Inrtri*! v lUlth wr.u.vu uyvu m iiuwji i v buchiu? /ill erty and lite. It is >iuitu time that this matter should kivi the most carctul and skilful eiautiuatiou ana the proper remedy applied, whatever thai may be. I ho ordinary |>erila ol tho sea are certutnly ureal enough without superadding this awful liability?nay, almost probability, it would seem?to be consumed by tire. If certain of thesu English and American soft coals can only be used or carried on shipboard lit iho risk of uvokiug at any moment this tiro demon the luct should be known and alt such coals be utterly excluded. This can readily bo ascertained by careful inquiry. Tho analysis ot these coals shows, at u glance, the ktrptt percentage or volatile mailer which gives to lliein , their daugerous characteristics The underwriters would seem to be the proper persons to conduct this inquiry, as they have the remedy in their own hands, by refusing to msure any vessel carrying, or auy cargo consisting, wholly or in p.irl, of these gtssy, sellkindling coals. That most of the true bituminous coals (English and American) are subject to spontaucous combustion when in hulk, uud under favorable circumstances, lias lung been known, aud even when lying in large neaps, exposed to tbc atmosphere, there is a cerium waste aud dulcriuraliou that lakes place, attributed to a slow combustion. Tho waste ol luel, however, exposed to uir, depends on its igniting temperature. Experiments by lireeuamaiiu, at J-aruowiu, in (lermauy. have proved concluaiveiy that au exposure of bilumiuous coal in heaps to the action of the weather fur u period varying Ironi two weeks to a year results 111 a large percentage ol loss. This loss ts iu the nature ol a slow or incomplete coinbusliou; it is greater and more rapid in large Leaps than iu small, and is also luvored by tho greater or less slate of subdivision ol the coal, large lrugnients losing propurtiouubly less than smaller ones. The loss varies iroiu live to twenty-live per cent. Vurreutrupp also gives the following test:?"A quantity of pulverized coal (bituminous) was placed iu a tight vessel, through which u current ol air could be drawn. The vessel and air were brojghl to u temperature of JSO dog. Fahrenheit, aud the air, utter passing through ttio appaiatus, was caused to bubble through certain chemical preparations wuich hud tho property ol retainiug and rendering visible carbonic acid. I'udcr these circumstances the carbon of the cniil u-ui ultiinutolv re moved by Ilia chemical solution of the air as carbonic acid, shuwiug conclusively that a true combustion had taken place. This combustion is no complete that in three mouths nothing but ashes remain." The higher the temperature the more rapid, ol course, is the combustion. The heal urouml the coal bunkers ol steamships must necessarily bo very great, from their close proximity to the boilers atul lurnaces; aud in sailing ships, containing large quantities of these coals in bulk, tukuu on board mostly wet, the gcnc-raliou of beat to the point of ignition seems to bo only u question of time. What this time will be will vary accordinir to circumstances. It will be noticed in the loregoiug list ol disasters thut the steamship l.uiuadcu, alter coaling ut Norfolk, sailed, and, alter being out one day, put back, with oue of her bunkers on tire. The quantity iu bulk seems to make no difference, us it will be seen the "lioniie lnicuiiuu" bad but threo or lour tons on board. The sulphur aud volatile matter In bituminous uud hydrogenous coals are the active agents in spontaneous combustion, and the Ouer the particles the better is the coudiliou tor producing that result. There is absolutely no security ou shipboard from this great peril where these llery, gaseous coals are carried or used, as it is certain they will "go oil," exactly how soon being the ouly unknown luclor. The elements for the work of spontaneous destruction all exist; when the blaze will begin depends only ou the peculiar circumstances of cuch case, (ircnl vigilance often detects the incipient coullagrution, "the lire Is quietly put out," aud the passengers arc saved Iroin the shock of the imminent dauger they have passed through. Cotton, gunpowder and other hazardous articles are sale in comiutrlsou with the coals referred to, lor these generally will uot burn or explode unless tire is put to them, whilst the former are, iu their uuturo, spontaneously destructive. Among the recent disasters Iroin the cause referred to, it will lie noticed, was the steamship Japan, valued at over $1,000,000, and some 500 or 000 of her pussougurs were burnt up, or drowned as a preferable late, alter jumping from the burning ship into the sea. This stale ol things may he expected to go on until an enlightened public opinion causes the substitution, on passenger ships at leant, or coals winch constitute' a sale and clcun ocean steam luel; whilst the heavy losses on transport ships will, it is hoped, cause the underwriters to put up rates to cover losses or induce them to decline writing such risks altogether. maCKLURBOVt.
