QUE EDUCATIONAL IH8TITUTI0HS. I'atMi Collate CommiMemtBt, ODB 8CHINBCTADT COKRBSPONVINCB. Snumor^DT, N. T., July 23, 1803. Tbe commencement exercises of Union College are al ways interesting and profitable. They not only make the ho rs of monotony pass with employ uient, but tliey afford to those wbo have been tbe recipient* of former degrees tbe great privilege of again returning to Hie seat of their >111, a Mater. 8cheneciady la not much of a place either for beauty or anything eUe, but what little lire is derived from a visit there roust coin* from the associations which students make. The < lass day exercises of the cli.ss of 1863 took place on Monday last. The entire control of the oil cers, kc. , and all arrangements, was unner Mr Brailley Martin, who acquitted himself of bis tusk m<st admirably. Tu.e gentleman took no part In tbe literary exei oes of the day, bat showed bis taleut in the especial direction of Grand Marshal. The oration by Mr. James 0. Johnson, of Washington, D. C., waa a supjrb proof of the great abiilty of this jroiiog gentleman. He is a man of great talent, and will be the means of reluming great good to hleA Ima-Mater. Tbe poem by Mr. John Wright, of Wilmington, Pel , was not i nly a beautiful but a sublime production. Uis etlorts were crowned with success, and be roust compliment himself ob the merit with which but poem met al tbe bands of the auiheD.e. Ihe class address by Mr H. L. Bellinger wus in that gentleman's usual nappy mood, and was well rooaivod. Mr Blakely, as class historian, made many blunders, and did not come up to the usual talent of the class. Mr. 1 'en ton, tbe gentleman who wrote the first part, should have had the entire affair, and we should then have bad something at least of a literary taleut displayed. Tike contest tor tbe roses, the farewell to tbe college buildings, the smoking of the pipe of peace, and all the usual concomitants, were gone through with tbe greatest taste and dec rum, sad to tbe class oi '63 must the laurel be given of having initiated into regular lorm tbe least or a class day. In tbe nvenmg the Hon. Daniel Pougberlv addressed I the Senate of tbe College on tbe subject or ??War," and it wan an effort of ability and power. Tbe audieQce was quiet, and tbe silence of death seemed to hover over tbe scene while he so truthfully depicted tbe horrors of "grim visaged" war. Mr. Dougherty is u metnber?of tbe Philadelphia bar, and bis abiliti, s musi give biiu in thai city a wide and distinguished reputation. Kcv. Dr. Hickok, President of I'nion College, was beard to say that be had never heard the sub ect so ably and powerlully bandied Tue address by Kev. Kosweli 1). Hitchcock, of Mew York, beio.e tbe literary societies, was another bril liant example of tho ability of that distinguished divine. His reputation is world wide, we need say no mure. Tbe address before tbe l'hi Buia Kappa Society, on Wednes day evening, by Rev. Dr. Seelye, or Amherst College, was welt delivered, and evinced great depth and research. Tbe exercise* on commencement day l.egan at ten o'clock, in the ,-ecotid Reformed Do:cli church, tbe class having been chagrined al not being ablo to secure the First Reformed Dutch atter it bad tieeu so faithfully promised th' m. Next year it is to be hoped that they will go to Tweddlo Hall , Albany , it tliey cannot eerure at least a good sized church in which 10 boid their exercises. 'Ihe musical part ol these com meucemeuts deserves a word of notice, for a number of years the students have not a word to say is this matter, although they are Ibe principal sutler*?. Whether the blame lies with the Faculty or with the trustees of the church 1 know not. 1 should think, however, not with the latter, for on several occasions within tbe week tbey h <ve been banding aw.iy to an almost unlimited extent. It :s to be hoped that hereafter we shall have baud music in ?tead of operatic s.nging. It is more appropriate, aud eertulnly more in keeping with tbe occasion. But if we are compelled to have surging, Ac., 1 may saiely say that no one could more ably do It than Miss Uacketl, of Alba ny , assisted by Mr. J. K. I'errlng. Miss Hackelt in one or the loveliest of amateur singers, and is possessed of the ? ?veetett or voices. Her round, full notes; her exquisite vatlatiuu eudings, are sure signs of taleut, and saiely may it be -aid that there are many, many on the stage whose ability compared with that of Miss Hackelt is not a clrcum stance. Her excellent and artistic rendition or Venz;ino s ??Grande V also' need be cited but as a single example of Iter merit as an axtitU. The addressees by the yonng gen t etnen were far above the average, and someof tb -m ?hculd be published. The role of tbe Faculty in limiting all speeches to By* minutes la impeachable, and should fee corrected. Withe exercise* begin at nine o'olock and aMttnaa until flvo If necesaary; but let each gentleman have a farewell chance to show whether he be a man or a monkey, if