Although the early telcgrums were of a much more
pacific nature and represented a more quiet and as
tured state of feeling on the European bourses, with
higher prices for consols, rentes and public fuuds,
our stock market was not disposed to yield uu lota of
the strength which baa animated It for the last two
day*. Speculators having ouco obtained a suufl' of
"villanous saltpetre" were iu to humor to be
lieve that tho wbolo mutter might end in a
mere lusilado of paper i?i!ets, and it was not uhtl]
later advices were received, with reports current upon
the London Stock Exchange that an armistice had been
agreed to, that the sparklo got out ol the market and
left It as Hat us the heeltaps iu a beer tlagon. On the
long side the early birds were tho worm catcbors, and
achieved their vermicular success in such stocks
as the granger, Lake Shore and coal properties, the
advance being Irom }% to 2 percent, which was retained
nutil the telegram considered unfavorable was received.
Although, like Cato's, the voice of the market was
?still lor war," the price list did not back up tho scntl
meut, but expressed Itaoir in a lowor scalo of prices^
which was spread through the whole rango of active
stocks and particularly alTectod those which had boon
Itrougesl in the morning. Tnus, noarly the wholo
advance was Irliiered away, and the situation, not very
luvltlng at the best, became less se on the tall of gold
to 110 and on tbo sharp decline In cereals In tho Chi
cago markets. Railroad bulls, however, have always a
best bower ready lor service In caso of diftlcultles In
the shape of a reconstructed freight tarttl, and this
thoy got overboard this afternoon and chocked the lee
way.
The gist of the matter appears to be that representa
tives of the chief Eastern and Western fast freight
lines met at Detroit to-day and lormed a consolidation
of the Commercial Express, the Erie and North Shore,
tho Erie and Milwaukee aud the Diamond lines, ruu
ntug over the Erie, Michigan Contra), Detroit and Mil
waukee, and Canada roads; but no actual advance in
ratos seems to bavo been decided upon, nor does it ap
pear that the railroads in their corporative capacity
bad anything to do with the matter whatever.
The news was enough to turn tlie market upon,
however, aud prices were quickly seut upon the up
ward tack. Not to any very great extent either, for
the improvement ranged from )4 to \ per cent only,
and tbo market closed steady and something In the
position of Mahomet's oolliu, us suspended betwoon tho
best and worst prices of tho day.

held as low as 4 per cent. The movement ol currency

UoYernmcnt bonds are lower than yosterday, chielly
on accouul of lower gold. Tho war flurry lu Europe
naturally cheeks subscriptions to the new 4%
per rent bonds there, aud tho consequent advauco

and report that the London Stock Exchange learns of
the acceptance or a six weeks' armistice by Turkey,
producing the recovery of ); * % per cent In consols
and United Slates bonds which has been recorded.
Erie common declined from 11 to'101, a 10V, while
the preferred rose % per cent Bar silvor wus quoted
at 53 11-160. per ounce. At Franklort our new Uvea
sold at 101 >*? A special lAiudon Uospatch to Kiernau's
Foreign News Agency says:?The government has or.
dored 50,000 English troops to be put In readiuess for
immediate despatch, it necessary, to Turkey. The
