men, women and children, indulging in the unmtemeats of th* "gay and festive ac*M." Then* amusements consisted In part of dancing in vary close quarters, of being jostled and elbowed by everybody, or of being seined by some yonng man with a red ribbon, who felt the dignity of hi* poaition a* a member of the rimmittee, and prevented one from going to the only piac* that cne desired to go just at that moment. Much of the confusion and discomfort at thl* ball might bav* been prevented by care and attention on the part of the committee. The astembly wa- a " popular " one, and Included delegate* from all strata* of society. The military men came out strung? the uniform* of muny city regimen ta appeared on the floor? and half a dozen tigers (tame) from Boston, attracted a great deal of attention. Lieut. W. W. C'app, of the Boston I.lght Infantry, represented the officers of the famous Beaton regiment. The arrangements for inpper were very bad. It was given in the mloc-n in the basement, (where the Open urtist.i lately held their indignation meeting ) It wa) difficult to get a placo at a table, and itill more difficult to yet anything to eat after that. At about i o'clock the monotony of the supper business was diversified by a sharp skirmish in a saloon adjiiaent to the supper room. Matter* wore so mixed up that it was difficult to gain the particulars of thl* spirited little affair ; but it appears that a difference of opinion about a pecuniary matter bad arisen between a specimen of Young America and an excitable person whose "parent* were not born on the soil" ? a German or Frenchman. Young America assaulted his foreign opponent, and there was a " rally.1' " First blood " for Young America, who was last seen going oat of the Irving pluoe door, under tl>? affectionate care or a pol ceman. The affair wa* very slicrt, and its sadden termination dlugustedoae young gent.'eman, who evidently took a warm Intereat in T be field sport* of New York, as he said "it was the only bit of fun is th* whole ball " The la*t two hour* of the ball were veiy stormy in th* lobbies and aaloons. Order and decorum, however, reigned on the floor, aa far.a* we saw. At tkree o'clock there were only a lew desperate dancers remaining ? satiety bad succeeded pleasure and excitement ? soon after the last polka was polked? the last ludy wan shawled ?the last carriage rolled away with it* tirtd burton ? and th* Light Guard ball wa* over, it wa* a success, because it answered the purpose of the corps *ml netted a large sum of aaoney for a worthy ob ject ; but there were a great many dtsagree?ble matters connected with it. We are of opinion that no liquor* should be sold nt a bar within th* bailding where a pul>" lie ball 1* held. It is generally of th* worst sort, and nearly all the rows, fights, and *o forth, which have dis graced the public ball* of thi* city, to *uch a degree that thousands of ladles refuse to attend them, may be traced directly to tin* cause. Tlx German Opera. "Uer Freirrh it/" was given last nlglit to a very full hous?. The opera was not well put upon the stage, and the performance, a* a whole, wa- not above mediocrity, but the audience was in the best of humors, and forgave little errorii In consideration of the fact that they were beating the ch'f tl'otuvre of Carl Von Weber, renCersd in the master's language. The Agath* of the night, Miss C. Lehmsun, has a full, freeb, high soprano voice, and rendered her tniisic correctly and expree.dvely. If we say, iu addition to thlr, that M'me Siedenberg played Anncaen with a great real of vivacity, and sung her opening air in a piquant and sprightly manner, and that the orche-tra wan good and correct, as far as it went, the merits of the performance will be summed up. The performance , however, seamed highly satisfac tory to the audience, which was composed of the 'r.lite of (lerrann society in New York, and large delegations from the "rest of mankind." The German opera, thu* far, at Niblo'a, ha* bean successful, and it would be more so. if the troupe was strengthened by the engage ment of artist- of ability. Flotcw's "Martha'' will b? given on 'Ihur*day. Pergonal Intelligent*'. AH1HVAL3. A i tbo Irving Hi ujc? Hon R T Conrad, Ma;, or of Hliila dalpbia; Hon U C .V 11: Gen E A Llliott, Clinton, Ct; (Jon ?
