The Woodman (W. A CAKU. Hie publication of Mr. Wooduuiu'u card hu presented an appropriate occasion for a statement to the public ou tny part which I Lave long desired to make, 111 order that I might refute the innumerable calumnies that have been promulgated in reference to lite m> t ailed il New York. Hotel Scandal." My acquaintance with Mm. Woodman be Kan in Paris, in October, My constant visits and at tentiorm to her prior to the 16th of August lust hod always been not alone countenanced by, but scoininuly agreeable to Mr. W. After an absence of about a year Mr. W. re turned to l"aris on the ii;id of July, 1 H56, and during hi.; may I wait always u wolcomo guest at his apartments, and ?was constantly invito by him to join bis family in tho visit#, excursions and amusements which make up tho or dinary lifo of strangers in that gay capital. They left I'arui for the United Platen ou the 28th of August I sailed from Southampton on my return to America on tho 12th .of tho following month, consequently could not jMMsihly have managed, as Hated in tho IHbunr, October 7 , "to eutrap Mrs. W. into h correspondence which pot into my hand." a aeries? of letteni compromising her." On bit return to New York, in October, lHf.5, tho rela tion* between Mr. and Mrs. W. and myself continued; there wu no Becrcsy about them for none was required. In November, 1855, the Woodmans left New York for the South. In January, isftft, I went to New Orleans, and re mained until May; while thoro 1 lodged in tho same notel, fiat next them at table, was a constant visitor in their apartment*?, with the full knowledge and consent of Mr. W. , and so far from ever liaviug the slightest caus? to imagine my relations to his family objectionable to him, I had every reason to supjiose quit* the contrary. In August, Mr. and Mrs. W. came North. I visited th.'m, a* before, and accompanied them by invitation to Newport. That year Mr. and Mrs. Woodman went South iu October. I Joined them in New Orleans iu February, 1857, and re mained until April, as usual, at the same leHel. On the 31st of May last, having occasion to visit Washington, ou my way there I stopped in Philadelphia, at the Oirard House, where Mr. nud Mrs. Woodman had been staying. I called upon Mrs. Woodman then, as well as upon my way buck from Washington to New York. On 15th August last I v united Mrs. W. at the New York Hotel and was received most kindly. There were two other persons in Mrs. W.'s rooms at the time ? Mr. W.'s nephew and another ? both of whom Htioti left. In about an hour and a half after their de|>arture some one knocked at Mrs. W. 'a parlor door, and upon its being opened Mr. W. rushfd in and handled Mr*. Woodman very roughly, bo much so that she screamed; and he, with Bowie Unite and revolver in hand, siroro that be would kill either Mrs. W. or myself. Anxious to avoid a scene and the talk which might ensue if Mrs. W's. outcries ?continued, I shoved Mr. W. aside, as he says, and lelt without being shot or even shot at. As toon as practica ble Mr. W. followed me; but as thero were aa yet no spec tators, he has only to blame himself and his foolish pub licatioua for the sraudal which ensued. Leaving the hotel I returned to my homo, from which, by the by (notwith standing all that ha* been said to the contrary), I have not been absent an entiro day sinco. I cxpcctou, of courso, |o bear from Mr W,( but wa<j disappointed. Ob to IWi of AufiUst Mr. Woodman, accompanied by ^Mr. C. !? Thomas (Mrs. W.'s brother), left town for 1'hila delphia ? (toe former to ransack Mrs. W.'s trunks and ap propriate their contents, even to her clothing, which h*.l been loft in Philadelphia ? the latter gentleman to escort some Ladies on to Virginia. Upon Mr. W.'s return to this city, be requited a gentleman in whom ho thought proper to confide, without having had any previous acquainUbca ?with him, to call on mo and endeavor to persuade me to give up Mrs. W.'s letters. Mr. Woodman stated to this gentleman that Mr. C. L. Thomas suspected something was wrong before going away , but that he (Mr. W.) had al lowed Mr. Thomas to leave town witho'U informing him of what had occurred. In the course of the day the gentleman with whom Mr. W. had conferred called upon me, conveyed Mr. W.'s wishes, and was authorized by me to state that no letters from Mrs. W. <o me were in existence. My reason for saying so waa that Mr. W. , as 1 was iuformed from tho samo wished the letters to aid bim iu obtaining a divorce On the 21st and 22d of August I received two bote* from Mr- Woodman, stating that she was closely oenflned, and that it would be impossible to describe Mr. W.'s unkindness and cruelty to her, and informing me that Mr. W. was willing to unito with hor in proceeding* /or a divorce ill would marry her. I answered both these note? immediately, offering to