Our returns show that while three-fourths, if not more, of the manufacturing establishments are kept in operation, not more than one tenth ol them work full time, or do an ordinary day's work each day. What with reduced time mid reduced wages, those operatives who are kept in employment are receiv ing but about two thirds their former pay. ? Sunday, Nov. 22?6 P. M. The stock market closed yesterday with a decided upward tendency. In all the leading speculative storks the highest points ruled, and an active de mand existed from cash purchasers. The bull move ment thus far has been a vigorous one, and the party engaged have become too deeply involved to rebx a moment in their efforts to continue the inflation. With thousands upon thousand* of shares of stocks in hnnd, which they are able to carry, and with the alulity to cany a? many more, there is very little doubt but that a further expansion will be realized. The market is notlikely to be pressed with stock for sale without finding buyers, so long as the bull party continues able and willing to buy. But they must continue purchasers to continue the inflation and to keep the supply of stock from Increasing. This we look for, and have no doubt of the success of the movement, ho long am the absorption of stock goes on. The duration of this is the only point in ques tion. It will we fear be found much more difficult to sell than to buy, and the effect of a withdrawal of the present demand can be easily imagined. The expansion in prices haw already been to an un precedented extent for the same space of time, and it would be something extraordinary it some im portant reaction was uot very * -n realized. It wil be seen by the current quotations that prices for most of the leading railroad stocks have already touched points exceedingly dangerous, except for wild and reckless speculation. No prudent person can think of investing in these securities at these pricea.and those who have involved themselves as purt'hasent have done so for no other purpose than the hope of immediate profit. The principal opera tors on the bnli side entered the mark -t as pur chasers at high points. After they commenced operations for an inflation, the market rec ? led ten. fifteen and twenty per cent. The improvement since, with the vast purchases required upon every advance to sustain it aud to create further inflations, have not much benefitted the position of the promi nent speculators, and the probability is that aw the game now stands it has not been a very profitable one. The vital ini|?ortanre of the market touching higher points, and of an outside absorption, is there fore evident. The bnll party must receive aid from some outside source, or the burden will become too great for them to carry. Without such aid any fur ther expansion in market values will be .1 dangerous movement, for the higher points prices reach the lea* the probability of new buyers coming in and the greater the probability of an uncontrollable supply of stock coming into the street. In support ot the position of speculators for a rise, even npon present high prices, is the Tact that an easier money market has not been known in Wall street for years. The banks are free lenders on call at the rate of Ave and six per cent per annum, and the brokers can hypothecate their stocks with fa vorable margins to any amount. This gives ail the facilities required for the most extensive cornering combinations, and the bulls are disposed to avail themselves of this *up|iort to the fullest* exteut. Tlow It will carry them through remains to be uceii. We fear the result will not Is* so favorable or so com fortable as the process of inflation has been, and that many of the fine visions of profits will float iWay into thin air. This, however, is a matter that may ! not li^ developed for weeks; and in the meantime w.* ! must look to the position of outsiders, who are I holders to some exteut of the principal railroad i sto< k? operated in at the Stock Exchange. The proper point to realixo is to outside boUfers of fancy railroad stocks the most important question 1 for consideration. As a general thing, there are vt ry few holders of this class of stocks, beyond the 1 mits of the Stock Exchange who are not an\iwly 1'Hiking for an opportunity to sell when they can do 1 so without loss. With many that time has arrived, | and in many instances it has been improved. Every 1 advance approaches nearer and nearer the de ! sisrd figure with all holders, and it is safe 1 to calculate that every three or five per ; cent improvement in prices brings upon the , street thousands of shares of this c!a? of | HAcurtt-y. This unfavorable element the Ml spec" 1 ThTOf has to contend against, and the market has already lieeome so much inflated, that the point fir realising has already been, for so many h >ldcr? I resched. and the difficulty of clearing the market of > supplies of new stock must be very great. This is I not only likely to increase, but another and a still j greater difficulty is likely to arise. We allude to the | utter impossibility of finding new buyers at high prices. It has invariably been found a very easy matter to buy stocks, either for cash or on t redit, and it never has been a very difficult matter to pnt up \ prices upon large dally purchases to almost any point desired; bnt It has. In every instance within our ex perience. been the most difficult thing In the world to realise, to find buyers at high prices, or to get rid, at anything like cost, of the thousands upon thousands of share- accumulated during the process of inflation. This has in all cases been the cause of the break down in every combination, aud of the se rious losses that follow. It strikes us that the hull stock spccolatvm ?f Wftll street wq about gn tered upon thin, the last phase of tbe movement, and that it will terminate as all others have before. If it does not, it will bo tue only exception v> ithLi our re collection. The steamship Atlantic at this port from Liver pool brings lis four days later news. The advice.! in a financial and commercial point of view are highly important. The Bank of Entfand has rained tho rate of interest to ten per cent. The Bank of Fran-e lift" advanced the rate of i11tere.1t to eight per cent ? a point higher than ever before reached. These events, In connection with numerous heavy failures, produced quite a panic in financial ctrclun. Tiie sus pension of Dennistoun, Wood ft, Co., with liabilities amounting to ten millions of dollars, created the greatest sensation. The failure of the Western Bank cf Scotland is also announced. This bank has one hundred branches, and is said to be largely connect ed with t he A merican trade. Tbe suspension of this bank caused a run upon two other