aoters (ana in tn? au ?tner persona folly agreed) , ana at the time of the coalition of the Open Board of Broke? with the present 8tock Ex change Mr. Brownell was the vice President of the Open board. INT*BTI*W WITH MR. BB0WV1LL. At length Mr. J. L. Brownell came in. He la a tali, rather slim gentleman, with a blonde, short beard, and a humane, open expression of counte nance. lie bears uo small resemblance to the well known pictures of llenry IV. of France. At lae time he looked very downcast and sad. "I should like," said the reporter, "to obtain for the Hkrald an exact statement of the fact* of jour failure." "And I am quite willing to give them," answered Mr. Brownell "I simply found to-day that 1 could not go on any longer, and then suspended." "riut the causes of the failure; what are they?" ?queried the reporter. "Were they in any way at tributable to the panic oi yesterday?" "om yes, to soim* extent of course. The move ment yesterday was totally unexpected to me, and I was not prepared for it." "JUad you any particular stock on which you lost heavily?" "No, no particular one ; I was generally loaded with all kinds of stocks? not lor my own account; I did not speculate ? but for the accounts of others. When the fall catue yesterday I was unprepared. Last night I had anticipated tliia, and 1 BNDBAVOKKU TO QET 8TRA10nT, but the men I went to were pretty hardly pushed ttiemselves and could do little or nothing lor me. Yon see, I have many customers who live at a great distance iro'n ticrc, and I either had no time to communicate with tlietu or they had not time to raise the money sufficient to lortify me. These customers' margins on investments were not sufficient to covcr the break. During the past lew weeks, when the stringency in the xuoney mar ket was so great, 1 hud to pay heavy ratos every now anu then to carry their stock through, so that when the panic came many of them had but very small maruius. since the 1st of March I have had t? pay out ?00,000 on interest for money loaned-on these stocks. From time to time my customers would rcuui me small sums to make up far their Interests on o.tus, but in the main they were not sufficient, and when the panic came I could not stand the impetus and had to sell out." "What will be the extent of your liabilities:1" "They will not be very large. My own liabilities in the street, I do not think, will loot up over $3,000. In fact I am sure they won't. When 1 saw what was coming 1 would not hazard any more in endeavor to cover myself, but immediately saw what 1 could d? in making settlements. In this way I arranged all my indebtedness in the street but the sum I have named. Those gentlemen you eee outside there are depositors; they have thus far shown me great courtesy and have not pressed me hard. 1 do not know as yet what my liabilities to them will be. But it will be all right I assure you. I AM WOUTn IIALF A MILI.IOV collars outside of mv business and can ultimately meet all engagements. The tiouble was that I ? could net realize upon what 1 own so suddenly. Had I been able to of course I should not have tailed." "Do you expect, then, to saon resume ?" ??Certainly. II 1 am not too hard pressed I shall proWably resume Inside ?f lour days. Just as soon as 1 can see how I really stand, if these gentlemen, my depesiters, will eugage nut to rush in upon nie directly 1 open my doors, I shall resume in four days and all will be right. This is only a temporary embarrassment, but one for which I deeply sorrow. To show y?u how I fought against this thing I can tell you that this morning 1 telegraphed for money to a banker who lives at a distance (1 need not say how lar), and wli? owes me $eo,ooo. I usked him to answer at once. 1 have received no answer. I suppose it's because the wires are down in consequence of the storm, for he is a man who would come to my aid and answer Immediately were he able. 1 don't know any other reason then the storm that prevents my getting an answer. Of course everybody In my circum stances says something like tills, and give ex cuses, but I assure you what I say Is perfectly true." Several of the creditors whom the reporter saw expressed entire contideuce In Mr. Brownell's ability to make his contracts g?od. ANOTHER INTERVIEW W1T0 MR. BARTOW. The reporter subsequently called upon Mr. Barlon, of the Htm of Barton A Allen, wnich failed on the day previous, to lenrn some further particu lars of the suspension. Mr. liarton was quite com municative and willing to be interrogated, lie said that bis liabilities would loot up to something between $250,000 and $3 K),ooo. They would not be under the one nor over the other. "Have you any prospects of resuming?" asked the reporter. "It all depends on how I am treated in the street. Brokers are not usually hard upon each other in such circumstances as these. My creditors knew very well that 1 did all I could to avert this, and besides all brokers are sa liable to a blow of the kind that I d*n't suppose they will make matters very hard. If they allow me to re siuic, ol course they have some hope of being paid, bat if they force me out of the street they know that the chances are as nothing; that they will never have the money 1 owe them, for a man who lias bocn l?ng in this business is not likely to suc ceed in un.v other. 1 have been seven years a member ol the Stock Exchange, but my partner. Mr. Allen, had only belonged to it for about three mouths. "Have you applied to Commodoro Vanderbllt tor any help ?" "He haa not slenifled any willingness to come to our support and lie has not been asked to do so." "Were the stocks you speculated ou all on your Own account?" "No. The real cause of the failure on our part to jncet our engagements was that we were heavily loaded with Union Pacific, and not on our own ac count. i'ray, remember that it was not on our own account. 