THE ENGLISH DERBY.
WHAT THN LONDON JOCRNAI.S THINK OF THE
UKEAT HACK AT SPBOM?HOW IT WAS BUN
AND WON..
Id addition to the lull cablo details of this great race
on Kpsom Downs published Id the Hkkalo ot the 1st
lust. the following may provo interesting, as they
arc the first reports by mail received of Ihe uveut:?
"Hotspur" in the Londou Daily Ttlcgrapk, Judo 1,
?ays:?
The description of tbo Derby of 1876 will fall to
other* moie competent to deal with it. but at least a
layman may commout upon tbo strango pertinacity
Willi which those who taw the race refused utilil tho
\ory last moment to believe the evidence ot their own
eyes. Color blindness is strange enough, but wlieu
the lavuruo l'etrurch was obviously out ot the
hunt it was not a little strange that tho colors
ot the winner and loser should have been alike
lorgotieu, aud that tbe victorious Mineral coll. alias
Kisber, should have been greeted as l'otrarch absolutely
until the winuing post was reached. In a spectacular
seune it seemed it poor and uuiuieroyug race. Ine
held was small and the ruce was not excuiue. When ,
the ceremonies at the paddock were aompMlad and ihe
llle ol horses paraded lor ihet canter nil eyes were dl- 1
reeled toward l'eirarch. When ho walked every ouo ?
autulrcd him, but wbeu he cantered he lost ground in j
the estimation ol everybody. The race presented no
leaturos ol interest lor those who bad seen more ani
mated coutesis. ltut tbo strange part of it was that
when the French gray and scarlet colors were seeu well
In iront the popular impression seemed to be that l'e
irarch had won after all. For live seconds at least
there was indecision, aud dltectly the numbers went
up ibis same marked doubt was universally expressed
Willi the rouaric, "I told you it was not 1'etrurch:
M moral coll has won." Laymen could havo decided
the point oirhuuu, but it is dangerous to Interlere wbeu
prejudice has determined lor the favorite aud dolcriuincs <
uot to lake "Uo" lor an unswer. So passed awuy with
out variety and with little animation the ninety-seventh
Derby. As a day it was a success; lis a picnic u was a
failure; us an opportunity for enjoyment it was hedged
rouud wuh dllUculty.
"Vigilant," In tbe London Sportsman, samo dato,

to go to the Imperial stud at Kisber; but her transier
took place prior to iho suceess o: Wenlock in the Si.

turn to England, but ihe foreigners finding she had
produced Sch wiudler to Adventurer, and was an ap
proved stud matron, declined to pifri with the mare,
and Kisber?the Derby haro?was the result ol her at
liuncu with Buccaneer. Her carver a.-* a racer was
lather an eventful one, but, like most of the Ashby do

ccfcslve years came The Miner, Skirier, Mineral and
Thursday, the latter being the darn ot Holy Friar. Mau
diagora, llio lull sister to Mineral, has thrown such u*e
tul horses us Mandrake, Agility atul Apology, so that
on ttio side of his dam It will be admitted thai there
could not well have tieeu a bolter bred horse in the
Derby than Kisber. His sire, who was a really smurt
animal, was Huccaneer, by Wild Dayrell?a Derby win

Lord Portsmouth might have dono great things with
Huccaneer, had the horse not buou "nobbled" lor ttio

lu the uutumu or 1MJ5 was seut abroad, taking
his placo in tbo iroix-nul siud of Austria. He left
some useful youngsters behind hiui, an I the doings of
Brigauillie. Formosa und Paul Jones caused deep
lamentations at the loss the country had Siihlained in
his expatriation. Mr. Uieuklron was induced to go
over to Austria and was preparer! to give a large sum
of money tor Uucranoer; l>ui no price was tempting
enough, aud llio founder ot Middle Park came bock us
he went. I have been induced to mention the fore
going tacts in connection with tho sire aud dam of
Kisber to show ibui a fair portion of the honors ot to
day are due to England; but, bad tho colt becu entirely
ot foreign extraction, the victory would not have been
In the least grudged, for iho beat ot all reasons, that It
