FINANCIAL AMD COMMERCIAL.
Kkipay, July 19?6 P. M.
The money market is extremely easy; call loans
generally 0 per cent. Mercantile paper is a G
for the highest grades.
Gold was better again to-day, selling at 132a4
and 133 at the morning board. In the afternoon it
- was 131%, 132, 13'J^, closing at live P. M. at about
112%. Bills were stronger, selling up to llfi and
146%. The strength of gold and hills arose this
morning from silly doubts concerning the fall of
Vicksburg, which were caused by the non-publica
tion of General Grant's despatches. Gold will
probably tall to 120 when the tirst boat sails from
Cairo to Xcw Orleans.
The stock market opened very strongly
this morning, and prices were uniformly better
before the board. Harlem sold at 10G, South
ern old at 81, Erie at 95%. When the
board met there was some relaxation
iu rates. Harlem fell off 3 per cent, Erie
Southern 1%; Pittsburg was steady at last even
ing's pricc; Illinois Central was a fraction lower;
l'acilic Mail rose 1 Y% per cent and Prairie du Chien
3. Governments were dull and rather lower. Mis
souris also fell off % per cent. At the close of the
call the market was dull, and remained so at the
one P. M. board. Southern old fell % per cent
more. At the afternoon board the market was
generally strong. Erie rose %, Pittsburg %,
Harlem %, Pacific Mail 2%, Southern old <&c.,
&c. Hudson River sold at 179, cash and regular,
and 172, seller three days. The market at the
close was firm. The following were the closing
