The great ship, or Great Eastern, as she is some
times called, projected by the eminent engineer Mr.
Unincl, the father of transatlantic steam navigation,
although bunding in the midst of tin- largest collec
tion of seafaring people in the world, stands a
wonder and a puzzle to them all. And, indeed
the moment you are inside the works of Scott!
Russell A Co., at Mill wall, you feel the reason of
the strange eye wi'h which the maritime popula
tion view the monste r which is slowly gnwing

itself, hut the porti in of the new town immediately
in its neighborhood. t\ here arc the merry ahip
carpepteiv, caulking away with monotonous, dead
sounding blows ? Where are the artizans chipping
with their adzes, rearing up one after another hugs
ribs, and laying the massive keel? Whore are the
bright augers gleaming in the sun, as sturdy arms
woik out 1'he liolt holes ? None of these old accus
tomed sights and sounds of ship building are to be
found ; but in their place wc see the arm of steam,
mightier than that ol Tbor, wielding nomo iron Rhalt
ug as " tlie mast of some huge udoiiral," or punch
ing inch plates of iron as quickly and as noiselessly
as a lady punches card board for a fancy fair orna
ment. .Steel, urged by the same potent master, is
seen showing its mastery over iron as the huga
lathes revolve, or the planing machine pursues
steadily its resistless course, whilst, in place of the
shavings ot the carpenter, long ringlets of dull grey
metal cumber the ground. The ship carpenter in
transmuted into a brawny smith, and the civil eniri*
nccr takes the place ot the marine architect A
closer inspection of this Leviathan vessel shows ua
how completely the employment of a new material
has necessitated new ideas with respect to construc
tion. She runs along, or rather will- for she is not
yet quite up in frame?some seven hundred
teet; those portious of her yet unfinished at
stem and stern show her partitions or bulk
heads running neaily sixty feet in heght, tuul stand
ing just sixty feet apart. If we examine the outer
walls ot these huge partitions, we see at once that
the ship has no ribs springing from a keei or back
bone?none of the ordinary framework, by which
her bulging sides are maintained in their places
but, on closer inspection, it is found that she has a
system ot ribs or webs, longitudinal instead of trans
verse. innning from stem to stern of the ship, up to
; eight feet above her dtep water line; and riveted on
each side ol the>c t irty-two we' s or ribs, which
are again subdivided at convenient lengths, are
| plates ol iron three quarters of an inch in thickness
forming a double skin to the ship, or a dermis and
epidermis, llius her framework forms a system of
ceJJtf, which* Jike the Monai tub?, combines the mini
mum of weight with the maximum of strength. A
glance at the transverse midship section will show
at or.ee this portion of her structure. Hitherto i
has been the piaciice to build iron ships in exactly
the same if (inner as regards framework as wooden
ones; that is. the strength of the sides lias been
made gradually to lighten towuids the deck which
being of wood, can otter but slight resisting powet.
Thus iron ships of the old method of con-TtAictiin
are peculiarly liable to break their backs upon the
application of force, either to their two ends or t?
the centre of their keels, just, in short, as a tube
would be easily broken, one side of which was
made much stronger than the other. The JJirken
heod iron troop-ship was a melancholy instance of
Hub unscientific method of construction; for it will
be remembered that immediately Hhe struck, har
wooden deck doubled up and snapped in two as a
stick would snap across the knee, white stem and
stern mired for a moment high in the air, and then
went down like stones Into the deep,
As you stand watching the process of building
up this double skin, or framework of the ship, the
question immediately strikes the mind, how arc these
unyielding plates of inch iron made to accommodate
themselves to hei lines, which are seen to run aa
finely lore and att as those of a Thames wager boat?
How are Lbe innumerable curves which die away into
each other to lie produced by any aggregation of
rtctilraear pieces of fiat boilerplate? I u ordinary
wooden ships, the planking, by its elasticity, allows
itself to be modelled to the ribs; but here there are
no ribs, in the true sense of the word, and 'he firm
of the vessel must depend upon the inclination given
to each separate piece of iron before the fastening
process Is commenced. And such, in fact, is the case.
Every individual plate, before being fixed in
its proper position, was the subject of a
separate study to the engineer. Of the ten
thousand, or thereabout, that compose the
framework of the ship, only a tew situated in the
lnubhip section arc alike either in size or in curve.
For each a model in wood, or "template," as it is
technically called, had originally to be made, and
by these patterns the plates were cut into tneir re
quired slnipiH bv the huge rteam shears, in exactly
the same manner us the tailor i uts out the various
portions of a garment. The "list," or inclination to
be given to each plate, is the next process to begone
through; and this is produced by passing it through
n sy tern ot rollers, which can be so reversed in their
action, and so adjusted, as to give it auv required
curve. 1 he "template, studded with holes around
its margin, is then fitted to it. and a boy with a
stick dipped in while lead rrurks through them the
place* upon the iron whore (be rivet holes are to be
punched; when this last process is completed, the
piste is lettered with two or three separate letters
indicating the precise place it lias to take in the
ship, 7 bus the hull is first carefully thought out in
detail, acd is then regularly and mechanically put

The process of fastening the plates affords anoth
er curious contrast to the old method of bolting cm
p oyed by the ship carpenters. The holes in the
l'hues to be held together being brought in exact
apposition, Volts at u white heat arc one by one

that condition bv a group of three men,
one the upholder, who holds the bolt in its position
by niacing a hammer against its head on the inside
ot the ship, whilst two sturdy Vulcans, with n'ter
nste lib ws. produce the rivet head on the other. The
boltsI contract in cooling, and draw the plates
together with the force ot a vice, and hold them m
tor eve r afterwards. The rapidity with which this
process is performed strikes the spectator with
astonishment. A set of time men, and a boy to
i lii vel the hot bolts out of 'Ire furnace, will in the
course ot a day close up four hundred rivets; and
speed in the process is requisite, when we remember
that before the ship can swim three million of them
must be made secure.
If we dainlier up the ladders which lead to her
deck. *<irc 60 feet above the ground, we perceive
that he r interior presents fully as strange a constraint
to other vessels as the construction of tier hall does

number of sub-cornpartmeuts beneath the lowest
deck, devoted to the boiler rooms, engine rooms, ooal
and cargo, Ac ; whilst some 40 or Co feet of her stem
and stern are rendered almost as rigid as so much solid
iron by being divided by iron decks Irom bulwark
to keel. Her upper deck is double, and is also com
posed of a system of sells formed by plates and
