OKNBIIAL BBAXTON T. BKAOO.
The sudden death of Gsnoral Braxton T. Bragg, at
Galveston, Texas, yesterday, is announced. Ho
dropped doad in tho street in Iront of tho Post Ofllne.
Tho Geucral had been enjoying usual health up to the
moment of utteck. Tho cuuso of his death was syncope,
induced by organio diseaso ol tho boart. Ho was
sixty-ono years ot ago. The body now lies in slate at
Artillery Hall, Galveston, and will be removed to Mobilo,
whero hts brother, Judgo llragg, long resided, lor
Interment.
General Braxton Bragg was born In Warren county,
North Carolina, In 1815, and alter recoiving a fair
primary education, entered West Point In 1833. Ho
was graduated in 1837, and was appointed Second
Lieutenant ot tho Third Artillery, and scrvod, mainly.
In Florida until 1843, during tho war with thoSeminoles
from 1843 to 1845 he was stationed at Fort Moultrie,
Charleston. Wttn tbe rank ot tlrst lieutenant ho
entered tho Moxican war. There his numo soon became
known throughout tho ltcpublic for his heroic
deieuce ol Fort Brown?a littio earthwork thrown
up by Gcnoral Taylor on the hank of
tlwi Bin Grande, nimnsitu tno Citv of Mutamoros?and
by Ins subsequent conduct at Buona Vista, when bis
battery, supported only by the First Mississippi rillus,
charged and routed the Mexican army, after the volunteer

afterward lie was relieved from bis command and
called to Richmond, where bo acted us adviser to
President Davis, who uphold blm despite ttio attacks
of the entire southern press. His lust campaign
against Sherman, in 18(14, was unsuccessful. At llio
cluso of the war General Bragg retired to prlvato lite.
The Greenwood plantation was declared confiscated
I and was sold by the government. 11a disappeared
from the public not Ico entirely and lived In absolute
qutol In Mobile and Galveston until his death.
