The private view or tne annual exhibition of
)aintlngs and sculpture held Ust nlirhr, in the
icadeiuy of DesUrn, brought together a large aud
Aishionable assemolft/e. Nearly every oue inter
ested in arc was present, aud the exhibition
rooms presented an animated aud brilliant scene.
fatly years have passed since the establishment or
tbe Academy of Design, and its value in aiding
the cause of art in this country can be lairly
tanged by the result us suown by the works on
ibe walls. On this subject, as on almost every
ItRsdon of human Interest, there is a marked
Iivergence of opinion. Some do not fail to ap
plaud, and others as heartily to condemn, the In- i
Anence which this institution has exercised on the
aevelopment of
ART KNOWLEDGE
among Americans, it is, however, something for
Ihe friends of the institution to be able to point at j
Results which no opponent can question or be
little. On the Academy walls this year there are 1
between 600 and 600 paintings, of various degrees
of merit, hot one among them would perhaps
deserve to be qualified as a great work, and there
are some which could well be spared irom the
collection. But though there is an absence of
"works oi the highest order there is no lack of
food pamtintr. In other years there have been
une or two canvases that stood out boldly be
yond the general mass, bat tins year there are
Home dozens of pictures that no art connoisseur
woold be likely to pass by without notice.
Tbe large majority of the works making up the
present exhibition are unpreteutlous, and there
U a marked absence of ambitious efforts. There
la everywhere evidence of a desire to fall in

clever technique is more sought after than any
striking theme. Owing to the discontent or a
few artists with the ruio forbidding the previous
exhibition of works intended to be shown in the
Academy several of our most prominent artists
are not represented and others are represented
by works which are confessedly not the oast pro
duct of their
YEAR'S LABOR.
It may be regretted that the rule had the effect
?l excluding sucn men as Church and Glfford from
?o important an exhibition, but there can be no
doubt that the objection ursed by the academi
cians against the previous exhibition tu cluos and
other semt-pubiic places of works intended tor the
annual exhioition are sufficiently cogent to merit
the serious consideration oi the artists themselves.
?Whatever tends to lower the Academy in public
?stitration is it serious injury to American art,
and though the new rule may bear somewhat
liardly at iirst on some artists who And it to their
Interest to exhibit m ibe CiDbe. tuere can
be no uoubt that whatever lends tu give creator

markable beauty. It is painted with so much
vigor that It seems absolutely alive. The moiitil

nestness and simplicity. Close to it is a woman's
head by Katou, admirable lu color, and painted
with great dasu. There are a large uumber of
works reserving attention, which we win return
to another time. The exhibition opeus to the
public to-day, and will, uo uoubt, receive tue
attention it merits.

The Nineteenth ward Is well known for the
perpetration of practical jokes, and last night it
more than sustained its reputation In tnis
specialty oi grim humor. Dr. John H. McCaffrey is
a young bachelor physician who resides at
No. 642 Lexington avenue and is said to
be worth over $300,000. The youug men who
have habitations lu the vicinity of Brevoort Hall
and about Third avenue and Firty-lourth street
declare that Dr. McCaffrey does not "pan out"
sufficiently to satisfy the hard workers in the
district, and It was accordingly determined
lu secret council to "give" Dr. McCaffrey
a bouquet ou the occasion ol his being uppointed
to the otllce of Medical Inspector (?) ol tee Nine
teenth precinct. There is not, of course, any such
position as that of Medical Inspector of
the Nineteenth precinct, yet Dr. McCaffrey
was yesterday aiternooa the recipient ol a letter
purporting to come irom Mayor WlcKtum, in
wuich me latter gentleman appointed htm to
be medical inspector of the aforesaid precinct, at
a salary of $15,000 a year. Dr. McCaf
frey received the notification, and was highly
elated at his appointment and showed the
offlaal brief to ail his trieuus. lie, however,
stated that the ompliment was unexpected, but
that lie would ruitu his duties laittnuliy and would
not accept of more thau ja.ooo a year lor his ser
vices. The Doctor, who has uot as yet seen the
Joke, ordered au expensive banquet to be pre
pared lor about sixty gentlemen at Brevoort
llali, with as uiunv baskets of wiue as might be
called lor by the guests. Music was also ordered
to the exceut ol six pieces, the band going by the
name of Dlnklesjuei's .sheet irun Baud.
THE PROCESSION.
At nine o'clock last evening the procession was
formed outside of Brevoort llall, silently,
to Hie number of 100 persons, nil of
the male sex. Mr. James MoGovern, who
bad been cuosen as cmcf Fiend, together
with Mr. .Matthew Beard and Counsellor
John Hayes, headed the procession. J ne
band mistook their orders and wanted to fall be
hind aiter the manner ol a tuueral. but were not j
allowed to do so by the leader, of toe banqueting 1
party, lticnard W. Buckley aud Frank Hays
acted as flankers aud kept the files well closed up ;
as the column moved through Muy-ionrth street. !

cai instruments, and the Ueruiati baud played in
a jerky way, "Silver Threads Among the I
Gold." Th" procession was a most solemn
looking affair, and as it parsed the aristocratic
dwellings on Lexington avenue heads were
popped out of windows Inquiringly, and people

to happen.
