tbere $1,300,000; 1 waa president of the company und
got it in One shape. I sold a good many "puis" on It,
and tbo losa was very large. I guess 1 lost over $800,000 or
$400,000 on Lake Shore, and 1 lost largely on Cauiou.
Tbere are a great many little things 1 cannot remem

Mr. Stern?I know that.
"Fifteen or sixteen month* ago I bad $1,000,000
more money Jban 1 owed, after 1 secured for
my grandcbildreu tbe money left tbem by their

sold to pay debts with. Tbe bulk of it was paid out
two or throe years ago to pay debta. Billy (meaning

bankruptcy. 1 said 1 never would go into bankruptcy,
and never expected to until tweuty days before 1 did.
These ioilows were pursuing me.

bow much 1 was worth, althougn 1 did my business
different from anybody else. 1 don't know whether
Bill has borrowed on the Canada stock?he couldn't

there was no Income."
? Has Bill got ibisCanaU 1 Southern vet 7"
"Yes. 4 do not know whether ne ha* any other or

"Were the $000, Out) or $ Hut), 000 lost on Canton and

; Biddable ol it. They bad more securities than any
body else. 1 think they had no right to soil as lung as
they hud a margin. You know these brokors. The
custom is It they havo a margin they shouldn't have
sold. They made me logo in gold $70,000 or $80,000."
"Did they never explain that to you ?"
"1 think 1 havo never seen Kobinson hut once since.
They said tbe account waa all right. They allerward
said there was a statement, but I never havo seen It."
"Do you questiou ibe transactions so far as aome of
tbe broker* are concerned f"
' I do not kuew. i cannot tell whether they all bad

"In the later losse; did Cbaso k Atkins act lor you?"
"They with with Robinson."
"Did Wbitoley 4c NeiBou ?"
"I think tnoy are honest men. I was very largely

1 kuew 11 would go down."
"Did you order them to?"
"No, no, uoverl"
"Did they buy it in for your account*'
"I was short ol the stock."
"Did Whiicicy k Neilson buy Wabash for you and
charge you with it, without auy order trom you ?"
"1 don't thin* I gave any orders. 1 never gave any
orders in writing. Boyd, Viuuent k Co. also acted lor

ho was uu honest man It there was one. He sold out Hie
Quicksilver stock wbon It was goiug down and down,
but 1 dou't know that I ever blamed him much lor it.
Classon k Hays did uot aot lor ma 1 know Mr. Bab

Speculating in Wabash alone broke Keoyon, Cox & Co.
None of the oilier niemberH of that tlrin have ever paid

Munucl bad a small interest In ibe tlrm. 1 always

- Jo a
Did you do auytbtng with Silas Hibbnrd?"
"Mo; yes. 1 lost money by bun a good while ago. I
bad some transactions with Walter Townsoud, a great
scamp, but it never amounted to raucb. 1 bad also
some accounts with H. K. Kuos, Musgravu Co., Web
ster k Do Molt, R L. Catling & Co., W. C. Doruin, but
they bave all been settled up. If Whitely & Neilsou
bad let Wabasb aione, Instead ol buying it hi, tbere
would buve been an linmense profit on it. 1 brve no
doubt tbey are honest inou. Wabaab was the biggest
irau paction."
"Did you receive notices from your brokers of salos
ami purcha>es made by them ?"
"I think tbey seut in memoranda. but I always tore
tbeui up 1 trusted to the honor of the men. Robin

"la there no way tu wnicb you could account for the
sales and purchases?"
"I suppose the brokers' books ought to show."
"Did you go into any pools?''
"lu that great loss in Wabash, and Canada Southern.
That ia three years ago. The last pool waa in North

"Never went In with others and made a pool?"
"1 udn't remember that 1 did. 1 can't remember.
No, I never waa in any pool but that. There was a
joint account between Kooinson and me, aa we made
considerable inouoy, but It waa all wiped out. That was
in 1874."
?? An J the joint aocount, too ?"
"Yea. he made it out so. I don't think be ever ren

1 had loat u gi'Od deal. Robinson put up notbiug in
the joint account. 1 suppose Chose, bis partner, had

"Are you able to say whether Mr. Robtnaon con

"1 can't telL"
"Did you ever give discretionary orders to your
brokers?"
"No, sir, I don't think I could And any of my ac

anybody else. I depended upon men's honesty.
"How did you become liable to your grandchildren?"
"1 was ihoir executor ami settled with them In IMS.