1 don't want to say anything further on that point, however." "How late did you speculate for tbe Commo dore ?" "Dp to within a few days we have had an ac count for him. Hie story oi our incurring his dis pleasure by reason of speculating i* not quite true. He knew we speculated on our own account? at least he said so." "There is a great deal of sympathy for yon In the Street," said tlie reporter, about to go. "There ought to be," answered Mr. Barton. "If the Inside history ol all this could be told? which, of oaurse, can't? there would be still more sym pathy than there is." REAL ESTATE MATTERS. The pelting rain storm prevalent daring the en tire day yesterday tended te keep away many people wlio otherwise would have attended the public sales at the Real Estate Exchange. In con sequence a very slim audlenco "put In an appear ance, and It was apparent throuKhout the entire proceedings of the auctions that tliere was a spirit lacking among bidders, ior eligibly located property seemed to go begging. A. J. Bleecker, Son A Co. disposed of the fenr story brick house 261 Fourth avenue, lot 23x00, for $34,009, and Messrs. Mailer, Wliklns A Co. oiTered a three story brick factory, 542, 544 and 543 West Thirty-thlrd'street, lot < 4x98.9, which was bid in at $20,000 by James Harrison. These were the moat Important public sales oi the day, Irom which the temper of the purchaser can well be gauged. The last named property is estimated to be worth at least $35,ooo, and it was knocked down at the nominal figure of $20,000. The only redeeming leatnre ol yesterday was the completion of a contract on a plot of lUverslde property, begun a lew days ago, which was the first real transaction in realty in this vicinity siuce the famous 'Tost" sale. The plot alluded to was disposed of hy Mr, John McClave. and cousl?ts of the lot located on the northeast corner of River side avenue anil Eighty -tirst street, having a "con cave" front of 100 leet, on the avenue, 103 ieet on Eighty-tlrst street, i mining east, 123 feet on rear of lot, running easterly, and 102 feet 2 Inches running north. The price paid for ihls plot ?was $75,noo. This is a fair indication of the value S laced upon property lacing the new Park, which ids fair to rival our Central l'ark. William Grant, one of the proprietors of the plank Ridge colliery, and Walter Glbbs, Inside boss, were killed this morning by the falling of tho roof ol a new slope while examining it to see if it was safe lor miners to work under. Thoy had sounded the roof and decided tnat it was not safe, sud denly the roof emnn 4iov.ii. John LaHiu and Michael Monaghan, laborers, were injured by the faiL THE NEW CHARTER. Excitement Aronitd the Department*? Alnrm and Anxiety of the Attochea o t Borne? A Chat with the Hayor? He Will Btave Off the Nominations ?? Long aa Possible? Will Ignore the Custom Horn* Clique and Would aa Soon Trait Bill Tweed aa George Bllaa. The new charier wan yesterday a prolific source lor discussion among the "small fry" politicians about the City Hall and the departments, and its sudden passage has spread alarm into the bread and butter brigade of clerks and messengers in those departments whose heads are not retained. As a matter of course the oftlolals ol the Comptrol ler's Otllce, Public Works, Ac., are rejoiced at the prospect of a long tenure of office, and many Indulged in extrava gances that they hare denied themselves ever since the Legislature met learlug an invita tion to step out In search of a situation elsewhere. Many a wife and child yesterday received presents from the head of the house that they have long desired, while a few, no doubt, increased the qual ity of their cigars and drinks at lunch time. The politicians aro actively "guessing" as to the coming men, and already reports fly around In which many are named. Am.ng the names men tioned are Jackson bchultz and Tom Acton for the Tollce Commission, and George Opdyke lor i'ublic Works ; but It Is sale to say that no one knows who the Commissioners to be appointed are. Even the Mayor has not decided yet upon the men. A Ukrald reporter yesterday had a lengthy Inter view with Air. Havemeyer, who stated that he wished time to consider who are the best men Irrespective of party, that the Governor will not likely sign the charter until next week, and that as be has twenty days in which to make tno nominations he will stave off the work as lout: as possible for the purpose or having some time fer consideration. Wuen asked whether he would likely retain many of the present Com missioners he answered that bo had not made up his mind on that point; that as he was elected as a non-partisan Ma) or he would street the best men he could llnd among relorm republicans and relorm democrats, but he would take no Tammany Hall man or llre-cutug republican of the wire-pulling order. Bpeaklng ol Bliss and Murphy and tlieir Custom liouse cohorts he declared lie would as soon trust Bill Tweed as thoy ; Indeed, he would Booner trust Tweed than JLSliss at any time. 11c relerrcd to his appointment of the Education Com missioners, and stated that while lie selected them without knowing their political feel ings or nationalities, he iound that seven teen of the twenty-one were republi cans. The Germans bud complaiued that they were not represented, and he answered them that he thought when he made the appointments they were all Germans. He did not know whether the Common Council would confirm all his nomina tions; but he would select the best men, and il any were rejected would select the next best and nom inate them. No pressure, he repeats, has yet been made upon liiin by politicians ot any party, and he does not propose to permit it In the selection of the parties, especially If it comes from the Custom House gang, whose objcct to him seems to be plunder. From the conversation the reporter was led to believe It is the Mayor's intention, as lar as possible, to divide the appointments on each com mission between reform republicans and relorm democrats, with a seasoning of square democrats; but "in no case,'' said he, "will 1 touch a Tammany I Hall man or any oae who supports them." Dr. A. W. She ;iard, city physician, testified to having made a post-m?rt?n examination 01 the body of the deceased; he found that she hud come to her death by Injuries received arid by the condition ot her Constitution, which was impaired by the too treciuent me of alcoholic stimulants. Edward Fltzslmnns, brother of Mrs. Moran. testified that the prisoner had exhibited great anxiety to obtain a certificate ol burial trom the physician w no hud been called in ;ust before the woman died. Whilo this witnass was on the stand the prisoner nodded to littn, whereupon Hi/.simens appealed to the Coroner, remarking that he "Did not want thai murderous fellow nodding at him." Mrs. White testified that on the evening in question she saw the prisoner have hold of ais wite bv the shoulder uad assisting her down tlio stairs with his toes. This lat ter remark elicited a predisposition on tlio pnrt of the spectators at tlio examination to evince audible levity. Tne Coroner Immediately checked this unseemly exhibi tion.
