'houfbt they ^ would recognize him when that individual paid, "1 niust have a Judge of the Superior. Supremo and wcmoa l'leaa Court?L" Gentlemen, Mid tne speaker, this is fearful, thai one man should be permuted by a grovelling, an enslaved, a blind and a stolid people to declare that be mast own a Judge. Such a change bad taken place la the administration of Justice since he began the profession, that new, when a man entered bis (Mr. Brady's) ofltce with a bundle of papers and Rays, "here In as injunction granted to prevent me from carry tug on my regular business" (and Ibe very laat ease be tried was of that nature), he would not, as formerly, neglect to ?ek the name of the Judge who issued the injunction, but simply look at the merits of the case, but now ibe first question was, what Judge granted the inunction) and next, what Judge was to bear it; and when tbeee questions were answered la many cases be handed back the papers, saying, "My friend, lean be of no service to yon. Yea must employ such and such a man, and. employing him (between whom and the judge or the judge's partner, frieDd, associate, agent or huckster there exists a secret combination), yon have same ohnnce to maintain your rights in s court at Justice " That was no fancy picture, bat it was the language of sober and frightful reality. He voted against the constitution of the State of New York upon the ground that it established an elective judiciary ; and yet his objection to it was not that the nomination ot the judges wasl given to the t eople; for in a great majority of cases, unti recently, the people nominated good men. The danger was in the influences that begin to operate upon those Judges after they reach the bench, in view of being can didates for re-election. They are approached by men in (created in railroads and other things, and pledges are got from them in advance as to what their decisions will be upon those questions. The politicians of this city entertained the idea that a man was an animal who had a vote, and they were the persons to use that vote Tor their benefit. If the division of Tammany and Mozart is consummated, it would be a disgrace to the city of New York forever, and there would be two individuals m this community each of whom will own a judge, body and soal. If such a thing happened, he would want to emigrate, for be would uot havo the finger of reproach pointed at the citv of New York The solemn question which was to be determined by the people at the coming election was, whether tblesbamelul state of things shall or Rhnll not continue. In conclusion, Mr. Brady called upon them to shake of! tbo chains which bound them as elnvcs to these minions, and when the election would cloee they would be disenthralled forever. 8PXECH or UK, JOBN M'UON. Mr. JonN M<'kicon was the next speaker, and on pre senting himself he was greeted with three cheers. He told bis fellow democrats Uut the hall was entirely too mall for their little organization. It might do for Tammany and Mozart, but vmuM not do for their organization at all. ((Tioa of "No, sir.") He knew the trtclu of bin opponents;but he was determined to play out the game fairly and squarely. He knew that tbey had some of.the papers in their favor; 'but there were other papers la the city that tbey could not command?paper* having toe much integrity and independence, and who would tell the truth In ail things. The great assemblage before him teettied to the Intense feeling of the com unity with regard to the duty to be performed next Tuesday. He looked upon it ae an omen of auooeaa, aa sure as that election day wouM oome round on Tuesday next. The machinery of Tammany and Mozart was smashed beyond all question. <Cheers ) None ooaid entertain tbe idea of failure; thara was no such wont as fail with them. Tbey had right, and truth, and Justtoe, and, above all, the power of the people with them, and they muet succeed. (Applause.) (Popular government waa at tbe time undergoing a nsnera test.
