TUB BUSH FOB T03TA0B STAMPS.
The Postmaster at Philadelphia telegraphs tbo Pest
Oitlee Department that he wants more stamps, aa thers
ts s great rush for them. The Department baa on an ave
rage about five hundred thousand dollars worth of stamps
tn circulation. They nan issue one million of stamps
n day, the value of which Is about one hundred
thousand dollars. As the stamps are to pais from hand
to hani aa ourrsncy, they will of course become dls
figured, and, therefore, It Is thought necessary that
?oses new Instrument for cancelling them shall be used,
to the and that a strong Impression may be made upon
the face of the stamps. Puncturing has bean recom
mended, hut Is not well thought of, for the teas n that
letters frequently contain drafts and othar valnablea.
The stamps other than thoae that are In common use are
described as follows:?The five cant are eboeelate cotori
with tba head of Jeflhrgon; the ten oent, green, with the
heod of Washington; the twelve cent black, with like
bead; the twenty -four lilac, with same head; the thirty
yallow, with head of Franklin; the ninety blue, with po.
trait of Washington as a young genoral. The stamio
now in uae differ from the old ones la the fact that the
figures art in the upper corners.
