Major Allan Rutherford, as tho colonoi v. ad still at Wash

vancedon the field aud halted several times, so that it
was nearly eight o'clock beforo we came under tho lire of
the enemy. The moon had risen, and it was a bcautil'u'
night. The flro of the enemy's artillery was very heavy,
bat. as they did no', laivo our rac^e, most of their shells
went over our beads. We continued to adv.-:nco so as to
Hank their ptsitl"?. Tho shells going through the oil*
looked like blieotiiig stars. They made a frightful noise,
a jeilocl howl. We lost during this advance only
cue mau killed and two vvouudod. Tho other
reglmonts of our brigade sulfered m-int; our
regiment was lucky being on the right of
tin brigade. I had a very lueky escape, us o\er twenty
shells burst within fifty feet o me. 1 regard it as wonder
ful ihat I wus not hurt. We were under the tiro of their
batteries Irorn ei*ht o'clock until eleven o'clock. At that
hour orders wore received from General ilarisull' for our
regiment to advance to the simport of tvvo^of our bat
ter! s tlmt were shelling the ei emy. 'I he General said,
that he hatfteiecied our regiment tor this duly, as being
ono in which he huu perfect contldcnce. He als.) siiolie to

discovered the pickets of the enemy, and soon after two

men. A strong Hoc of skirmishers was thrown out. wb)

directions. The footmen kept In the wools, and lied by
Kaphlan station. The cavalry lied down the Oranje
Court House ronds.
I pursued them cautiously, fearing an ambuscade, to
'Yookod river, which bad swollen to such an ejttont that
my artillery could not cross. Part of the First Vermont
aid First Virginia cavalry swam the river, and continued
the pursuit to Robinson river, which was so full and tur
balent as to be extremely dangerous.
In tiie pursuit, a good many prisonets wounded in Satur
day's light were found ahftost abandoned. Major An
drews, Cbi#f or Artillery to General Jackson, was found
badly wounded at Crooked river, in charge of an assi-:taut
surgeon.
The flight of the enemy after Saturday'^ Sght was most
precipitate, and in great confusion. Uis ojd camp was
rrewn with dead mon, horses and arms. His flag of
