Stocks a Trifle Stronger and Slightly Feverish. GOLD 114 1-4 A 114 1-2 A 114 3-8. ?Money on Call Easy at 3 1-2 and 4 Per Cent? Government and Railway Se curities Steady. Walu Stm*t, ) Mokdat, Dec. 6?6 P. M. J , , Few stock brokers have been fortunate enough these p%st two years to find their nightly couch a bed of rosea. Most of them havo hud to put up with a flock Unattress or something worse, and the annoyance of a crumpled leaf bos been a Ureuin of inconceivable 'luxury. Up to mid-day a stxangor would have Imagined, from the Intensity of dulness that prevailed, that members bad bi^ Just risen from some couch of popples, had Tubbed In tho waters of I<ethe and breakfasted upon a Lountiful repast of lotos leaves. The whole markot, In a word, was narcotic and somniferous. But shortly after, the change which the poet sings of came over the spirit of this dreumy state of things and matters fcegan to wake up. The first stock to throw open the shutters to tho light of coming activity was our old favorite Luke Shoro. The chief brave attached to the lodge of the "big Injun," Jay Gould, In all the pride of paint and feathers showed upon the ?warpath personally, and all the little "Injuns" ex claimed in their native tongue, "Lo! now look oat for ?calps." Taking these trophies at tho price of 59, it -was not long beforo the other big Injuns scented the fray from alar, and they soon joined in the scrim mage. Mr. M rryman shed his motley and donned the garb of tho noble savaee, and the young operator, divested of his hirsute attire anil "accoutred as be was," plunged into the miUe, thirsting for pride of place and profits. Kven the Teutonic element forgot Its proverb ial stolidity and took a nand lu the struggle, and so can it be wondered at that there was a lively advance in the fancy, and the price rose from 69 to aojf f reaching which figure tho gong sounded a cetsaUon of business (or the day. It was a dear case of Greek Joining Greek, or rather a pull together of all the Indian chlelfc, and the results wure undoubtedly satisfactory. The Intent of the movement, however, is not so clear, and there Is much comment as to the animus which actuated IV Whether It be a concerted movement of the great Moguls of the street, based upon an apparent low price of tho stock, sn expected favorable report and a promised dividend, or whether It be simply a twirl upward for the purpose of strengthening the general market, and thns organ izing an eligible basis for sales, aro qcerles to which a day or two's business will probably afTord an answer. One thing is certain, that the rise In Lake Shore visibly stimulated the rest of tne market, and stocks generally closed with a feeling of buoyaiicy and strength that has been conspicuous for Its absence for many a day past. During the dull hours of the morning the discussion if Mr. Gould's course In refusing to honor a call upon him to deliver a cortain amount or Cnion Pacific stock Iras a matter or much comment in stock circles. M ?early as we can gather, the story seems to be as rol lows:?When Union 1'aciflc was selling at 66. Mr. Gould banded to an eminent ex Judge, who was at tho same time his own legal adviser, u privilege to cull during a certain period and at the figure ore", some 2.500 shares ?r the above stock. There w:is no money payment made by tho "legal adviser'' for this call, but he was to render an equivalent in tho shapo of Informa tion as lo the decision to be rendered by the Supreme Court at Washington. For some reason th? tall passed Irom the hands of the first bolder Into those ?f a third party, and on Saturday the demand was made upon Mr. Gould for the Btock and delivery refused. The amount of money In dispute, at Saturday's price, probably amounts to som-; $25,000. Mr. Gould alleges, in explanation, that no information was given as promised and that the matter betnu a private one be tween himself and his lawyer, the documentary call Improperly passed out of the possession of its original owner. The quarrel Is a pretty one as It stands, but it may be productive of one good result, vi*. the defluing of the exact status of contracts known as "puts aud calls. " Union Pacific was at first weak at 77% a 70X, and then steady at 77 a 77% until noar j the close, when 78% was bid, with no sales. Northwestern was steady at 39 a 38% a 39%, while the preferred, after remaining quiet at 64% a 51%, sud denly at the close spurted to 55 %. St Paul sold at 35 a 36 a 35% *36%. *nd the preferred at 66 aM'j. Michi gan Central fluctuated between 60\ and 61)*, showing considerable firmness on a small amount of trading. Pacific Mail, after opening at 40% and selling at 40, was manipulated at about 40%, until near the close it be came valuable at 41 a 41 %. We understand that a meeting of its board of directors was called for to-day At Mr. Gould's house The remainder of the list pre sented no material changes. THE SALIS TO-DAT. ApdJt to UKIGUS A OAHLETON, 98 Broadway, immm R.UXJIOAD EXTORTION. HOW NEW YORK SUITERS AND BOSTON PROS PERS THROUGH A RAILROAD COMBINATION. Considerable dissaiigfacticiD bas been arouiod in mercantile circle? in this city by the course adopted by the freight lines running from New York to the Woat. For some years past that course has been re garded as antagonistic to the general commercial Inte rests of the city and Injurious In an especial manner to many of the loading branches of trade which aro centred here, to the great advantage of competing cltioa. Since tho 15th of November the ovll has been largely Increased, and has boon folt to such an extent by many of the leading New Yor<c houses t^utt It has been deter mined to take prompt and doclsivo action to procure a a remedy. Since the completion of tho Iloonac Tunnel It has been lound that goods can be sent to the West from New York through Boston mnch cheapcf than directly by the lines running out of Now York ow:ug to a combination entered into by the latter! In Halluxoru also It has been found cheaper to send fjoods by propeller to Boston and thence West tbtya to send them directly West l>om Baltimore. This apparent anonutly is caused by the excessive com bination rates charged by the lines running (torn New York, which have b?en arrauged on a basis, to many Important points of nearly 100 per cent in favor of Bosun* and always largely la favor of Baltimore and Philadelphia. To give an idea of the enormous differ ence between the Boston and New York rales the fol lowing table of tho rates paid by a leading New York hous? is appended:? 0? tin platci, pig and bar tin and lead, special per 100 lb& ' ' * -P*om Aew York, lloiu*. The r>;a?on given for tbo cheapness of the Boston rates is the fact that the Boston Grand Trunk lino stubbornly refuse* to combine, and thus keeps the competition ?ery close. Many Boston hou>es whteh were lately in a weak condition have been already built up by tins means, at the expense of New York, and if the present combination continues much longer the effort on the business of this city will be very serious. , Tho large houses which have large business with the West will not suffer alone, but the whole community will lose by the transfer of a largo and profitable trade to otter points. A number of iead'ne Now York merchants, im pressed with tbo sorions nature of the interests at ctaku and the necessity lor prompt and vigorous action, have determined to call a meeting of business men at the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday n' Xt, gih Inst., at two P. M., to consider the matter anil take early action to provide relief. TILE CUSTOM HOUSE. Kx Governor Noble, of Wisconsin, formerly weigher In tb? Custom House, took possession formally of the So zure Room In tho Custom House yesterdny, the keys having been handed to him by Colonel Treichel, his predecessor in office.