do everything asked. Soon after this I was told, by the gentleman already al luded to, that Mr. W. knew of these two last notes being written to me by Mrs. W.; and thus perceiving the object be bad in view in favoring the plan suggested in them, I readily understood why my answers never reached Mrs. W 's hands Tho atlldavit attributed to Mrs. Woodman, recently published, was gotten up on the 1st September, while Mr. Woodman was constantly with Mr*. W. at No. 1M Raul Rlghtoenth street, driving out with her, and so Torth On the 4th of .September Mr. Woodman called oa a near relative of mine, gave him a full history of the New York Hotel attair, and left the famous affidavit with bim to read. Mr. Wooilman called again ou the 7tk to procure it, and, after a long conversation. In which the whole subject was talked over, left, express iug himaelf very much gratllled with the Iu torrlew He offered to destroy the "affidavit'' if Mr*. W.'* letters were given up to him, and waj again given to understand that tho letters were no longer in existence. Agroeably with hut requet-t he was then tendere<l by my relative an interview with me, which Mr. W. declined, un leas it could take place in the presence of a third party, apprehending, as he said, a difficulty. I may as well ?tato here that Mr. Woodmau and myself met frequently In tho city subsequent to the rrnconlnr at tlin New York Hotel, and that ho has occasion to remember what passed at our lart meeting, which took plaee at tho eu trance of the St. Nicholas Hotel on the nth of October, tho day be finally left tor tho South. The following day. tho 7th, a false and scandalous article, emanating from Wood man, furnlthed from the office of the Owrrirr lies Khilt I'nit, appeared in the Iril/une, from which the following is an extract ? "No one will be astonished to learn that she who has been the victim should be to day in a house where health and affected reason are eared for together.'' On the 23d of October I re iWvml Mr*. Flushing, such arrangement* were made by me ,v> would have enabled Mr*. Woodman to proceed on her way home to her parent* on that very day , with a female attendant, and under circumstances precluding the pot-Mibility of my beiug alone with her for an instant. I have here given a* briefly at possible a truthful narrative of the origin, progress and termination of my lalerctiurse with the Woodman*. Th.it It was characterised by much that won imprudent u only to ootife?i* what is obvious to every one , but it must he equally apparent tliat I wan allowed by Mr W to believe Uihi my altitude was md misumlei l>y htm lie was a man of bu.*inem? thought of nothing else ? cared for nothing else HI* wife wa? gay . young, and fund of society All the day and half the night he .spent in his store Without children, she wm lonesome In her drawing room, and he encouraged me to nuppxe, as I al ways believed, thst It was entirely agreeable to him that I should IMS* a great deal of my time in the soc iety of his wife ? thus enabling him to devote himself entirely to ha alTairs, anil yet -|?re his wife the mnu i of a cheerless home This i*, no doubt, all very wrong, and so far as it is so, I sm willing to boar without a murmur the ccnsiiro of the world. And this is th" extent of my offence down to the dmoHfmrnt at the New York Hotel But Mr. Wooil man's lawyer and friends have since endeavored to prejudice me iti the e.-timaisui of society by a series of talse arcn*atlor?, *s destitute of truth *? they are often- | slve If Mr Woislman had taken my life on the eventful day In August, every l>ody would have *ai<l it was Justly forfeited to him. hut he has chosen rather to act the part of ? poltroon, aiming epithets at me instead of bullets, disgracing himself .is well as his wife, nnd wounding tho feeBnir* ot her kindred as well uiy own, bv the tlu me lea* invention oi a fabricated "affidavit." This ao c.illcd ?affidavit," as ?ti proved in Court, was never read to Mrs Woodman; it appeared by the testimony that she did not know its infamous contents, and that not a word of it was even written or dictated by her. I coufoM that it was withtfce ; deepest reluctance I did ho; but the ntcwitv was forced upon ma by Mr W.'s lawyers, who dtmaaM proof that tho proceedings for hor release were uudortakeu at her re quest, and in thin th?y were upheld by the Court I wis then forced to choose between abandoning the lady t" her late or reporting to her letter* for such evidence? now here else to be had ? as would secure li?r a hearing from a most ! reluctant Court. I authorised extracts frvtn them to bo read for this purpose and no other. But the lawyer* of Mr W. denied that the letters came from Mrs. Woodman, and de manded that they should be read in full, uvery word. To this , also, I waa forcod by the Court to yield , and so th? letter* were