To-day ?ai tho second ot the autumn meeting or tbe
Maryland Jockey Club, and the attendance was bolter
than on ibe lint day. A large number of the ladies of
Baltimore graced tbe occasion with their presence, and
a more brilliant assemblage baa rarely been witnessed
an any race course.
Tbe track was in a much better condition than it
was yesterday, but it was still heavy, especially on tho
backstruich, und about the juilges' aland it was hard.

character. Fully 4,000 persons, including many ladies,
gathered to witness the sport on the card, and never
have the admirers of trotting in this vicinity been
treated to doer exhibitions or keener struggles tbun
marked the occasion. Xo shortcomings presented
themselves. Everything was gone through with in
the business like und straightforward way that has
made Fleetwood a place worthy o( putronago tno past
season; and with a continuance of like methods of con
ducting the reunions that will in the future be held

tion given in their honor last night at the residence of
the Kev. T. Be Witt T aim age, Houth Oxford street,
Brooklyn. The drawing rooms were thrown open

Mr Tupper could scarcely tlnd words adequate to
express his pleasure ul Unding himself in the midst ol
so mauy kind friends and acquaintances It was a
great honor lor the speaker aud lor his colleague, Mr.
itryaut to be so cordially received by ttio Kev. Mr.
Tai'iiau'c, whom he did uot hesitate to dosiguato as the
Spurteon of America. (Applause.) It would bo falso
modesty in the two poets lo disavow their worthiness,
in some measure, ol tbe compliment tnal was being
paid tbem. 1 bey bad labored bard lor twonty-llvo
vcars, aud, the speaker hoped, not in vain, lo merit
the praiae that was now bcitowed upon iheoi, and no

that their applause was sincere. In the twenty-nve
vt-ars which had pussed since Mr. Tupper was In Amer
ica belore many marked changes had taken place on
all huuoa. The edifices, the hotels, the ferryboats, tho
railroads and, above all, tho Centennial Exposition,
were to him so many uew aud wondcriul things that
surprised him on every side. Ho was especially glad
to uote the improvement in religion, morals and man
ners which it was easy to see marked the march of
the American tniDd on the road to a higher civilization.
It is not now possible that any lauli-tinding novelist
can come lo this country aud turn the manners of tbe
people into ridicule lor tho world to laugh at.
Mr. Bryant beard with plounuro tbe saco observa
t.ousot bis brother poet, and was glad to know that the
wonderful improvement of Americans in the vital mat
tcraol religion, morals and manner, bad not escaped
the observation ol Mr. Tupper. When the latter was
in this country some twenty-five years ago be wa% like
many other Jauious Englishmen able lo do etery thing
but make a speech. Now. however, nu improvement

Mr! Peter Cooper followed Mr. Bryant in a neat ad

progress, hoped it would continue thus forever, and

the Cooper f nion was erected and endowed.
The poet Bryant waa prevailed upon by Mr. Talmage
and some others ol the many lair ladtea who grouped
themselves near the respected octogenarian lo read
his celebrated "Thanutopaie."
The company separated at a laic hour.
OBITUARY.
CUARLB8 K. BELONG.
The Hon. Charles E. Be Long, ex-Minlater to Japan
died or typhoid fever, at Virginia City, yesterday. He
was a uatlve of Dutchesa county. New York. When
about aixtecu or seventeen years old he emigrated to
California and settled in Yubu county. From a clerk
In a store ho became a miner and subsequently held
the office ol Deputy Sheriff, and during Intervals
studied law. Alter becoming of age he was elected to
the California legislature, and in that body dietln.

a professor of history at Freiburg, and was born De
cember 10, 1795, at tiratz, in Rtyrta. There he re
ceived his early education and afterward studied pub