Uie audience get tired tbey should move out and give plaoe to other*; bat anythlug rather than cramp tbe exercleee of tbe hour. The salutatory, in Latin, by Mr. Arbuakle, was good, lacking the fervor, however, of a spirited prod action. The Qreek oration, by Mr. K. C. Tain tor, waa most beautifully rendered, as the audience also thought, for they undoubtedly understood it al). the "Future of the Aster lean Repabiie," by J. T. McMil lan, was delivered la good style, and contained the true ting. "Individuality of Action," by George A. Beanie, wax a fin* production , and waa spoken in a true orator i oal maouer. "Lite 1'atlia.' by Mr. A. Kirkpatrick, waa one of tbe ablest of the day, and was received with ap plause. "Athens' legacy to tbe World," by Mr. C. G. Clarke, of Troy.N. V., was a grand oratorical attemi t ?ad success. Thi* gentleman , amid the shouts ot the au diurco, received the Blatchlord oratorical prize of a gold medal. Tbe second prixe, of a gold modal , was awarded to Mr James (j. Johnson, or Washington, f). C. , who da livered a well written and pleasing address on "The Com iug Day." The presentation of tbe medals to these gen tlemen pleased tbe class grestly, who showed by their applause that tbey .were given to the right poisons. The adurcaee* of a number more were good, but used not, per Lap*, be men tioned in tbls connection. Professor John Newman who* ha* had the chair of Latin at Ibis college for the part ten years, his resigned bis position to lake the president y of a lernale college at Poultney , Vei mont Of tbs ability or this distinguished divine nothing need be said lie is kuown to be one at the first IaIiu scholars in ihe country, and his lo s to luion College will be immense The very nam - of John Newman to any college must utve it a gresl p eslige, and we congratulate tbe people or Vermont ihat they aie about to have such a man at the bead or tli*ir first female college. 11 has nol beci. slated who lugea Promsor Newinrui s jrlhcc at Utiion College This is tho on<y change In tbe faculty for tbe year. Milk Come Froml? Why W? (on Id Not Get the Vnmml Supply? The Harlem Milk Depot and the Milk Carts, die. ? Among the annoyance* caused by the recent diFturbanceg was the stoppags of ,he ",ual 'upply ^ rhe icr vant girls , on tbe morning of Tuesday, July 14, the day after the commencement of the disturbances, would look at the clock as the hand* paired the hours of six, seven, eight, and even nine o'clock, and wonder "What could have bcrome or the milkman." Tbey would nib their eyes, and lock again at the timepiece, under the i lea that It was fast, or that perhaps they had accidentally rlfeu earlier than usual. Still the milkman came not. Break fast was announced, and yet his musical call wan sot to be heard m many of the streets. Thcrs was no milk to be bad In the city? not even "stumpta.l." What could be the cause? When the Oroton pipes burst, three years since the want oT water was greatly felt; but the cutting off of the sapply of the limpid element was not a greater domestic disaster than the loss of tbe milk. TH* <AVit OT THE STOWAGE. It appears that the excited erowd lore up the track of the Harlem Railroad, above and below the bridge, to pre vent troops from reaching the city. This action also pre vented the milk trains from reaching New York until after the track coord be again laid, nnd when the rolling stock, laden with milk cans, once more reached tbe milk depot, tbe aicilement around tbe vicinity was as remark able as It was strange. The milk carts rushed to get the milk , and tbe maids rosbed to catch tbe milk carta, and rnsny milkmen sold out tbeir stock o* that occasion even before they had proceeded two hundred yards from the depot. WIISSB DOSS TBS WUM COM* SSOWf This question was often ssksd during the time of tbe saareity, and to obtain as answer to it our reporter start ed off one morn teg out of town on the empty milk train. Py tbe word "empty" we mean that nothing but empty cans and such articles were aboard. Tbe locomotive soon took bim through Wwtc&ester, Putnam and Dutchess counties, and en to his destination near Klnderboog, where he rested until tbs milk train was ready to depart fur town. KIAR1 )OR TOW* ? nRHT MILS SI4TIO*. He started at afoul si* o'clock in the evening, and the first milk station on li a return was Chatham, better known as tbe "Four Corners," and there the train took up the irst supply , which was rather small. Tbe train was entirely special for milk freight, and , although it started with but few cars, before li reached town the number was far from being inconsiderable. Our reporter was then one hundred and thirty-one miles from tbe < ity Hail and over one hundred and twenty-seven from ihe mils depot Tbere are thirty-nine milk stations along tbe i hoe but on arcouLt ot irregularity ? ntmbert, arising ! from new stations !*ing trom time to time located at in termeddle points, I hath.im is known as No. 37. ?liuocto* ? nasi i.*koe npn.T.
