Th? scarcity nf Croton water still continoas, par'
tlcotarly id the uptown districts. The heavy fall or
rain daring the past week created tbc general Impree
lioo that the reservolre must be full. Such u not the
case, however, and the scarcity will continue until a
lories of heavy rain* have pasted over the lakes and
the Croton watershed. During the great drought of
the past summer the drain upon the reservoirs was
very heavy and they have not been tilled since. That
the water in many uptown houses dees not rise
above tho second floor and In soma casaa not
above the first Is due to the fact that the department
has lowered the water In tbo distributing reservoir
sixteen feet in order to decrease tho pressuro and,
consequently, the supply.
Commissioner Campbell says:?"At the time the
Croton Aqueduct was projected It was supposed that
forty gallons a day for each inhabitant would be a
liberal allowance, and probably In earlier years, after
Its completion, that proportion was not exceeded. The
ratio per capita has gone on Increasing, until now It is
nlnety-flvo gallons dally, or more than double the
original quautliy. This seoms to bavo been the history
ot many other cities of this country, and may be ac
counted lor by the modern improvements In dwelllug
houses, the rap d increase In shipping and tnanufac
luies, the establishment of fountains, the demand for

THE CARMEN'S TROUBLE.
A largo and demonstrative mooting of the carmen
and drivers was hela Saturday evening at tbo Stevens
House, lu the Firn ward. It was resolved lo appoint a
committee of ten to watt on the Board of Aldermen lor
the purpose of having their licenses reduced, which
were raised some time ago. Messrs. Ellis C. French

A LUCKY ORPHAN.
Many years ago Stephen Bireh, a miller, came to
this country from Caoisrbury. England. Ho married
Margaret Us. wno Is believed to bavo been a native or
Ohio. She died, leaving a boy named Stephen and a
girl. The latter was taken by her mother'a relatives,
and has never since been beard of by her brother who
was placed by hit father with a Iriend in New York.
The boy was visited Irom time to time by k:s rather,
but sa ho grew up the viaita became lots frequent.'
When nineteen years old young Stephen Joined the
Union army during tbo late war. and when he re
turned he lound tbat hit father had died. Some two
years ago be beard from England that he was believed
to be the heir to a considerable estate, and after consul
tation with the British Consul be went to Enxland

A HEROIC GIRL REWARDED.

?all yesterday sn elegant gold token made In the form
ol a Maltese cross, inserted on one aide, "August 2d.
1870," and on the other side, "To the Heroic Young
Lady." The token was Inclosed in an elegant case, but
there was nothing to Indicate from whom it came.
The date, however, Indicates that it was sent to Miss
Drew in recognition of her bravery while at Downer
Landing on the 20th of August last. On that occasion
Miss Drew was spending the day thero, and while out
rowing with a lady friend about half a mile irotn the
shore a sail boat with a party on board passed close by
tbem, sailing rapidly. At ibut moment a cnild on board
the sail boat (ell overboard. The party were unable
to bring the boat around quickly, not understanding
its tnamigeineut. Miss Drew immediately jumped out
ol ber bout, and. swimming to the child, rescued it,
alter it had sunk twice. She then swam back to her
boat, by wblcn lime the sail boat was near by, and tbe
parents took tbe child to the hotel. Mis* Drew re
turned to the ebore, ana, after drying her clothes, cams
buck to Boston in the steamer without learning tbe
uame ol tbe child or lie parents.