"Who made up that account?'
"1 made the settlement. 1 uidn't think at the time I
owed so tuueu, hut at that time 1 owned a great deal of
property, and 1 was determined to nave it right. It
rau along In this careless way, and 1 finally made a
settlement. This man Kublusuu, ol Crainni B Robin

"Wua It in 1874 that you deposited securities with
the Farmers Loau and Trust Comp .ny ?"
"1 cannot sa?. It was a good while ago. Charles

THE YORKVILLE BANK MUDDLE.
About two months ago a man named N. F, Tildes
opened an account with the Yorkville Savings Bank.
He first made deposits In cash and small dralts, follow
ing up these by depositing larger drafts on out of town
banks Several of these dralts wore Irom the Newburg
Savings Bank, and they amounted In the aggregate to
about $7,00di It has been latoly diecArered that these
latter drafts bad been raised irom small amounts and
that Mr. N. F. Tllden who had drawn against them
has suddenly disappeared. The Produoe Bank, of No. 6
College place, is the agent of the Yorkville Savings
Bank, and Tilden's urafts were sent to the Produce
Bank lor collection and the Produce Bank lorwarded
them to tbo Continental Bank lor clearance Tho
bank agent in this city or the Newburg Savings Bank
is the Central National Bank, No. 320 Broadway, and
that insulation paid the drafts when presented by the
Continental. The forgeries were not discovered till ?
settlement of accounts was m.tde between the Cen
tral National Bank and tbo Newburg Savings Bank.
The Central then applied for ibe refunding of lUS
money to the Continents.' The Continental looked td
me 1'roduco Bank to settle It, and the Produce Bank
at ouco applied to tbe Yorkvilie Savings Bank. Thers
was a meeting of the officers ol tbe Yorkvilie Savings
Bank yesterday, and It was generally understood ths
affair would be settled between the banks without litl
gallon. Mr. Samuel Conover stated to the re
porter yesterday arternoou that the officers ol th? ,
Yorkvilie Savinga Bank were all wealthy men and that
it would not aflect the standing oi the bauk. Bank ex
aminer Keid reported lUut it bad a surplus of $1,300
over its liabilities. Mr. Conover complained that tlio
delay of thirty days that bad been made In lorwarding
tbe drafts to tbo Newburg bunk by tbo Ceutru
National bad given Tilden a better opportunity ol
securing a large amouut of money by bis operations,
but be tolt confident tbatiho matter would be amicably
settled. Mr. Wbeeloek, President of tbe Central
National Bank, said that their bank bad notliibg to ds
with tbo matter but look to tbe Produce Bank for thg
money, but ho understood also that ths matter wad
virtually settled.

AM ATTEMPT TO SAVE A MAN BT USING ANOTHXB

[From ths Georgetown (Col.) Miner, June 17,]
Last week we mentioned briefly tbe cutting of Frank

was generally supposed that tbe wounded man would
recover.
The event, however, has proved that the affray was
destined to terminate in a tragedy that was aot at Oral

The wounded man la doad and in hla grave, and ths
murderer is safely locked up in JalL
List Sunday night Gray, who was sleeping la sa up

coughing and a fearful hemorrhage ensued. He was
alone at the time, and started to the door to giro tba

spurted in torrents from the wound, and before Doctor

estimated, had boon pumped by tbe heart

he was gradually sinking, and for tue most part lay is
a seml-unciiuscious state. The attending physician da

Blood was drawn from Kerwla'a arm aad kept at

regulated by a thermometer. The n brine or clot was
then carefully removed by Dr. Lemen, an incision
made la a vein ol the right arm and tbe blood
forced into the inolsed veto through a small syringe.
About lour ounces of tbe blood drawn from Ksrwm'l
