Put?I have the honor to re;>ort that everything per
taining to the special service for which I am sent to thia
department, is in ft favorable condition. Tbo negroes are
wo king industriously. We have some fifteen thousand
aces of corn end cotton under cultivation. It looks

The people are contented and happy. When the new
crop is harvested thty will cease to be a burden upon
the government.

rage about five hundred thousand dollars worth of stamps
tn circulation. They nan issue one million of stamps
n day, the value of which Is about one hundred
thousand dollars. As the stamps are to pais from hand
to hani aa ourrsncy, they will of course become dls
figured, and, therefore, It Is thought necessary that
?oses new Instrument for cancelling them shall be used,
to the and that a strong Impression may be made upon
the face of the stamps. Puncturing has bean recom
mended, hut Is not well thought of, for the teas n that
letters frequently contain drafts and othar valnablea.
The stamps other than thoae that are In common use are
described as follows:?The five cant are eboeelate cotori

heod of Washington; the twelve cent black, with like

THE OVERLAND ROUTE TO THE PACIFIC.
Trips on the overland route are suspended f?r s few
days, to enable the ootnpany to transfer their stock, Av.i

be saved. It runs south of the old route via Bridger's
Pane to Fort Brldger. through a more level country,
where there is grass, water, ho. The company first ad
vised the Poet Office Department that it would take but s