made public. And if any more proof were wanting of the absurd inventions of the oft man named at!l davit, it is to be found in these letters, written subsequent ly by Mrs. Woodman. Is it possible ? can il be conceived ? that any woman, even a Borgia, could , with a knowledge of its Infamous accusations, sign the affidavit of Sept. 1, and in the very next mouth address the same person in terms of confidence, esteem and supplication? Tie* suppo sition is, indeed, monsUous, when il in remembered that the affidavit waa preceded by similar letters on the 21st and 22d of August. If the space accorded to me would permit I could uiulti ply reasons awl accumulate facts almost without number to show tho Injustice which has been done me by recent publications in regard to this unfortunate att'air, whllnt complete silenco haa boon imposed upon me until the ap pearance of Mr. Woodman's card, for reasons which all will appreciate. It will not bo long, however, before the whole truth will be given to the public, under the sanction of a judicial investigation. For the Oompleto vindication of Mrs. Woodman aud for m v own exonern tion 1 am content to wait until then. For the prea< nt it Will suffice for nn' to show, as 1 have shown; lint ? That Mr W. knew all at-oiit my relation-" with his family dur ing the three years they continued, and never saw lit to object to them until it suited him to precipitate a scene at the hotel, m order to get rid of a wife whom he had loug taken pauiB to alienate Second ? That my efforts to ob tain her release from Sanford Hall, where he had sent her "for revenge," as he declared, were made at her urgent and repeat, d request, and that her sole wish and lUed purpose wus to go to her father's house. (Mr. Woodman would make people believe that his wife "refused," in the early |>art of September, to go home with her bro ther, and yet that she freely consented to be immured in a private madhouse, two thousand mile.* away from her kindred.) Third? Tliat the use of her letters was forced upon me for her own sako, and was unavoidable. Fourth ? That the statement put forth by Mr. Woodman as emanating from his wife, under the solemn form of an aflldav it, is a base fraud upon the public, a calumny upon mo, degrading only those ? the malignant cliout :uid tho convenient at torney ? who procuied it to be published. Mr. Woodman's "Card"' terminates lUe a piece of fire works ? in a sentence full of gunjwwdor. The railroad bond and hank hhare market was dull, hut the few transactions were at yesterday's pricts. In Home of the leading fancies of the day the decline was marked: New York Cen tral fell 1} percent; Cleveland and Toledo, 2; Illi nois Central, 1; Cumberland Coal, 14; while a few seemed to command even better prices than yester day, as Galena and Chicago, which sold at 81; Chi cago and Rock Island at 82, Reading at 47, See. Erie fell off 14 per cent; Michigan Southern, 1; LaCroaae, 4; Milwaukie and Mississippi, 1, and the other stocks of the name grade in proportion. At the second board but little business was done, at rather better prices. New York Central rose Reading, 4; Illinois Central, 1; Cleveland and To ledo,!^; Galena and Chicago, 1; Michigan South ern , J . There were bnt few Bales of State stocks or railroad bonds; those which took place were at the morning's prices. Alter the second board a decided improvement was established. There were sales of New York Central at 79$ , Erie at 17 J, Cumberland at 114, Toledo at 42, Reading at 48}, Michigan Southern at 22, Chicago and Rock Island at 62}, with a consider able demand unsupplied. Money continues to be abundant. Loans were effected to-day at live per cent, and even at this rate the supply of money exceeded the demand. It is tho prevailing opinion among financial authorities that the tendency of the money market is rather toward cheaper than toward dearer money, and that in the course of the next thirty dap we may see it still more of a drug than it is. As a general rale the market evinces remarkable steadiness after the unusual rise we have witnessed during the past month; and this, together with the unbounded evidence wo have of the resources of the country and of the general stability of the leading branches of trade and industry, strengthens the belief Jbat we are on the eve of a remarkable period of flRtion. The pnblic are apt ? lightly or wr^ty?to regard tfie stock board as an index to the commerce and finance of the country, and certainly, judging from present appearances, from the absence of any jvell marked bear interest, from the probable In create Of' revenue to accrue to the railroads from the closing of th$ canals, and from the astoninhing plen tifulness of money, it would appear likely that that index would reveal a gradual but steady improve ment during the next few weeks.
