which the engineers may arrive after reaching Qneenstcwn,in
ff(.ard to the practicability of the work. If it la
atceralned on oompirlng notes that the cable did not part
on boird the Agamemnon, but that the continuity was lost
hy the hrrakitg of that portion of the c inductor which
was submerged, and while It Uy on the bottom,
it is mere than probable that the enterprise
will be abandoned lor tbe preseot. An the vessels
were between two and three hundred miles apart when
the continuity was lost the second time, we are In perfect
igDorauce as to the eause, which must remain unexplained
until we hear from the engineers who have hat
charge of the work on the English ship. Oar only hope
at present Is, that they will be able to acoount for it in a
satisfactory manner, In which caae there la no doubt that
auciber attempt will be made, as we have still sutllctent
cable left to allow a surplus of about thirty per cent over
and above the distance between the two points of connection
in Ireland and Newfoundland.
It is mo it unfortunate that the Agamemnon was usable
to ictu'D again to the rendezvous, as she might have
done had she nad a sufficient supply of coal; bit she wan
to deep in the water when leaving Plymouth, that her
csptain considered it unsafe to carry more thaa four
hundred and fllty toss. Oar ship had eignt hundred and
fifty, which with moderate economy coatd be made to
last over thirty days. The only reason, therefore, why
we are obliged to go to Queens town in because of the
want of coal, and In slow of the splendid cable laying
weather we have lost, It Is cer anly a mauer of much
