The money market is easy for call loans nt sevi n
per cent, with exceptional trans;.ctions at six.
The amount of loanable funds is in excess of the
demand, as the statement of the associated b:in!.s
lor the week clearly indicates. The deposits have
lucrease.tl $3,26#,052 since lust week, and the loans
t2,217.2 28, while the specie shows a reduction of
$1,240,243, and the circulation $3,615?G4n. The
augmentation in the deposit line is attributable
mainly to the return flow from the West and the
country generally, as rlso receipts from the army,
the disbursements of sutlers a< well a" officers and
men being just now greater than usual. The in
crease in the loan- falls Bhcrt of that of the depo
sits more than a million, showing the sluggish de
mand for money for speculative purposes on stock
collateral*, which is the only way in which some
choose to loan their capitul. And of the amount
loaned by the bank by far the larger portion is
in the form of government securities. The supply
of first class commercial pnper is small, and the
ordinary rate variub from eight to eleven per cent.
The demand for foreign exchange is not brisk,
as buyers are holding eft in expectation of a