bank*. A large amount of specie had been despatched by the Bank of England to meet the demand. It was the belief in Loudon that the rise in tho rate of interest would prevent any profit on the exportation of gold to the United State*. The Atlantic brings $127,929 in specie. The cotton market was very much de pressed, and a decline of one cent a pound is report ed. It follows, of course, that a very limited amount of business was transacted at the decline. Bread stuff were lower, and the demand not at all active. With such a rapid advance In the rute of interest, and with such large failures, bo ruinous to confidence, it must be expected that the markets for our staple exports and for merchandise generally will be se riously depressed. The failure of Dennistoun, Wood j & Co. must fall, wo fear, with fatal effect upon many houses in this and other cities of the Union. An ex change drawers they ranked next to Brown, Brothers k Co., and a very large amount of their bills must be afloat. The extent of their liabilities shows this. This failure must fill the mn.ds of many houses here engaged in tbe import trade with apprehension, and create great anxiety regarding future arrivals from Liverpool. The advance reported in consols of one per cent is not at all strange under existing circum* stances. The general distrust in commercial affairs would naturally turn the attention of capitalists to government sccuritiea -hence the improvement in prices for consols. The exportat in of specie from this port during the past week has been us follows : ? SjnrnKNTv i>?- Spkcik toom thk 1'ort of Vkw York. Since ; the last statement the receipts have been large, and we ,-hould not be surprised to see a report of t wenty- 1 one millions of dollars in specie at that time in the ' bank vaults. Such an accumulation cannot but be : very burdensome to the so\ eral banks, and must 11CI very largely to the wrong side of the profit and loss : r count. We do not sec what stand-) in the way of a general resumption of specie payments. We have accounts from all parts of tho country that the hanks of the different sections are only waiting for the banks ot' tuis city to resume. 1 The banks of all New Euglund are ready to , resume in twenty-four hours after those of this S city. The banks of Ohio are ready, also thorn; of 1 Illinois and Missouri. In New Orleans a resumption has already taken place, and all things have worked favorably. The buaks throughout the country gene rally have now more specie in hand than at any 1 time previous to the suspension, and there is no out- 1 ride demand for It. Tbe only inLuence at work in ! opposition to the immediate resvmpMoi of tho banks of this city is the position of financial affa'rs on the other side of the Atlantic and the probable effect of a serious and wide spread revulsion over Great Britain and tbe Continent. The managers of our banking institutions may deem it the wisest policy to wait further developemeuts from the money mar kets of Europe before taking such an important > step, and that may be the safest course to pursue, j A few weeks will determine the probable movements of the Bank of England ai.d enable our financiers to form a more correct opinion regarding the future. 1 Bo far as the condition of the bankr themselves is concerned, there is no need for a mome nt's hesita- j tion. The specie reserve is so large that no fears ' can be entertained of a drainage for any purpose. All apprehension of a demand for exportation has long ~ir.ee passed away, and there Is very little ?] nibt bnt that we can, at the worst, retain our California remittances. The unction sales the present week liste been on a reduced scale, and generally at low rates; and with the exception of ono or two sal?v< of anme importance to come off next week, the season may be considered us having nearly reached its clr>. o, hastened, as usual, by the prosj>ect of the rifling of the canal*. There has been the pant season an over iiii|K>i1alion of shawls and scarfs, especially of the chenille claw. Notwithstanding th<* neavy offering at the auction houses, 9 considerable amount of stock must remain over. There luia bocn a great demand for all wool Saxony shawls, and the last sales made of good and desirable rtytea brought improved pi ice*. In silt* and fancy gomis the *uj> ply has hcen in excess of the demand, and a g??od deal of the *tock must go over. American staple cotton clotha have gained more strength, and hold ers lock forward with more confidence to the future, and believe that they have passed their lowest j mint, and that any considerable ekUCi ( lereafter must be for the better. Owing to the de . prension in the bu*ine*s of ready made clothing, ; woollen cloths suitable for manufacturing purpose* . were quite dull; and though th* hI^vIh ot deniable descriptions are not ex< e-??ive compared with ordi liaiy seasons, yet the trade ruled dull, and prices were supported with difficulty. Manufacturer*, in the past summer, (when winter stocks are usually made uu.) not anticipating a panic in the autumn, overatocKed the market. The consequences have been that many of them bave been compelled to make forced sates at greatly red need prices, while rome few have been compelled to suspend. The change in the times has also affected the city tailors, who complain that their customers an- in too miuiy instances economizing by wr ring out old clothes in j stead of replenishing themselves with new. This com- ! plaint, how ever, is less common as the winter weather ; advances, and orders for new ontttts are becoming | more common, 'i'he city retail trade ha- improved the j present week, arid storekeepers have la-en well em | ployed, while jobbers have measureably ceased ? >tt? r- ? mg their stocks by retail at wholesale prices. There j has also appeared" more inquiry the present week for ? cotton piece goods for export, especially fur Mexico j and South America. The collections from the West, I though slow, continue to come iti rather more satis- 1 factorily, as the interior exchanges be come better ( regulated. The auction sales of the present week embraced a sale on the 18th inst. of a catalogue of about 1140 lots millinery goods, embracing ribbons; the latter were average, and sold low, while the more desirable lots of other articles wore sold at fair prices. O11 the 19th instant, a catalogue sale of 347 I its ot shsiwls was made which was well attended, but prices were low, though thry compared favorably with previous sales. On Friday Messrs. Van Wyck, Townsend A Warrens held a catalogue sale of lace goods, curtains and French embroideries, of the manufactiire of II Kuriz ler A Rheinei k, which comprised t>-0 lots, and on a credit of 4 months, for endorsed notes, payable in New York.
